It’s the summer of 1778 and Rhode Island is in the middle of the Revolutionary War. Their towns have been raided by British troops, warships fill Narragansett Bay, and now the Battle of Rhode Island is about to unfold on Aquidneck Island. As General Nathanael Greene, a Rhode Island native, walks amongst his nervous soldiers he sees a look of terror burned into their eyes. Some of the soldiers just sit there quietly while their trembling hands hold their muskets against their chest. Others write a quick letter home to their wife and children, knowing very well that it just might be their last. Each and every one of these brave men are about to risk their lives to protect a set of liberties we sometimes fail to appreciate. And as General Greene looks at his men, some of whom will inevitably be killed by the British enemy heading their way, he can’t help but ask himself; how has it come to this? How on earth has Rhode Island ended up at war with the British empire? And what will the future hold for our state if this Revolution is actually successful? These are questions that Greene not only ponders as he prepares for battle but ones we are also going to answer in Season 2 of the Story of Rhode Island Podcast.

For this season we’ll take a look at the radical ideas that drives Rhode Island to help ignite the American Revolution. Then, after watching them defend their towns along Narragansett Bay, we’ll follow General Nathanael Greene as he saves the American army from being destroyed. Finally, with the Americans coming out victorious, you’ll witness the people around Narragansett Bay once again choose to stand by their beliefs while everyone else tells them they’re crazy. All of these tales and more tell you an inspiring story about how America's smallest colony grows into a state that ends up playing a critical role in the American Revolution. Or to put it more simply, they tell you about the story of Rhode Island and I hope you find them as fascinating as I do. Enjoy season 2 coming to you November 5th!
