Today is Wednesday, June 24. Today's devotional is entitled mutual security. I'm gonna read a few verses again today from the account of Jesus wipe washing the disciples feet. This is John chapter 13 verses three through five. Jesus knew that the father had put all things under his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God.
Speaker 1:So he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with a towel that was wrapped around him. We often think of this this scene, this story of Jesus washing the table's feet as as an act of of utter humility from Jesus that he's willing to do this lowly thing. And I think what that misses and we see it in in those verses is that Jesus Jesus is very secure in knowing exactly who he is and what the father is calling him to do is that he takes this lowly position. So it is absolutely humble on Jesus' part.
Speaker 1:But also, he is teaching the disciples something about about how identity connects to to humility. And the fact that the writer John calls out in those verses that Jesus knows that he's about to go to the cross. He knows that he's about to fulfill this purpose and that he he takes this lowly position in that moment. I think speaks to this idea that it's from that secure place that we can we can carry out acts of of sacrificial service in in true humility. One of the things that is captured in Luke's account of the Last Supper is that the disciples were coming into the Last Supper and kind of fighting over the seating arrangement because they were interested in having a position closer to Jesus, looking for a more honored or esteemed position.
Speaker 1:And Jesus flips this on its head by getting up. In a way, he's kinda saying, no one's gonna sit by me because I'm gonna get out of my seat, and I'm gonna come around, and I'm gonna wash all of your feet. And, this was certainly, I would imagine, a humbling experience for the disciples. But it's important for us to remember that this came from from Jesus ultimately being grounded in knowing exactly who he was and exactly who he was created to be. And for us as disciples, when we serve one another sacrificially, this is only an act of true humility.
Speaker 1:It is grounded in an an identity in Christ. We are not Jesus, but we do share an inheritance with Jesus. We've been grafted into the family of God and the people of God. And this should be a source of confidence and humility simultaneously. It's one of the most beautiful things about the gospel.
Speaker 1:So reflect on this today. Are you secure enough in who you are in Christ to be willing to serve in positions that the world would see as lowly?
