Speaker: So you want to
make over your mornings.

You want to become unrecognizable,
and you're going to do it by having

the very best morning routine.

After all

The way you begin is how
you keep going, right?

If every day feels like it's always
falling apart, then clearly you

need a better morning routine.

And what better way to find the
perfect morning routine that's

gonna fix everything than to
watch an hour or more of YouTube

videos all about morning routines?

Sorry

Well, here you go.

This is the last video you need
on morning routines because the

reality is you do not need to copy
anyone else's morning routine.

You don't need more information

And you don't really need
more motivation either

You need to let go of your perfectionism

Hi, I'm Misty Winkler, and you've
found the Christian homemaking

podcast, Simply Convivial.

Convivial means enjoying life together,
and that's the kind of home atmosphere

that we want to create as Christian moms

I've been married for 25 years, have
five kids, two grandkids, and homeschool

I'm also author of the book
Home Is for Hospitality: Why

Your Home and Homemaking Matter

Now, grab a basket of laundry to fold
and let's talk about morning routines

I know it feels like if your day gets
off to a rough start, then the whole

rest of the day is going to be shot.

Or if it feels like all your
days are falling apart by lunch,

it makes sense to look to the
mornings and try to iron that out.

But the truth is, mornings are not magic

If your morning gets off track or
doesn't start the way that you hope,

you are not stuck with a bad day for
the rest of the day And it's also true

if you execute your morning routine
flawlessly and have an awesome quiet

time an hour before the kids get up and
get your exercise in and your coffee

just right, that's no guarantee that the
rest of the day is gonna go your way.

Mornings are not magic

Figuring out the perfect morning routine,
one that works for your friend or your

favorite YouTube personality, is not going
to make all the difference in your life

In fact, when we do get our morning
routine dialed in and it's working really

well for us, it's really not that we
have the ideal morning routine, but it's

usually an indication that we are willing
to do what we are supposed to do and we

persist in doing that until persistence
becomes normal and therefore easier.

But we need that kind of persistence
and willingness to do the right

next thing at all times of the day

And when we practice that skill
first thing in the morning

We're then better able to do it the next
morning, but also throughout the day.

Because every time you practice
persistence at any time of the day, you're

going to continue to improve that skill.

You're putting in the reps, but
every rep counts, not just morning.

Morning reps don't even count double They
are the same weight as any other time that

you choose to do the right next thing.

So that means no matter how your morning
went this morning, today, you can do the

right next thing No matter how fussy the
kids were or how messy your house is,

today you can do the right next thing

Today, you can turn it around.

You don't have to wait for tomorrow.

You don't have to wait for the next Monday

You can turn things around right
now Smile and start is one of my

favorite little mottos, and I have
two ways that you can do that.

The more you persist in doing the right
next thing, the better any morning

routine will work and the better your
day will go at any point of the day

So here are my two tips for turning around
your day and getting the day off to a good

start, whether it's morning or lunchtime
or afternoon or even after dinner.

No matter what time of the day it is,
you can start off on a better foot right

now So the first thing you need to do
when you realize that your day has gone

off track and you need to reset and
realign is to use an alignment card.

This is my term for a Bible verse
or a motto or a quote that brings

you back into line with truth

Truth is a reality outside of us.

We don't find it by looking inward,
and whatever pops into our head is

more likely than not to not be true.

We can't necessarily trust it.

We have to take whatever thoughts or
feelings that we have, especially thoughts

or feelings about being stuck, and
match them up to what God's word says

If they don't match, if they don't
align, we change our thoughts We

take in the scripture, we take in the
truth, and let that determine our next

thoughts We let that be the interpretive
grid that we filter our life through

So take a minute, grab a, an index card
or a Post-it note and write a scripture

that has been speaking to you lately

Maybe just write smile on an
index card or Post-it Note.

Or my favorite, smile and start

Rejoice always.

Again, I will say rejoice

Whether you eat or drink or whatever
you do, do all for the glory of God.

Pick a scripture, any scripture,
write it down, and then read it

several times throughout the day.

Put it up in a very visible spot in
your house, your bathroom mirror,

or in front of your kitchen sink, or
right above your coffee maker, on your

fridge, on your planner, on your phone.

Maybe put a different one in all of
these places or even the same one if you

really want to double down on applying
that scripture to your life right now

When your thoughts are then aligned to
truth and you are repeating truth to

yourself throughout the day, then you need
to get started doing the right next thing

But I know it's hard to tell what the
right next thing to do is because you

have a million things you could be doing.

So here's my little trick.

Get a timer

Maybe a literal timer?

That you set?

Or your watch, or the oven, or the
microwave, an actual timer for 10

minutes Spend that 10 minutes doing
something, anything, taking care of an

area of your house that's bothering you.

Wash the dishes by hand for 10 minutes.

Fold the laundry for 10 minutes.

Something that's been piling up and
you feel bad about, but you don't know

when you're gonna get around to it, and
so it just accumulates, and you keep

feeling guilty about it, but it just
sits there because it feels like it's

gonna take for forever, and you don't
know when you'll be able to deal with it.

You definitely don't know when
you'll have time to finish it.

You don't need to deal with it.

You don't need to finish it.

You just need to put some
time and attention there.

Do it for 10 minutes

And you will be amazed at the change

You will notice how effective your
time and attention is because you will

get farther than you thought you could

You will find it easier to get started
and stay focused because you're only

doing it for 10 minutes instead of
dreading a full, complete Job It doesn't

matter how many dishes there are or
how long it will take to do them all.

Just wash some of the dishes.

See how many you can
wash within 10 minutes.

It's just a little
experiment you're running

Spend 10 minutes clearing and
washing your dining room table

or tidying up the living room,
or sorting through that paper

pile that you're dreading

If you've been going around looking
for the perfect morning routine to

copy so that your days can get started
just right and therefore continue

on just right, then I know you
struggle with perfectionism like I do

And perfectionism prevents us from even
getting started because we don't wanna get

started unless we're going to do it right
and unless we're going to get it done.

And that is why we have so many undone
piles and jobs and tasks and cleaning

things to do accumulating all around us

The perfectionism is a
problem, not a virtue.

It's an obstacle that we can learn how
to jump over and avoid and overcome

It's not a pet that we should be
keeping and treating as an essential

part of us If you are a perfectionist,
you don't have to stay that way.

That is not an essential part of your
person And you're going to be better

off if you let that part of you go.

Trust me.

Been there and done that.

And the 10-minute timer

Is one of my secret weapons
against perfectionism because it

completely removes that option of
knowing exactly the right thing

to do and doing it till it's done.

You're just doing something, anything
for 10 minutes, noticing how it went.

It's an experiment.

It's only 10 minutes.

It's low stakes, and yet you
will get so much more done.

You'll see so much more progress than
you thought possible, and you can do a

10-minute timer at any point of the day
First thing in the morning, lunchtime,

afternoon during kids' naps, after dinner

And when you put 10 minutes of focused
work time into anything, your mood lifts.

Your mood lifts and your motivation
lifts And you feel capable of doing more.

Whereas listening to the perfectionist
story in your head makes you

feel capable of less, makes you
feel more and more uncertain

But you don't need certainty.

You just need 10 minutes doing something
good right in front of you After that

10 minutes, you'll have more clarity
about what you should do after that.

And those 10-minute increments
just build, even if they are

not one right after the other

You don't need a slow morning.

You don't need an ideal morning

The morning is not magic that you
can sprinkle on the rest of your day

Every day, all throughout the
day, we are simply continuing to

persistently do the right next thing.

And every time we practice doing
the right next thing, we continue

to get better and better at doing so

perfectionism and getting out
