Myths About Rhinoplasty (ICD-9-CM: 21.87) in Las Vegas, NV

Clinic Focus: Troell Cosmetic Surgery & Facial Plastic Clinic

Why do myths about rhinoplasty persist?

Myths persist due to outdated beliefs, misinformation, and online speculation. In Las Vegas, cosmetic trends, media portrayal, and a mix of cultural influences amplify misunderstandings. Accurate knowledge helps patients make safe, informed decisions about nose surgery.

What is rhinoplasty and who performs it in Las Vegas?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose for cosmetic or functional reasons.

Dr. Robert J. Troell at Troell Cosmetic Surgery & Facial Plastic Clinic is a board-certified facial plastic surgeon known for advanced rhinoplasty techniques, combining aesthetics with breathing improvement.

Myth 1: Rhinoplasty is only for cosmetic reasons
False.
Functional rhinoplasty treats medical issues such as:
  • Deviated septum
  • Nasal valve collapse
  • Chronic breathing problems
Dr. Troell integrates functional improvements into aesthetic procedures to support both form and function.
Myth 2: All rhinoplasty results look fake
Incorrect.

Natural-looking results depend on:
  • The surgeon’s skill in facial harmony
  • Use of patient-specific planning
  • Conservative tissue modification
Troell Clinic prioritizes anatomical balance. Patient photos show proportional changes with no overdone appearance.
Myth 3: Only women get nose jobs in Las Vegas

Not true.
According to ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons), 18% of rhinoplasty patients are men.
Male rhinoplasty at Troell Clinic includes:
  • Stronger dorsal lines
  • Preserved masculinity
  • Minimal scarring via closed approaches
Myth 4: Rhinoplasty is extremely painful
Pain is minimal and manageable.
Most patients describe post-op discomfort as mild pressure.
Pain control protocols at Troell Clinic include:
  • Local nerve blocks
  • NSAIDs
  • Cold compress therapy
Recovery time is usually 7-10 days, with most patients returning to work within a week.

Myth 5: Rhinoplasty leaves permanent visible scars
Mostly false.
  • Closed rhinoplasty leaves no external scar.
  • Open rhinoplasty has a small columellar scar that fades over time.
Dr. Troell uses micro-sutures and advanced closure techniques to minimize scarring. Post-op scar treatments are offered in-clinic.

Myth 6: All rhinoplasty procedures are the same
Incorrect.
Each rhinoplasty is unique due to:
  • Nasal anatomy
  • Ethnic features
  • Skin thickness
  • Breathing needs
Troell Clinic customizes surgical plans using 3D imaging and rhinoplasty morphing software, offering patients a preview of potential outcomes.

Myth 7: You can choose any nose shape you want
Not accurate.
Rhinoplasty must respect structural limits and facial proportion.
Example: A small nose on a wide face may disrupt harmony.
Dr. Troell performs facial proportion analysis to ensure natural integration of the new nose shape into existing features.

Myth 8: Revision surgery is always necessary
False.
  • National revision rate: ~10-15%
  • Troell Clinic revision rate: under 5% (based on internal case studies 2018–2023)
Revisions happen due to trauma, poor healing, or unrealistic expectations—not poor surgery alone.

Myth 9: You can’t breathe properly after rhinoplasty
Untrue with proper technique.
Functional rhinoplasty includes septoplasty or turbinate reduction.
Dr. Troell restores or enhances nasal airflow using:
  • Spreaders grafts
  • Nasal valve support
  • Internal nasal splints
Myth 10: Las Vegas is not a hub for high-quality rhinoplasty
Factually incorrect.
Las Vegas hosts several board-certified specialists.
Troell Clinic has:
  • Over 20 years of facial surgery experience
  • Hundreds of positive patient reviews
  • Recognition for combining medical precision with artistic refinement

What is Troell Cosmetic Surgery & Facial Plastic Clinic?

Facial Plastic Surgery clinic specializing in high-definition liposuction, face and body implant surgery, fat transfer, and advanced facial procedures.

Dr. Robert J Troell M.D:

There are several myths with rhinoplasty. The first one is, is the anesthesia dangerous? Well, ninety five percent of my patients we do it under oral and intravenous sedation, and it's very, very safe. People get minimal nausea and vomiting. You can also do it under general anesthesia.

Dr. Robert J Troell M.D:

The anesthesia today with cardiac monitoring is very very safe. Number two, can any surgeon do rhinoplasty? Well as I mentioned I have a thirty year history of doing rhinoplasties trained at the American Academy of Facial Plastics, Otolaryngology, and the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery so I have a lot of experience. In my history we've invented with my partners, two different surgical procedures for the nose to improve both function and aesthetic results. So it's good to have experience.

Dr. Robert J Troell M.D:

Most people that are cosmetic or plastic surgeons will agree that the most complex cosmetic surgery is a rhinoplasty especially a revision rhinoplasty. So yes, it's important to have someone with good experience and training to be the best rhinoplasty surgeon for you. Another myth, rhinoplasty is very painful. It's actually minimally uncomfortable. Uncomfortable.

Dr. Robert J Troell M.D:

So during the procedure we do nerve blocks, local anesthesia. So if you had it done under IV sedation, it's minimally uncomfortable during the procedure. Afterwards, people only take pain medication either Tylenol or an oral narcotic analgesic for one or two days and that's all. Okay? Another myth, all rhinoplasties give you a fake appearance.

Dr. Robert J Troell M.D:

Well that's very rare. The only patients I have noted either that I performed or other patients is other doctors on patients is that they have a very ski slope look. A Goldman tip and a more of a ski slope look in my opinion is a fake nose. So we luckily during my thirty year career have not produced that type of fake appearance. You want it to be congruent with the rest of your face harmonious.

Dr. Robert J Troell M.D:

So that's why we look at the eyes, the nose, the mouth, and the and the skin. They make the biggest impact. So besides blepharoplasty, the rhinoplasty or nose job makes a significant impact on your appearance. Since your nose is right next to your mouth, doing lip filler or lip implants to make your lips full, Sometimes we do a lip lift at the same time or doing something to your chin. People who have a retruded or small chin, if we put a extended anatomical implant, when we do the rhinoplasty, they get a superior result.

Dr. Robert J Troell M.D:

So the results are natural. Okay? We design our surgical technique to get your individual result, what you're looking for, to get your ideal outcome. So do we use sometimes other technologies? Yes.

Dr. Robert J Troell M.D:

Sometimes we use cartilage grafting from your septum or your ear. We can reduce the size of the turbinates using radiofrequency ablation to make your nasal breathing better. We can add a splint to your nose post opalties for a short period of time to prevent you having any further bleeding or swelling to the dorsum. So all these things are designed to get you the best result. So the myths that people brought up, really none of those that I've mentioned are, practical in today's rhinoplasty surgeon.
