The State News discuss black culture, trending topics, issues in the black community, black clubs at MSU, and educate listeners about the black community.
(Shakyra) Hey y'all, it's your girl Shakyra Mabone
(Jada) Jada Vasser
(Anthony) and Anthony Brinson and this is all shades of chocolate where we bring
(Shakyra) the sweetest
(Jada) the hottest
(All three host) black culture to MSU
(Jada and Shakyra making jokes on how they're "big around the back", lol)
All right, wegot some big our big our bags, we gotta be bigger on the back this food. We got to talk about food. I love food. You shake your head. Yes. Do I have to say that to the viewers, but we're gonna get into you're gonna get it? Right, right. Alright y'all, so we have our food episode today, you know, title sugar, spice and everything food. Be careful. Be careful. The big banks out there, you know? Because he gave me tusky
(Jada) All right, bro. So, food in general, you know, everybody loves food. But food in the black community is one thing that's like, a signified staple for us from many, many different dishes. You know, historically, it's a staple all the way up until how your mama cooked the mac and cheese to dress in the Kenyan potato salad. What you like and don't like, food and food have just been in our culture. So yeah. wants to get this started. I'm not the question. As you can tell Anthony I speak bro.
(All three of us) I actually was just realizing I think that's the first time I haven't started the monologue. Big Shakyra threw me under the bus and I don't eat.
(Anthony) No, I was gonna let them cook. But yeah, just the reason... The reason why when I proposed them, so to them, it was so interesting to me, because one, they're both and especially my girlfriend, all them are really good cooks from what I've taste from them. I don't think I've actually taste... And just like Jada was mentioning earlier, just with how important food is really just with life in general, but especially in the black community. You got different spices, seasonings, different ways you make like they mentioned Thanksgiving food, like I've always heard with. I'm dressing for example. I've never a dress and I'll get into this later. But I'm a very very picky eater. Like it's kind of bad, but um, I've heard like dressing and I'm anxious to see your opinion. Is it supposed to be moist supposed to be drier? It's supposed to be like, I don't know. I've heard two different things.
(Jada) It's technically supposed to be moist, but I'm addressing hater I hate what bread to me.
(Shakyar) Yeah. Tastes like and you can't eat it with every and any like, sigh if that makes sense. Yeah, I don't know. Like every Thanksgiving when I drink some juice and stuff. That aftertaste just be like, What is this?
(Jada) But then the point is, is supposed to be like, what? Like that's, that's the whole point of it's supposed to have that moisture in it. But I don't know if I'm kind of a texture person. So eating it. I just be like, Oh, let me know maybe. Right. Not to say like, you know, people don't cook it right. I just I've tasted like multiple people just delicious, nasty.
(Anthony) And just you I was gonna agree. But there's a running joke between us that I can't say done about food since I don't eat but no dressing isn't my favorite. Oh, and just the reason why it's so to explain the running joke. So I like I mentioned earlier, I'm a very very, very picky eater. And it's to the point where like, I have a contest when somebody tells me they're a picky eater. I'm like, when I first met Jada, she was oh, yeah, picky, too. And then I was like, well, let's see how picky Are you? So I use this every time when somebody tells me they picky. I'm like, I don't eat fruits or vegetables. And then usually most 90% of time they just go silent. And they like oh, I mean like Yeah, it's really bad. And Jade has been one of the closest people who's been as picky as me because she don't eat fruit either. But she also eat vegetables. So I'm gonna let me explain our perspective of bikinis. Because when it gets bad it's bad.
(Jada) Yeah, but I have not met nobody on this earth to be the level Anthony picky when he told me the stuff he don't eat. And I mean, the basic stuff. I'm like, you don't like that? Like the first Ermita The first thing we talked about was food. You know me like I said, I'm big run it back. I'm the president. So you know, so you know, food food is you know, food is me, but the stuff you don't eat, I'm like, Are you serious? But ya know, I hate fruit. I don't eat fruit. It's nasty. I don't even know why it's nasty to me. I just don't like the taste of it. And the most rude to me it is sweet. So it kind of like takes the the flavor out of it because I thought this was be sweet. And then it's mushy. But um, I would still consider myself a picky eater because you know the people that say they'll try anything once. I'm not going to try it zero times. There's stuff that I wouldn't try it all just because if it doesn't look right to me, I'm not gonna eat it because looking at it, my brain will start imagining it as some nasty because it looks nasty. Now my stomach hurt. Now I can't eat none. Like Oh no, my my brain misses me sometimes with food. So I'll be like, This isn't like how this was. I'm not gonna eat it.
(Shakyra) I get it though. Because you know, like when people said they don't like to sit and think about eating eggs because they start to think about like,
(Jada) that's me with a lot of foods though. Yeah, like if I sit and think about food for too long. Like it could be my favorite like chickens my favorite food. But sometimes if I just sit while I'm over analyzing chicken, but not I don't want to eat it because I'm like, this is a burden.
(Shakyra) but I don't know me I love Frou Frou is just I need to start. We need to go go to the grocery store so I can give me some fruit.
(Jada) Yeah. For me I love vegetables. Yeah, so I see almost every vegetable so if I don't eat the fruit I know at least I'm getting the vegetable crazy. Okay, but let's get into the food that you do eat Yeah, Thanksgiving food. What you eat at the Thanksgiving table? No, because you better say the one food that you can eat.
(Anthony) Say a macaroni and cheese. Some years it's just that some Oh, my two I really love the ham like the honeybee mac and cheese I'd be calmer and I corn some calm.
(All three hosts) I used Hawaiian bring another accent take my black car. I don't know like cornbread. Really? Like the Jiffy corn man. No, I don't explain why because I can get you depending on your reasoning. I didn't ever like I don't know what it tastes or tail lays back to a texture all of that sounds like a really nasty aftertaste too. But gritty. Oh yeah. Like Sand
(Jada) Yeah. Like, like most people, different cornbread, cornbread muffins. It all just tastes nasty to me.
(Anthony) And one of the questions I wanted to ask you specifically for this episode was just about cooking. Like I said, I let them cook. We never get that episode. They literally cook if Janae isn't cooking, or if we're not eating out. And I just want to ask, what does it mean to you of the art of cooking? Because even when I like cook the small things I do. I love just being in my own like zone and like putting the ingredients in that I want to so just from some people who actually know how to cook. Like for real for real? What does it meant from like, as a kid seeing people cook it and cooking yourself and then still taking ingredients from past people who you've looked up to just what's the whole dynamic of that if you can, first Shakyra?
(Shakyra) Well, my dad, first of all, he always tells me like, you're not supposed to rush the cooking. You're supposed to let it literally cook like he literally tells me Okay, well, you know, just let's just let it simmer. Like it's okay, it's gonna be done. Because it's just like yum. Well, he could he just be like, I don't know like this man. He just be everything like he just like analyze it. And he just like, make like, make love to it. That makes sense. But it's his full be like so good. And that's how I learned how to cook by just looking at her. Well, he he made me get in the kitchen. I'm gonna learn today. Yeah, yeah. But it just like, yeah, it's just the art of cooking. You just literally have to just take things slow and just like, be in the zone, like you said and being like, just how you're saying so before? Yeah, you know how the scene where he was like playing the piano. And he just, you know, that's what cooking means to me. Like, that's the art of cooking. So
(Jada) yeah, so, um, for me learning how to cook. Um, I didn't really have somebody saying, Oh, come in the kitchen. And like, I'm gonna tell you what to do. Yeah, it was more so like with my mom, and she learned how to cook, do my grandma, if she would just say she would pull up a chair. She was sitting in the kitchen. And she was sitting in the kitchen every day when my great grandma cooked breakfast when she cooked lunch if she cooked it, and especially when she cooked dinner, then during the holidays, she would just sit and watch. And I'm like, Mom, did you ever take notes when she cooks? She like, no, no, I'm like, Well, how did you remember what to do? She was like, I saw her do it. And I copied it. And I just knew what to do. And I said, Well, you know how to you know how to say black people don't take no measurements. I'm like, Well, how do you know how much stuff to put in there? She was like, you just know. And I never know what what you just know. But then I start cooking my twin sister Jenna. You know, we took her her law. She cooks a lot of the times, and I stand in the kitchen like Janae stood in the kitchen with my mom. And I'm like, how do you just move like, you know what you're doing? And she like, you just know
(Jada and Shakyra) it's muscle memory to us? Yeah. It's like it's routine. Yeah.
(Jada) Especially with my mom. Like, she wasn't a kid. Like she said she was cooking since she was like 1516 and she never stopped. So when she had my older sister, she would cook when she had us she would cook and I won't cook all the time. You know, when I started cooking, she was like long guns. But when I was younger, you know, she was really really cooking. So it she said like, there were like the Thanksgiving recipes. They there were no recipes. It was just you either knew it or you did it. Some people my family don't know it, but some people do. And she was the people that did so now a lot of times I think I especially when I go home and I see my mom cook I try to do something she doesn't I do actually remember a lot of the stuff she does. So I'm like oh whoa kind of is a muscle memory thing like you just know. Like you just feel it when you put the right amount of stuff in there like yeah electric car and said it's like a love thing. Like you get in that zone. You get in tune with making the food because of course you want it to taste good. So you wouldn't like slack off on your own food so you don't really put all the trigger into making your food you know,
(Shakyra) I'm gonna say like, why did you Think that family members be gatekeeping a food recipe like? I don't know, I've never understood that.
(Jada and Shakyra) ) Well, in my family, I wouldn't call it gatekeeping. It's just, I remember I think I asked my great grandma once, like if she ever had a recipe. They just never wrote down what they did. She said, I couldn't tell you what I did you watch. Okay, that's what my mom did. Told me. I'm like, Okay, well, that makes sense.
(Jada) Yeah, she just said you would have to look and see what I did. Then when you saw what I did. You could do it yourself. But of course, you know, I asked my mom a question like, How long am I supposed to keep it in there? And you know, that she'd never give a specific answer, it'd be arranged 30 to 40, whatever you like it don't really is really your preference when you cook. If you like something really well done, you cook it well done. If you liked it a little bit more tanky you add those spices. It's really up to your taste buds and everybody tastebuds are different. That's why there's so much variety around cooking and how different stuff tastes because your taste buds aren't going to be like the next ones. Like we don't like the same stuff. Like we always have conversations about seasonings. He also doesn't like some seasoning on his food. Oh, wait, yeah, that's what makes cooking so magical. You can always learn you can always evolve with different cultures and all that stuff.
(Anthony) So I'm gonna jump in real quick from what she just mentioned. So I'm gonna tell the story and it's gonna make sense at the end of the story. So when I was young, I've always really really loved making cheese because it's one of only things I ever ate. So one time I was with my auntie house and she made me mac and cheese and she handed me the ball and I tasted it and I'm like, just don't taste right. Like it tastes like real strong. What would you put in it? She like, Oh, I'll put some pepper in it. Since then. I've been really traumatized. I'm like, pepper.
(Shakyra and Anthony) Because it's just like, pepper on mac and cheese. That's kind of it. No, no, no. So he's just like, he was just tasting on the back of your throat just
(Anthony) fast forward, like let's see. 1516 years later. Short five, three girl named Janae. Vassar. Thank you. All right. Maroney bowl and when I say I look thank God I turned to see what she's about to put in the macaroni it all flat. Oh my like Janae What do you like pepper? I'm like listen, do not put no I put everything I love my girlfriend to death if you put if you put pepper in my macaroni cheese I won't eat it I literally would not eat it.
(Jada) but that also goes back to you know family traditions My family's from the south we use heavy spices everything that I cook it's how I grew up that's all we ate. We ate everything with pepper in it everything with Laurie season the salt and the onion powder garlic powder. Everything had that in it no so when this missing I'm like oh this is nasty because
(All three hosts) what was that you put it in your? I think it was either in the eggs or the it might have been both and I was just awkward and everything the eggs It was so good but I was fine no I never really did my eggs had cheese a dash of milk on your powder and garlic powder. Yeah, that's fine. And then the broccoli I was like way I never had everything my mama cookie had those were the staples she put it in everything unless when we got older we decided like okay I'm gonna add it but everything she cooked it was goes on your protocol that part of Laurie's sometimes so to fit needed it and pepper that was her staple That's all she needed in the food was immaculate so I said okay these since then yeah, there's the Trinity like I put season assault on my burgers when I fry oh love that so good. Oh my gosh and
(Anthony) then it's one thing if you ration with it, but like I made some macaroni bows for me and Janae and she was like makes you put pepper mine I'm like bet how much you want in there she said a little bit put a little bit in this you also want an onion and garlic she tastes she like that I had her pepper she y'all can see my heart but she dashing that does
(Jada) That's how my family cooks. Like, you know, we are aggressive with the season is because we want you to taste it. Like of course you know, you know, you know Mr. Chase, when you know you can't be as heavy as you want to with the seasoning because other circumstances, you know, you trail back a little bit and you learn how to okay, maybe you don't eat a lot. But you know, back in the day, they said my great grandma aunties. That's how they cook. They cook have Yeah, so I learned that this is how food is supposed to taste. That's all I ate. That's how I ate it. You know, when I get in the kitchen. I mean, let me do my one, two, you know what I'm saying? Let's see if I get the spirits, my Auntie's and my great grandma in me to you know, embody this food and whatnot. And that's just how it comes out. You know
(Shakyra) I was gonna say, you know, I feel like it's all of our ancestors in us when we cook if that makes sense. No, absolutely.
(Anthony) All right, so I'm gonna put Jade on the spot and I'm gonna see I'm gonna try and get an answer out of her because she might not answer I got two questions about her family cooking. Oh, so her family began for me. It's somebody who's a very picky eater. They can they can tell you bro, um, put her on the spot. Who's the best cookie a family? Oh, my mama. No, you gotta go. I was gonna call it big. Oh I'm so sorry. I started how can you say that? Because I actually have a different answer based on what I've eaten from your families.
(Jada) I definitely say I'd say my mom is always gonna be at the top because she's the person who started it. If it wasn't my mama Janae wouldn't cook the way she could. Jazz would have cooked the way she cooked. My sister fantastic cooks don't get me wrong, they can throw you like geneia 20 Chick fil A mastership.
(Shakyra) Because I said, I will say something about neck bones and collagen. And she was like, oh, yeah, I could cook that. And I was like
(Jada) oh my god. Net bone stream pizza. white potatoes. Come on. I stopped playing. That's crazy. I would never say a woman because if it wasn't for her, we wouldn't be cooking it all. She was the one who we saw in the kitchen. Nonsense. It was only here in my house. So who was cooking the food? We were kids. My mama understand who was cooking the big Thanksgiving dinners who still cook them? My mom
(Jada and Shakyra) I can't give me I can't bring me back a plate for this because I've never had her and my mama cooking. You gotta get it was there because it'd be? It'd be go. So yeah, but yeah, definitely. Definitely. Definitely my mama for sure.
(Anthony) So my answer would be my girlfriend Janae but also your uncle Andre. Like I feel like Andre and Janae like they really love they cook. So he's up there too. Yeah, like
(Jada and Anthony) Have you listened to make maybe some food when I come home? And he can also make desserts too. He made those desserts. I was there. I were, um, where was we just all LED? I think it was Nana. Was that Nana house then? Oh, you told my mama thing. Yeah, I think that was jazz. Oh, okay.
(Jada) So shop with Miss B's baked goods with my older sister. She got to for all the treats. But yeah, Uncle Andre and then my big sister jazz with the desserts. I don't have to store for nothing. I got bakers and cooks and I'm blessed.
(Anthony) So I got some rapid fire food questions for both of y'all. Just shoot on an answer. When y'all can't Oh, man, if I got another family. Good question, too. All right. So rapid fire real quick. So best thanksgiving dish.
(All three hosts) Mac and cheese. Yeah, it has to be the mac and cheese and a ham. I'm gonna say my mac and cheese. Yeah, yeah. That's love. Great. To top it off with a net. Y'all know my favorite is banana pudding. Oh my god. I love that. Audience Listeners y'all know y'all like banana pudding? For me is mac and cheese and greens. Yeah, so green spaghetti. Yes or no? Yeah, put a dash and we're not putting cocoa sugar in the spaghetti. Now. You remember the salt guy when he did this? That's what you do with this. Sugar? spoonful of sugar but not even a spoonful of sugar hot sauce and cheese must be good. Must be good. I don't know if that's my speaking. I thought the same thing until I actually tried it and it's actually pretty good. Like I've tasted to where they they put more of a pinch it was like a like a medium amount and like you I can tell it was sweet. But it was good to me. I'm actually pretty good.
(All three hosts and Elle) Elle, our temporary podcast coordinator wrote something on a piece of paper that she is cracking up. A Spoonful of Sugar. Sugar sugar all right.
(All three hosts) Most overrated dessert. Sweet Potato Pie. I'm sorry. All of them. I don't eat dessert. I'm sorry. Oh, right. Besides ice cream. Listen, I was having a conversation with my dad and my answer peach cobbler. I cannot stand. Okay, well, I like it but I see why you say is overrated. I'll choose banana put it over peach cobbler. Even apple pie does the questions never agree when I got a new favorite food but JD can't say chicken. I can't say mac and cheese. Are you serious? Yes. Yeah. What else? I got? Pigs. Um, I know you. Mines. I like potato chips Alfredo. Alfredo. But yeah, like potato. Hey, favorite food and it's not chicken. You don't like tacos? No, I don't like tacos. That's what I say. I'll be talking about me picking up a picky meal eater. You're like picky individual eaters. Like these meals. I just won't be like I won't be tacos. I don't know my tacos. But you ain't for me I know I'm weird. Golly. Oh, my food. Chicken. It will have to be making cheese for me. Okay, I do that I do that and ironically enough macaroni and cheese isn't my favorite fruits like third because my second is I literally cheese fries and at first on little corned beef sandwiches. Corned beef sandwiches don't get me started my mom was she was here that was the one thing she could you're here to hand clap and does heading to your
mama can you make some you know it's been? It's been you can make some
(Anthony) and I'm gonna put her on the spot. Our special podcasts are near to L because she I'm pretty sure not only you can choose waves your mom you said as a dietitian, right. So if you could come to the mic, what's your favorite food? What's your most favorite food and most overrated foodie? Oop, I'm allowed to take my mic see what they have real quick. So I'm gonna be I'm gonna be right back.
(Elle) Hi, I'm Elle. I have a complicated relationship with so my mother is a dietitian as well as a chef and she also has a master's degree in public health. That's not relevant. I just love her. So I grew up around very well cooked food because like I said she was a chef, she went to culinary school. Interesting. What Shakyra What you said about food taking time. She when you work as a professional chef, she was actually the first female on chef at register Chop House in Rochester. It's fast. It's she got they send food like down the line. And if you are in the way she got hit in the face with a fish. Oh, because she didn't move back fast enough. Oh, yes. But because she because she is I would have quit but because she is a dietitian. I also was not I was not raised around any junk food. Pop Tarts, chips, sugar, cereals, cereals, sugary beverages. I was not used to and so I've been you know, learning my own way with that. But I'm a decent Cook. I'm learning how to cook. I think I'm a better Baker. My What do you bake? I make lots of cakes and cupcakes. I make really really good Nutella brownies. Would I try the recipe for the first time with Anthony and I'd never made it before. What happened? He didn't like me to my face. That was semi his birthday. It was my birthday. Yeah, I had never made it before. it was half chocolate half vanilla almond butter. Yeah, the pan at Walmart. And it was not a nice pan and I made it at work. Not this work didn't work. Yes, but that was not what I was asked to at all. So to recap for when this gets out. My mother is a chef and a dietitian. So I was raised on very well made food but also very healthy food. i i My favorite food is probably like steak. Something like that my dad makes
(Shakyra) Do y'all like it? You know like well dumb eating well or
(Jada, Shakyra and Elle) medium? The only correct answer was it wasn't I want my notes like this. This stuff isn't even well done. This is correct. No, I'm a good medium. Well. I like that saying red meats. It's medium or medium rare and then obviously hope this is obvious chicken or fish must be cooked chicken is 165 Fish is 185 Please do not mess that up. You will seriously get sick. You can mess yourself up it will tell you. Yeah, my favorite over my most overrated food in my opinion is pi. Really? Yes to call me every fruit should not be hot. So you don't like your pineapples on pizza? No. Here she go, bro. I pineapple to me is the last acceptable point. Like I don't like it but that's fine. But once you start like a Big Mac pizza it's like enough. Different Nirma that's just a lot.
(Elle) So pie any anything where fruit is hot with the exception of like, Oh no, this vegetables. I don't like hot vegetables either with the exception of like steamed things and obviously potatoes or carrots can pretty much can't be more Yeah,
(Shakyra) that's her nickname yada status nickname carrot. It was a joke. It was Yeah,
(Elle) good fruit. Or most your most overrated food. Definitely pie and favorite fruit food is probably steak. I also really love chicken caesar salad. much dressing on that and also when y'all say dressing earlier, my mom would be so embarrassed now. So dressing earlier I thought you meant salad dressing. And then he said no when I used to be moist and I was like what is dry salad dressing. Bro. Okay, so thank you for having me. I'm gonna give the like Oh, yay, thank
(Jada) what's your favorite struggle food?
(Jada and Shakyra) Well not struggle food. Just easy to make food. Yeah,
(All three hosts) man. I mean you can never go wrong with noodles. So I know but I'm trying to think I love a good bologna you say oh wait you can't go wrong. You a you can't go wrong with that hotel when you cook it. Wait, wait, wait a bologna sandwich when you put some cheese right, right. All right. I'm surprised you won't say Be honest. I forgot. Yep, let me let me tell you something. Yeah
(Jada) young Jada, toward those things up and Janae will be so confused as to why I liked it so much. It was a phase that's on my mind bummy Thomas snacking man. Oh my God my God today I don't even know more now though. That was a kid thing. I was like yeah, I'm done with that. But back in the day and oh man.
(Anthony) Alright, so my answer if I don't say noodles or Vienna sausages shot on my sister is her creation so it's a very simple creation Do you get it all right he's a cheese put it on the bread but hear me out here's where you get different cheese No no no no trust me that's where you get different folded piece of bread and we call it a cheese for so long grocery
(All three hosts) for the cornerstone no no we did during these months we've handled chips Chi Chi photic oddities posted the try that we have a toaster so it was really put it that way okay yeah I got this cheesy chart app but me I'm gonna get some some tips and just sprinkle with some Kool Aid, okay, speaking of which wasn't at the second one you said favorite color flavor. Well, I said how do you make your kool aid but you know that's a little bit long but what's your favorite Kool Aid flavor? We can
(Jada) um, mix flavors. Like I mix like the one the red and the blue I mix it because my uncle had did it one time and also it was good. But then when I have grape I make it by itself. I don't know why. It's just okay I mixed it right in the blue. I make great by itself but I want to mix is the pink pack like strawberry? I think it's like pink lemonade. I want to mix that with the red
(All three hosts) Yeah, cuz I mix it with so I get the tropical one and the pink lemonade one and the red one. Oh my Yeah, I want to mix it I don't drink Kool Aid no more. But yeah, back then. I was about to say high tech. I didn't really drink Kool Aid or I didn't drink the mixture Kool Aid growing up it was always the jammers. So Oh yeah. Cherry Kool Aid jammers. I still drink those those my favorites. One of my lunches
(Anthony) and with that being said there's been a really dope episode I'm glad ale got to get on the mic and said bad things. Do you guys want to ended up anything specific?
(All three hosts) Guy you see one suppose I still do. I used to I like the sub ones. So good. I only ate the ones with like, Where was the hammer the turkey? Oh, I never had pizza ones. Yeah I had the pizza ones. Those are kind of good to know. Pizza. And I never ate the sandwich but I always used to say the worst one is the noggins one I ate that joke one time oh my god somebody was turned in as a child so I'll never do this to snack classroom that's the thing like school lunches though. They would milk milk. Why don't you give me milk with a juicy cheeseburger? Why am I eating lunch at 10 in the morning? I eat your lunch and then you feed me chocolate milk and then you take out the kids like
(Shakyra) oh I'm telling you we they just like started giving out water water they know that was mad because it's just like it was already bad enough that they didn't let us carry water bottles to school I don't know what that was like the case with jaw.
(Jada) Yeah, they tried to like they went back and fortunately oh you can't have water bottle Oh, you can't have a water bottle but I mean towards the end of the year they really got lacs and just didn't care. Yeah, but at the beginning I was like yeah, no water bottles you can't spill the water use the water fountain which is nasty.
(All three hosts) all I'm gonna say to end it off is imagine how I eat now and imagine me being at school. It was very hard because I would never know that notice. Where we PCSD we begin our batches episode right on full already. Oh my god
(Anthony) this has been all shades of chocolate where we brought
(Shakyra) the sweetest
(Jada) the hottest
(All three hosts) black culture to MSU
(Jada) and remember to stay sweet bye
