the Henny Flynn podcast

Welcome to Tuesday’s Thought – a short, reflective invitation to go a little deeper with the themes from the latest episode of the Henny Flynn podcast. In this bonus recording I share three observations, each with a reflective question that may support your own compassionate self-enquiry.

When you reflect on the themes we covered in last weekend's episode: Here Was Yesterday’s There: The Habit of Looking Ahead (S18E1)
  1. Where has your mind been living today - and what happens when you gently return to now?
  2. Is there a thought you’ve been carrying that belongs to a time that hasn’t yet arrived?
  3. What beauty is already here, quietly waiting to be noticed?
And, of course, if you haven't yet had a chance to listen to the episode that inspired these reflections, it's there, waiting for you.
With love

What is the Henny Flynn podcast?

A space to settle in and listen, and see where the episode takes you. This inspiring, reflective podcast is an invitation to travel deeper, with compassionate self-enquiry.

Henny shares insights from her own life, alongside practices that help us connect with our inner wisdom, explore our relationship with change and find a greater sense of flow. Henny believes we all hold our own answers, so there are no one-size-fits-all solutions here. This is a space to be with what’s true for you, and to grow from there.

If you’re drawn to slowing down, listening in, and exploring what it means to live with greater authenticity, this podcast is for you. Guided by psychology, mindfulness, therapeutic coaching, flow journaling, and everyday compassion, we explore ideas that help us step further into our inner worlds, in order to shape the changes we seek in our outer worlds.

Henny Flynn:

Hey my darlings and welcome to Tuesday's Thought. I'm Henny and this is a short reflective invitation to go a little deeper with the themes from our latest episode. Let's see where it takes us. So first of all welcome to this brand new season of Tuesday's thoughts. This is really an opportunity to briefly reflect on the themes that came up in the last episode of the Henny Flynn podcast and I often find after I've recorded these episodes that something new reveals itself or a fresh thought begins to form and I wanted to take these you know five ten minutes on a Tuesday just to reflect back on you know what I shared in the the weekends episode and see whether that sparks any fresh thoughts for you too.

Henny Flynn:

So, last weekend I talked about how here was once yesterday's there you know these yearnings that we can often have where we live in the future and really forget about how it is to be present. I talked about you know what we can miss when we live for there rather than living in the here and now. I also shared a couple of really lovely quotes from Thich Nhat Hanh and Ram Daz that always help to bring me home. And I talked a little bit around how presence doesn't mean avoiding change, you know being in the present moment isn't about being stuck in any way, it's really about being able to be with everything that is. And so there were three reflections that I wanted to share that maybe deepen thinking.

Henny Flynn:

One is, you know, sometimes we might think that we're planning, we might think that we're preparing for the future, but really what we're doing is we're leaving the present. But also you know potentially energetically leaving ourselves or leaving parts of ourselves where we spend so much time in the future that we can actually miss so much of what's happening in the now. So a question to pose really, a question to ask ourselves is, you know, where has your mind been today? And what happens when you return to this moment? And maybe even just being here right now listening to this is a call to action in a way, a call back into the present moment.

Henny Flynn:

So you know it's a reflection that we can return to each time our awareness is raised and we go oh gosh there I am in the future again or there I am in the past again and maybe just really gently inquiring of ourselves oh like where have I been and how is it to come back into this present moment? So that's my first reflection. My second one, I think is quite an interesting thing that there is no such thing as the future. Wiser minds than mine have shared that before. And this idea that really there is only ever this present moment.

Henny Flynn:

The future doesn't exist and the past has gone. So there is only this moment and this moment and this moment and this moment and on it goes. And so a reflection here can be, is there a thought that you've been carrying that belongs to a time that hasn't yet arrived. Often that's what worrying is, it might be built out of something challenging or tricky that happened in the past and then we overlay that with our thoughts about the future, maybe worrying about what might happen to us or what someone might say or how it might be for us. So asking ourselves that question of, is there a thought that we've been carrying that belongs to a time that hasn't arrived?

Henny Flynn:

Can be interesting. Maybe it's completely appropriate for you to be carrying that thought and maybe it's taking energy that could be better used elsewhere. You know as with all of this work, there's no right or wrong, there's only this compassionate self inquiry, this gentle checking in with ourselves. And then I mentioned in the episode on Saturday that there were a couple of Thich Nhat Hanh and Ram Daz quotes that I really liked and if you want to hear those and have a listen again to the episode or see the episode show notes. There's another Thich Nhat Hanh quote which is widely shared.

Henny Flynn:

He says the present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it. And I think when we remember that Thich Nhat Hanh was a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who was in Vietnam during the American war. In Vietnam they call it the American war, obviously in America they call it the Vietnam war, you choose what you want to say. And so you know he really, really understood what incredibly challenging times look like and he was a wonderful student of human nature and so for someone like him who has this deep, deep awareness and who never turned away, who never looked away, for someone like him to say the present moment is filled with joy and happiness, if you are attentive you will see it, I think is another call to action, maybe to ask ourselves, you know, what beauty is already here and how can we attend to that.

Henny Flynn:

And again that doesn't mean closing our eyes and our ears to the suffering in the world but it can mean being more available to the joy as well as the pain. So, there we go. That's your Tuesday thought and I'll be back with a new episode of the Henny Flynn podcast on Saturday. And as always, you can return to the latest episode that inspired these thoughts whenever you like. And I would love to hear any reflections that you have and you know like I said this is an experiment let's see how these new bonus episodes go and if they feel useful and if they do we'll continue.

Henny Flynn:

All right my darlings sending a hug and a wave.
