This podcast provides practical training for convenience store sales associates. Each episode covers real situations that new employees face during a shift, including customer service, merchandising, inventory, safety, and day-to-day store operations.
Many stores do not have time to train employees properly. Dive helps close that gap by explaining how convenience stores actually work and how associates can become more confident and effective on the job.
If you are new to the convenience store industry or want to improve your skills behind the counter, this podcast will help you understand the work, the expectations, and the small habits that lead to success in a busy store.
EPISODE 71: THE COLD WAR (THE COOLER)
You know the feeling. You grab your hoodie, even though it's 95 degrees outside. You pull the heavy silver handle. The suction pops. You step inside, and the fan hits you in the face. 34 degrees. The hum of the compressor. The smell of cardboard and condensation. For a Sales Associate, the Cooler is the 'Forbidden Zone.' You want to get in, throw some monsters on the shelf, and get out before your fingers go numb. But the Cooler is where the money is made. If you hate the freeze, you are in the Dive phase. Today, we are going to teach you how to win the Cold War. Welcome to the vault—and welcome to C-Store Legends.
Let's be honest. Nobody likes stocking the cooler. It’s cold, it’s cramped, and the boxes are heavy. But here is the reality: If they can't see the label, they won't buy the drink. A customer spends about 4 seconds scanning the door. If they see an empty black hole where their favorite energy drink should be, they don't ask you if you have it in the back. They just walk away. That empty slot didn't just lose a sale; it lost a regular.
Most clerks do what I call the "Lazy Front." They pull one bottle forward to hide the gap, but behind it? Nothing. Air. That is a lie. And the next customer is going to expose it. We are going to switch to a tactic called "The Wall of Sales." When you are in the box, you aren't just filling holes. You are building a wall. Every label facing out. Every row 2-deep minimum. No gaps. No tilted bottles.
Stop trying to stock the whole cooler. It’s overwhelming. Focus on the "Power Rows." The Energy Drinks. The Waters. The Teas. These are the items that pay your paycheck. If the diet soda on the bottom shelf is low, we survive. If the Monster pipeline is empty, we die.
But before we freeze our fingers off, let's check in on a man who is sweating it out in a crumbling church to save his legacy.
Johnny stood in the candlelight of a crumbling church. His Padre handed him a map. An ancient parchment with a faded 'X'. And then, the warning dropped like an anchor... 'The ships—La Muerte and La Sancha—are waiting at El Puerto. But los enemigos are coming. You have to act rápido.' Two ships. One night. A legacy on the line. Johnny didn't hesitate. He grabbed the map, he grabbed the mezcal, and he ran toward his destiny.
Johnny had to act fast to save his ships. You have to act fast to get your gear before the launch. The Johnny Mecuerdo store is almost open. We are talking slate coasters that can survive a bar fight and bottle openers heavy enough to anchor a galleon. Don't wait for the enemy to take your prize. Go to JohnnyMecuerdo.com. Sign up for the alert. Or find us on Facebook. Act rápido. The ships are waiting. Recuerda el legado. (Remember the legacy).
Alright, let’s thaw out. Your job inside that box is simple: Kill the Empty Slots.
Here is your Solo Quest for this week. It’s called "The 2-Deep Rule." Next time you do a cooler walk, don't just look at the front bottle. Reach in. If there aren't at least two bottles behind the face, it counts as empty. Pull them forward. Make the wall solid. If a customer grabs one, the shelf should still look full. That is the standard of a Legend.

And here is your Team Quest. Play "Face the Freeze." Pick one door—the Energy Door. Time yourself against the other clerk. Who can "Face" the entire door perfectly (labels out, no gaps) the fastest? Loser stocks the water pallets.
The cold only bothers you if you aren't moving fast enough. Build the wall. Kill the gaps. I’m Mike Hernandez. Stop freezing. Start squeezing (the sales). I’ll see you in the vault. C-Store Legends is a Sink or Swim Production.
