Mike and I really are into getting our stuff together and ready to go out in the woods, and we try to be prepared as we can. I know with my grandson or grandsons, I'm always trying to, hey, do you have this, you have this, you got this, especially when we're going out turkey hunting or bird hunting. What do you have in your vest? What kind of things you got? Are you prepared? And half the time they are not, of course, but they're young, they don't know. Yeah, you kind of have to, you know, help them understand the importance of, you know, once you leave the house, the thing you don't want to do is have to turn around, come back.

times, you know, daylight, you need to get in the woods quickly, so today we want to kind of talk about, you know, what's in your vest. What do you have, especially getting ready to go turkey hunting, or or any kind of bird hunting this spring? What do you have in your vest, Mike?

Well, you know that it's kind of like that commercial, what's in your wallet, you know, that's why I put it, what's in your turkey vest, you know, and, and I know a lot of guys are starting out, and this is simple stuff, you know, but, but it's important to talk about, so that you're prepared, you know, for anything when you're out in the woods, and one of the first things I do, though, that I think is important, especially, I don't know, it's in all areas, but around here in Pennsylvania, the southeast Pennsylvania,

I spray down all of my outer stuff, the vest, my outer clothes, really. Yep, spray them down with, with turkey, I mean, with tick spray, you know, the, the, what

it called? Well, it's one of those kind that don't, not only do they, you know, repel them, but they kill them, you know. I don't want ticks on me, you know. And so it's, you can spray it down on tents, but you got, you can't do it on your body, you do it on your clothes, you let them, you hang them out,

it. Yeah, it's got something pretty powerful. So, but it works great. A lot of people use it for tents and stuff like that, sleeping bags, and you know, but that's first thing I do with, with, with, make sure that vest, because that's going to be on my outer, you know, outside is covered, you know, with that spray, and it's, and that will last a season, you know, you spray it one time and you're good, okay, so what do I have, my vest, well, of course, I have my calls, you know. We talked about that a couple of weeks ago, about the, you know, the calls, and I like to have, I like to mix things up, you know, like you do with fishing, fishing lures, you know, you don't use this one lure all the time, you know, and you have different lures for different types of fish and situations, and color the water temperature, all of that.

Yeah, we talked to Tom Nelson not long ago, the master bow hunter, and he said he has - he takes a full arsenal of calls, he does, and he uses - he says he uses them all.

And then I have the, you know, the glass call, and the slate call, and they're, you know, they're softer, and, and, but they just look, they sound like a different hen, you know,

you know, and just to keep them more interested, if they're, if they're looking around, and maybe they don't even see the decoy, a lot of times there's, there's, you know, deadfall and stuff in the way, I had that happen one time, all like I could barely.. I knew they couldn't see my decoys, and I'm wondering, are they going to come in? Are they going to commit? They don't see the decoys, and ended up shooting, shooting one, you know, just as he passed out, because I didn't think, you know, they were going to stick around much longer, but.. but anyway. The calls you got to have your calls, so I like to take a lot of different ones. Another one I take, too, which we talked about when we talked about calls, is the fight and purse. That's like two calls, and they sound just like, you know, two gobblers going at it, and that's my desperation call, really. If I got them hung up somewhere and they're just not coming in, I will go crazy with that. That per and it's brought them in. I haven't had to use that too much, but I had one time where it really brought them in, and I'm beating the ground, man. You do all kind, you make all kind of noise, which is kind of weird, but it's your last desperation type. Try to get them in. Of course, you got to bring your chalk, you know. You got to have chalk, because you really do need that. That box call has got to be chalked up, you know, pretty regularly. Or you just sound like it's funny. I notice when my turkey yelp is starting to sound too much like the geese in the area. I know I got a chalk, that's what you got to do. Oh yeah, also carry another call. I carry is a gobbler. I don't use it much

and it makes a sound look sounds just like a gobbler, and it's pretty loud, but, but that I only use very, you know, rare, because, especially in Pennsylvania, I don't know, you just, it's a dangerous thing to do, you know, you got to be careful, yeah, sandpaper, you got to have it for your slate calls and your glass calls, you know, sandpaper to get them ready, you know, scrape them up a little bit, then I have my locator calls, because when I, when I'm walking through the woods, or especially, even at, well, when I'm walking, we try to roost them in the morning, you know, in the evening before, if you can, so you have I have a crow call, and I have a hoot owl call, you know, and the crow call, I could even use almost like a screech owl, which seems to work the best, like really loud crow call that that you can do it almost like who cooks for you, like a hoot ow call, but it's real screechy and it makes a high pitch crow sound, it's very loud and it was shot gobble him a lot of times, and when I'm running and gunning, you know, when I had to set up, it didn't work out, or whatever. Now I got to go find them, I got to locate them. I'll go walk 100 yards, or whatever, and then I'll, I'll put out some more calls, but you got to have, I like to use a locator call, because that doesn't sometimes use a Yelp, they're going to be on you before you know it, you don't have time to set up

So that's very handy. I also take this little, it's kind of neat. I found that it's an orange cover for my hat, all right, and it's got like an elastic band around the bottom, but it's blaze orange because you know more people get shot in turkey hunting than any other season out there. It's, it's just, it's amazing when you look at how many people get shot because you're on the ground, you got turkey colors on, and you're making turkey sounds,

it's crazy. And so, especially when you're moving, you know, you want to have some orange on, and I think that's real important. Also, in my vest, I have some strips of orange that I can pull out in the back while I'm walking, and just to be safe, all right. Another thing in my, what's in your vest is a some ear plugs, you know, I've already got ringing, that's incredible, but I had these little ear plugs, they're very small, they have a little attachment that you can put them right around your neck, really, if you want, and just, you know, you don't want to put them in your ear until you think you got one coming in, where you're going to shoot, but you got to be careful with that movement, but, but, yeah, if you're using a big 12 gage shotgun, and that, that's loud on your ears. I also carry some snips and an actual little limb saw, you know, a little little hoy, man, you know, limb saw. It's, it's smaller, but it has those real sharp teeth on it, you know. And you could cut down a two inch tree if you want, real quick, you know. But that's the snipper, just cutting the little things, you might have one little. Free, that's in your way, where you'd like to sit, and it'd be the perfect spot, man. You got it, snip, snip, you're done. You can put, you know, sit down right there.

Yeah, I do. I do have, I use a separate face cover, you know, so I keep that in the, and I actually put it on as soon as I go out, and I put it on my neck, and then I pull it up, so that's always in the vest, and I have my I use, like, a you know, wool gloves, you know, if it's not too warm with the fingers cut out of the right hand, you know, and and they're like a solid green, but whatever gloves you like to wear, you know, sometimes when it's real hot, because sometimes it can be real hot, beginning of May, those kind that are like mesh, almost. You can see through them, but they're still camo, you know. I always have a pocket knife, never know when you'll want to, a small one, real small pocket knife. Binoculars always have binoculars, you know. You want to be able to see them if they're coming from far away. Say, what's what's that? Come and see black, and it's amazing how you know, those I have had Turkey pick me off at a couple 100 yards,

You know, it's better that you get see them before they see you, for sure. So, the binoculars can work out great, flashlight, and I also have a lamp, like a headlamp, that I wear when I go in. I usually have it on green light, you know, because you don't know exactly what. Sometimes, if you roosted them, you know where they are, but if you didn't, you want to set up somewhere.

What's funny, my grandson just told me the other week, Pappy, can you turn down your light? It's too bright. We're gonna scare the turkeys away, right? This 14 year old tell him 66 Sorry, I'm just so used to deer hunting, I use a high, the highest beam on my head lamp going in. Yeah, maybe I shouldn't do that either. But anyway, Pappy, could you just kind of cut it down? Look, yeah. How about that? 48 Yes,

sir. Yeah, the those lights are there, and they have the green and or the red, you can use, which usually don't bother, you know. I've noticed it when I have the white one on that it affect them, but I can look right at them with the green or the red, and they don't move or nothing. You can still see their eyes, you know, like the deer, or I don't see turkey, but they're up in the trees. I might see their silhouette, you know, and on the limb, but, but, but, yeah, you got it. You got to walk in. You want to be safe, you know. Now, my decoys, I don't, a lot of guys do will carry it in the, in their vest.

yes. I don't have them where they can fold up good enough, so I actually use another, you know, bag that you know has like, you know, you know, almost like a backpack, but it's a real light bag, and I'll use, I usually only take a feeding hen and a Jake, and, and I've noticed I learned a long time ago that I used to have, like, two Jakes, two hens, you know, and, and that's not smart, because a lot of times you get one gobbler coming in, if he sees two Jakes, it's almost like the gangs in the city, you know, the young guys that have gained that, you know, one gobbler is not going to take on two Jakes, and, and they won't, they won't commit, they won't come in, they'll stay back, and so one Jake and one feeding hen, and I usually put that feeding hand facing me, because they usually circ around in front of it, which is nice. So that's about it. Do you have anything else, Dave, that you like to take?

but got to have that. That's the most, one of the most important things. I've gone to the woods and gone, oh, I've left the gun at the truck and turn around and go back, but in all the things we're talking about, when it comes to being prepared, we always want to kind of use it in a spiritual sense, because that's what the stand outdoors is all about, targeting the truth, the truth of the gospel, the truth of Jesus, and so How do we tie this into to our walk with Jesus.

Yeah, well, you know, every time I do a podcast and I prepare for it, I think about the lesson, of course, that how does this, what is it, what's the spiritual lesson here? And I always ask God, and I really believe that He will guide me and direct me, and what he got me focusing on, I believe more is, is that word, it's in First Peter 315 and it says, always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give and reason for the hope that you have, but do it with gentleness and respect. And we talked about this a few shows back, it was one of the verses, along with others, about calling that we've been called to share the gospel, right, but I want to emphasize more today on that word prepared, because How do you prepare yourself to be able to do this? He tells you right there, you gotta, it's not something that's just going to happen, you know. It says, "Be prepared. That's what that's what God is telling us to do through Peter here. Be prepared. Well, how do I get prepared to share the gospel? Well, what is the gospel? You got to know what it is, right? I mean, and then you think about, yeah, what is the gospel, you know? And I mean, it's, it's, you know, talked about it all over scripture in all different ways. So, how should I present it in a way where they can, without reading the whole New Testament, and figure out what it is? How can I present it in a very concise way that people can understand, and it can change their lives, you know, because you know the gospel means good news, and, and I think you know there's, there's basically four things that I always think about when I think about the gospel, is first of all we got, we got to realize that, you know, as the Bible teaches, we're dead in our trespasses and sins. You know that we have fall, fallen way short. We're all sinners. God is a holy and righteous God, and He can't have fellowship with sin. He just can't, you know. It's just.. it just doesn't.. they don't go together. And so we need to understand that first, Romans, you know what is it, Romans 623 says we've all sinned and come short of the glory of God, right, and then it's, it also says that the wages, this is the second, what, what's the payment for sin, says the payments for sin is death, that word 'death' there means neck is necross. In the Greek, it means separation, like when my blood is separated from my body, I know there's always a separation involved. And that's what happened with our relationship with God. When sin came into mankind, we were separated from God, and God did not want that. God wanted God created us to have fellowship with Him. And then the third thing I think that's important that we have to understand is that Jesus, why did Jesus come to the earth? A lot of people say, oh, he came because he wanted to show us the way, you know, how to live, he wanted to be the example, you know, that's not what he said, though. He said, "I came to die. He was called by John the Baptist, "Behold, the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world, and that's why Jesus came into the world, he became one of us, a human being, so that he could take our penalty for us. Remember, what the penalty is? Death. Well, why couldn't I take it? Like, like Dave sitting over there giving me the head, Bob, you know? Yeah, you're right, Mike. Well, I love Dave. He's a great brother. What if I went to God and said, 'Hey, God, I love Dave. I want to die for his sins. I want to take his place. I'll pay his death penalty, and God will go, 'Well, that's pretty noble of you, Mike, but we got a problem here. And I'll say, 'What? And God will say, 'You have your own sin, you're not qualified. Well, Jesus was the only man,

because he was God in the flesh, but he was the only true human that could take the penalty of death for another one, because he had no death penalty over him,

He had no sin, and that's what he came for, to die on that cross to pay for the sins of the whole world, yours, mine, everybody's. Matter of fact, every sin that will ever happen, and through human history, Jesus Christ's death on the cross paid for it, and now He offers, He defeated death, rose from the dead, sits at the right hand of the throne of God, and he offers this eternal life as a free gift that he purchased with his blood. So that brings us to the fourth element of the gospel. It can only be received by faith alone. We can't bring our stuff to God and say, "Look at how great I live for you. I deserve heaven. That had never happened. Isaiah the prophet said, "All of our good deeds are like filthy rags compared to him. You know, it won't work, no matter how good we are. I heard a guy say one time, you know, if you had two guys that were going to jump. One guy was a great broad jumper, and the other guy was nobody. He didn't know how to jump or nothing, but they were going to jump the Grand Canyon. Now that broad jumper would get a lot further than me or some other yin yang trying to do it right, but they would both die.

So the only way we can receive it is to say, Lord, I don't deserve it, but if you love me enough to do it, to die in my place, to pay my penalty that I deserve to pay, then I believe in you. I trust in you, and what you did at Calvary, that I can have eternal life and be right with God, and that that's the four elements of the gospel. And so, what you want to do is you want to prepare your own testimony. That's the greatest way to share your faith is to talk to people about what God has done for you, and to incorporate these four things that you know end into your story.

Yeah, we sit down for about a half hour, an hour, and we get our team together, and we say we want you to write your story down, and then we want you to tell it to your partner, so you're prepared, right, to tell your story,

And, and I, when I teach classes sometimes on evangelism, I'll say the one of the last classes, or you know, sessions will be, we're going to the mall, you know, and we're gonna, and we had a little survey, kind of thing, we were doing, you know, and I said, but I made sure that they understood this is not your typical thing that God wants you to do,

most people that come to the Lord, come through a friend, a co-worker, a family member, not some stranger with a survey, but what I want them to learn is how to share their story with people, and it's amazing because we would actually lead people to Christ, and how to pray with them. That's another thing that you need to learn. How do you pray with somebody? Because a lot of times we'll share the gospel, but we don't know how to take them right to that threshold where they do it, where they say, okay, I'm ready, and sometimes we're scared to ask them, but you need to, you need to say, are you ready? And

sometimes, and sometimes, because of time, and because of situations, and, oh, you can't. Sometimes the prayer is all you have time for, and sometimes that means more to people when you're talking with them. A cold call, just, "Hey, can I pray for you? I know you said your mom's in the hospital, "Can I pray for you? A lot of people say, "Oh, absolutely, I'd love for you. The other thing to remember, too, is the whole Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke, John - all full of stories. Jesus started with stories because he knew what he had to say was foolishness,

I'm here to die. Yeah, right. Okay, yeah. But he told stories, and that helped people to understand what he was trying to tell them. So, having a story is one of the most powerful things. And then these four elements that Mike talked about as well to have in your vest as you go out. Yeah,

and Romans 116 I think, is important because Paul says don't be ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to the Jew first and also to the Greek, but a lot of times we, we fall into that trap, like you said, about it sounds like foolishness to them, well, don't be ashamed of it, because it is so simple. How can salvation, having eternal life, be a simple gift and be received simply by saying thank you? How can that change eternity for me? Well, Paul says, don't be ashamed of that, because that is where the power is, it's that simple, and don't be ashamed of it, and I think a lot of times, another thing I wanted to say about preparing, I find, you know, they say you can take a horse to water, but you can't make him drink, but you know what you can do, you can salt his oats, and I think.

a lot of times people, I needed it, and so what I do to prepare myself to share the gospel is I want to have a few apologetics, like why believe the Bible. Well, I tell them, you know, the Bible was written by 40 different men who lived over 1600 years, who lived on three different continents of the world, and yet everything they wrote, not only did it never contradict each other, but it totally jived together to create one theme, the redemption of man. What are the chances of that happening with man? You know, have you ever played that game, Whisper Down the Lane? You get 10 people by the time you get to the end of the 10th birthday, it's a totally different story, but not the scriptures. I'm talking 40 different men, 1600 years, three different continents, man. That's got to make you say, "I better check this out. The other thing I did, too, that helped me a lot and helped a lot of people I've led to Christ. Look at the prophecy, and I got one little one that I'm not going to tell you about, but it's in Ezekiel, and you'll see the prophecy of Tyre. It's an amazing five point prophecy. There was five things he said about Tyre that was said hundreds of years before Tyre was destroyed, and yet to the detail about fishermen spreading their nets out to dry, you know that it would become such a desolate place, and I remember when I was searching, I got to that final little detail where he said it's going to become a place where fishermen will spread their nets out the dry, and I looked in this encyclopedia, and I looked up tire, and guess what, I saw fishermen, a picture of fishermen spreading their nets out over it, and that was written 3000 years before that encyclopedia was was put together. I said this is no ordinary book, and sometimes those little things that you can prepare yourself with will kind of like salt their oats and make them thirsty to want to know more, and that's how you can prepare yourself to be ready always to give an answer for the hope that you have.
