The MIPA workshop kicked off July 23 with Carol Thompson, an environmental journalist as the first keynote speaker. In her speech, Thompson provided advice to student journalists.

"I would say like try to partner up with someone who has some experience and learn from them. Maybe that's like doing a story together or just listening while they do interviews or asking for advice."

Students listened to that advice and took that away to improve their own programs. Sports editor Lucas Gentilia was motivated by Thompson to continue his journey in journalism.

"I would definitely say so. A lot of the things she was talking about, especially all of the great things with journalism, being able to be out in your community and talking to new people every day. It was definitely something that inspired me to continue my life with journalism."

People may ask what advice will stay with him.

"When she said at the end of every interview, she asked two questions. One of them being, 'What did I not ask you that I should of?' And, 'What else is there to know about the topics?' I feel like asking those two questions at the end of every interview will get you a whole lot more than you thought.

"I just really liked how she told her story of her career. It was very inspiring. I definitely think that I want to pursue a career in journalism. And I really liked things you talked about with the beats and just picking a specialized topic. I think I'm really gonna bring that back to my yearbook staff, implement that into our year next year."
