Walk us through your journey from. I understand you threw up in a rural area and then all the way to where you are now, your founder of of a of a startup in the Caribbean. Walk us through that path. Was it linear? Was any churning points?

So yes, I grew up in a I grew up in a rural part of Maryland, a couple of hours outside of DC and Baltimore. And it's it's it's own, its own island on its of its own. It seems like sometimes we thankfully we have a bridge that that, you know, connects us to modern life. But but yeah, I grew up on a farm.

I grew a vegetable farm. And so my, my interest in, in science really started as a young child. And by the time I was in high school, I was interning with the local University of Maryland campus and working on harmful algal blooms. And that led to me, you know, over the course of the next several years, moving back and forth between kind of the pure sciences, the biology.

I worked and did a master's of public health at Johns Hopkins and then went back into biological oceanography for my doctorate back at University of Maryland. And that culminated with a postdoc in environmental epidemiology, which there was one thing that came out of the pandemic that was a benefit for me was people finally knew what an epidemiologist was.

So, so so I did that postdoc and it was focused on really like where you might what sort of environmental conditions would give way to salmon or campylobacter infections, which tend to come from the newer sources. And, you know, the if you had a strong El Nino year, like we're coming up into right now, how that would impact it and really left that postdoc thinking, well, it's great.

This is great information. I'm so happy we know. But who is going to pay to pasteurized hundreds and thousands of tons of chicken manure that that's you know, no one's going to do that. And, you know, within the next year, I walked into my next position, which was with an engineering firm that was assigned to do exactly that.

And no one had kind of put the the two and two together yet that you could make renewable natural gas for manure, and at the same time you were pasteurized, the manure. And so I thought that was a huge win for public health. And that's how I that's how I got into renewable energy development and worked in that for about ten years.

At the same time I was I also have a wellness business in Maryland, and the two category five Hurricane Irma and Maria had hit the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, and we knew a lot of people in that region. So we ended up opening a third location of our business here and and really helping with kind of the rebuild over that period of time for really the two years after the the category five had gone through.

So I've that that had really started kind of a question in my mind of, you know, they had they had all new infrastructure, a new new electricity poles, etc. and we still didn't have power a lot. So, wow, you know, really had questions around how do we how do you know, knowing what I knew at that point about development of renewable energy projects, how can we start to create some more stability in this region and, and resiliency and create power on our own?

You know, that's not necessarily, you know, just around solar and wind, but but also utilizing waste sources. So that was how I, I ended up how I've still ended, how I'm still in the Caribbean working on those sorts of projects. And I was originally working on, you know, looking at waste and, and how we might use, you know, household waste and wastewater.

And as I was working on that, someone said, but but you're a marine biologist and there's an invasive seaweed that that needs your attention. So that's how that's how this whole thing started.

Got it. Wow. That's it's as you know, you said it's not linear, but it seems very interesting. Connected from one one from like, like studying to your startup in your old energy and then to the Caribbean. They are they all interconnected. But as you said, they're not. It was not linear. How did you manage those those transitions? Like was it exciting and was it.

Yeah. Was it hard like or maybe both. Both. Can you talk about like, you know, transitioning from like after your PhD to go work for a startup or, you know, moving all the way to the Caribbean to start again?

You know, it it was such so I, I had kind of a niche of, of academic and academic niche of oceans and human health when I was in my master's, in my PhD program and there was a very small group of people, you know, kind of in the greater academic world that were actually focusing on that. So I, I found my people.

So I knew that they were out there somewhere. But but I definitely was kind of a mystery to most of my, my academic peers about, you know, if you're if you're in the pure sciences of, you know, looking at marine science, they're going, but why are you worried about, you know, bacteria and pathogens and whether or not someone's going to get sick swimming and, you know, kind of on the same front, like I was working in public health.

And that that does tend to be a little bit more of a robust, you know, kind of worldview. But but yeah, having to, to look really kind of deep into and I had, you know, I definitely have moments where I was like, why do I have to learn physical oceanography? And now I understand which, you know, I've, I've had to go back and and apologize to my, my physical oceanography professor of thank you for for making me, you know, really, really dig in and learn because now physical oceanography is is really the driver of the bus of why we have such a sargassum issue.

So based upon how the currents of the Greater Atlantic Oscillation have changed. It's creating a differing pattern of trade winds. It's causing deep ocean phosphorus upwelling. And that is what has been just in the past six months has really been, you know, focused in on that, that deep ocean phosphorus is what is causing so many of the blooms right now of the sargassum.

You know, we had we had thoughts that there was, you know, the the Amazon plume coming into the Atlantic Ocean, the golf plume coming into the Atlantic Ocean, and just higher sea surface temperatures, which all, of course, you know, do do encourage it to grow. But but when we control for those, you know, in, in modeling, it's this deep ocean phosphorus which I, you know, I, I had I luckily ran into on a walk, I ran into my old physical oceanography professor and I said, well, here, here it's come back.

So here's I've had I've had to go back and crack that textbook open and really think about that a little bit deeper. So, so yeah, it's I was very lucky to have, you know, a number of people along my journey who saw the bigger picture of why I was interested in certain things. Yeah. And, and encouraged me.

Yeah, I would never have imagined like you can use chicken vineyard to, to create energy. What were some of the like aha's or key takeaways or challenges like. Yeah. What was the story there.

So so many, so many lessons that you know in in the hard sciences we don't necessarily unless you really look for it. We don't necessarily get deep into the, the business side of, of how life is done. So I had I had this wonderful opportunity to, you know, really learn a lot about everything from financial modeling to, you know, how how it I would just start there.

So I learned a lot about, you know, we have kind of this idea of the projects that we want to bring into the world and we want to solve problems. But I learned a lot about what it takes in order to make those projects, you know, financially solvent. How do how do we how do we create things that are able to actually support themselves?

And, you know, I've learned a lot over the past decade about, you know, so I worked kind of when I, they brought me first on, I was my main position was working in regulatory and and permitting for the company. And, you know, when you had a room full of angry people, that and you had to go and explain to them, you know, what you were, what you were proposing to, you know, build in their backyard.

I was the one who got to explain that. So I did learn. I did learn a few things about, you know, how to communicate to the general public, you know, and not hopefully not stay to to deep in the science, you know, be able to cross talk across multiple tables, right, in a way, but also in a way that wasn't talking down to anybody.

Like, you know, everyone, everyone comes to the table with their own, their own background and their own life experience. But yeah, learned a lot about learned a lot about how to create and build, you know, projects that were good for the environment, good for public health, but also we're able to take care of themselves financially. Learned a lot about, you know, what, the sorts of waste.

So it was it's funny, a lot of people that get into chicken manure, I said, someday I'm not going to have to mention chicken no more. But that's not today. Don't realize that it is a commodity. You know, people, farmers pay for their chicken maneuver. And a lot, a lot of folks would come to the table. You know, they've got a great idea of how they're going to solve, you know, the excess nutrient issue and Chesapeake Bay.

And they thought they were going to get the chicken manure for free. And so, you know, from day one, you have to come to the table with a business model that supports that. You're going to pay the same amount for that chicken manure, if not maybe a little bit more, because you're not in that. You're not in that inner circle of folks who have always bought it right to be able to to, to use it for, for the renewable natural gas development.

And one of the things we learned in that process was as it went through that process, the nitrogen actually was basically it created a controlled release nitrogen source. So we were we were not. I said, we have to think about we're borrowing the manure, we're paying for it to borrow it, and then we're selling it back into into this market.

We don't use any of the nitrogen as it goes through our, our process, but we actually do reformulate it. So it's actually a better nitrogen product that has, you know, instead of, let's say, 50% of nitrogen, just just a kind of a stat, 50% of your nitrogen when you put it on the ground is either going to off gas or were run off.

If you're using a controlled release nitrogen where the plant, you know, signals, it's time for me to have my nitrogen and the nitrogen is released. You you have, you know, maybe 100% are close to it. Utility of the nitrogen, which is a really important thing for nitrogen security. Yeah. You know, we I learned I learned I learned words like nitrogen security that I hadn't thought about before.

Yeah. So so yeah. Learned and also learned. You know, I was I was part of that company kind of during what I consider. Yeah. I don't know if at least in that time period the bubble of carbon credits, you know, carbon credits kind of went for being this, this thing that maybe we were going to be able to do.

And then they became super investable. And I worked very closely with California Air Resources Board during that time on, you know, bringing a nitrous oxide pathway to their low carbon fuel standard. And, you know, kind of multiple layers of things going on with different, you know, global markets. The pandemic happened and those carbon credits were not as was not as much of a of a thing as we thought they were going to be.

That created some problems. Yeah, yeah. So it's really made me kind of sit back and go, okay, so we have to have a bankable project that pays for itself. That doesn't it doesn't get any sort of extra additionality from carbon credits or any other other up up charges. It has to be able to, you know, if you could, if you can put it in, you know, if you could put whatever you're, you're making in, you know, 1 to 1 with something that's made with fossil fuels and you can still, you know, that's what that's what keeps a project able to move forward.

So I kind of always keep that, you know that angel on my shoulder going public health take care of public health and that and I and I and I you know, I plan the projects around that. Yeah. Yeah.

You know, what are you doing. What is the goal.

Absolutely. So so I should I will start with there is nothing to see. We are we are still because people say where can we go see it? And well, on paper it's on paper right now. But but that's that's always the first part of developing something is you have to you have to have it on paper. So I've been working for probably about the last 18 months on really developing out the, the scope of what does what can this company do.

And so, you know, we have this explosive growth of seaweed in a part of the ocean that it didn't, you know, live particularly at this abundance. You know, you might have seen it a little here, little there. But you know, there was a change in, in currents around 2010 that allowed for what we call the Sargasso Sea right off of North America, which is a giant, giant sea.

There's no land around it. It's completely captured by current. So we had a shift in wind, and they're able to show on models that, you know, it started to flow down and be introduced into the Caribbean. And and now you can watch it every year. It starts, you know, you kind of start to see the plume start off of Africa and it grows up into off the coast of Brazil, into the Caribbean, all the way around the Gulf.

And then, you know, up the the Atlantic coast right now only is that far north as kind of the middle part of Florida. But yeah. So yeah. And it's because it wasn't meant to be there in this volume, which, you know, last year we had kind of our first it doubled in volume last year in the open ocean.

It went from, you know, kind of ten and 15, 20 million tons I think in 2022. Right. Last year it was 40 million tons. And we're heading into that region again this year. And what happens is, you know, let's say 10% of that is washing onto beaches in the Caribbean, along Mexico, up, up through Florida. And as soon as it hits the the beaches, it starts to decompose and causes a lot of issues.

It causes issues ecologically. It causes issues for public health. You know, it starts to decompose. It releases hydrogen sulfide and ammonia gases, which, you know, an intense burst can, you know, be deadly. Luckily, we're not seeing that kind that, you know, concentration of those gases right now. But, you know, folks that live on island and they're experiencing it, you know, at a chronic level of a lower level, it's it's causing causing health issues.

So my company is focusing on how can we how can we intercept the sargassum at, at sea before it gets into, into, onto the islands? A lot of the cleanup that's done right now is done. You know, it's done from shoreline. So how do we how do we collect it before it comes into shore? And how can we process it before it comes in to shore?

So we're working on a maritime approach where, you know, we'll we'll harvest it and then we'll have a ship that's there that can kind of marry together a number of technologies that are being currently used right now. So there's, you know, we can. Well, first of all, when it's on the open ocean, it starts to collect heavy metals.

So arsenic is a is a concern. So we have to be careful with that because we don't want to just, you know, bring arsenic heavy seaweed and then put it on crops and that sort of thing. We've started to learn from that. So we do a first step where we extract that arsenic, and then we do another step where we extract the bio stimulants in the plant, which are all of the things that make it thrive out in the ocean.

Yeah. Luckily, all of those things that help it thrive can also help terrestrial plants. So, you know, we can use those same bio stimulants for heat stress plants and drought stress plants. So it's actually a really great, amazing, you know, kind of silver lining that we can create more sustainable agriculture through that. And then we do another extraction where we're pulling basically the, the, the beginnings of materials.

So the beginnings of plastic bioplastics, the beginnings of there's all sorts of like incredible antioxidants. And they're companies that are pulling, you know, these materials out for skin care. And, and then whatever's left over, which we expect about 50% of that biomass to be left over, we use as. And once you start to get into this area, then you start calling it a feedstock, okay?

If you're if you're making something with it, it's a feedstock. So when we get to 50% of that feedstock leftover, we can put it through effectively a large pressure cooker and make all from it. And that will once it's been, you know, kind of upgraded to, you know, being a diesel quality. Right. When I should say it's diesel quality, but it burns about 70% cleaner.

We can use that and we can. We're actually talking with folks that are developers of microgrids in that region. So you might have, you know, you might have a resort that's mostly powered by solar, maybe a turbine or a wind, but you'll always have a generator there because you know that it's not. The sun's not all out all day.

And so if you're able to meet the generator needs with this renewable diesel, you can have 100% renewable grids, which is not something that's being done right yet. So I'm very excited about like how we could be part of that energy, that piece of the energy transition. Yeah.

That's really exciting. There's like so many products that you just listed that can be produced from the seed plus the health benefits. And I'm linking back to what you had, sort of like after the hurricanes, there was not enough electricity or consistent electricity on the island. Now with these, you know, the ability to run these micro microgrids more cleanly, it hopefully it solves some of that issue to where there's an inconsistent electricity.

So yeah, it's is amazing. So where where are you. Oh I'm gonna base the ship now. But there are you in in the development of the company. You know, if you had a wish list. What? What are you looking for?

So right now we're we're currently in the fundraise of of, you know, first of all fundraising pilots, which for us because so many of the pieces that we're that I'm pulling together and really focusing on that have been done before, it's not that we're having to go out and recreate, you know, create something brand new. We have to just, you know, figure out exactly what does this look like, you know, as, you know, kind of in everything as a box, you know, box A sits next to box, be a box.

See, you know, what does that look like when they all sit together and we're, you know, continuously moving the product from one to the next. So our first, you know, what we're fundraising for right now and what we're working on right now is to run this first pretty large scale pilot, you know, looking to process maybe like 1 to 2 tons a day, which is effectively for sargassum is like a the back of a pickup truck.

Okay. So and then from there we'll be able to really dial in, you know, again, things that I didn't learn in in oceanography school mass balance, but an engineering term we'll be able to go in and understand exactly, you know, how much of the product we will expect, you know, after the first extraction, the second extraction, so that we can properly work with an engineering company to design the ship and to say, you know, this is the size of the equipment that we're going to have to house on the shift.

Here's the size of the ship. We know that, you know, we need to be in, you know, x feet of of water deep. And from there, you know, we can design, design the ship. And that that will be a that will be a different scale of, of, of fundraising. But yes. So this is, this is the first, the first side of that.

But really hoping, you know, in the next year we'll be able to collect that data and, and have that first kind of tranche of cash to, to get that work done. We're definitely working right now across different regions. So we're having conversations with different municipalities and South Florida who are seeing seeing that we are definitely in another major year.

Also, talking with some of our partners lower down in the eastern Caribbean islands of Saint Lucia. And and, you know, it's very exciting. It's there. They're definitely seeing seeing the issues starting again this year. Like this used to be like a maybe a six month season. And last year I think we had two months off kind of off before, you know, from the last seaweed we saw landing when the first, the first seaweed started again.

So yeah, we may not see as much seasonality with it as we once, but that's why we're I'm I'm very focused on how fast can we do this. You know, we don't if we're not choosing brand new technologies we can move faster. Right. So.

I mean, we've we've luckily attracted some really, really incredible folks to the team who are, you know, have worked in this to date. You know, I think I think it's always important to I certainly don't want to be that person who comes in and says, well, I've got the, you know, the solution for this and, you know, out of my way.

So, you know, so definitely, definitely wanting to make sure that we're partnering with the communities that we're that we're, you know, hopefully working with, you know, that could be anything from, you know, and this this also comes from kind of my, my childhood and my of growing up in a coastal area. The fishermen in that area know their waters far better than any, any scholar will ever know them.

So I would much rather, you know, come in with an idea, but then work, work side by side with the fishermen in that region because they'll know, like we have a strong current that comes this way. We've got a rocky bottom over here, you know. Right. They know their they know their territories. So, you know, first it's, you know, how can we how can we utilize and work with the local knowledge base that's there?

And, you know, particularly if they're having to step back from, you know, their fisheries right now because they're not able to get their boats out or what have you. Like, how can we, you know, how can we bring something to the economy in that in that regard to keep folks working? Another another thing that, you know, we've really we haven't shied away from is, you know, there's definitely some of these technologies like the like my big pressure cooker.

Right. It needs engineers. It needs engineers with with, you know, really, really solid expertise, which I, I will not be operating those machines. I will be bringing folks in to do it. But, you know, particularly in the, in the islands, there are only so many jobs and most of the jobs, you know, kind of hover around tourism. And there are a lot of incredibly smart folks who leave Island, go at go to college, go to graduate school, and, you know, end up, you know, getting starting careers in in things that they're incredibly good at, but they can't go home because there aren't jobs to match.

So that's, you know, something I've not shied away from is let's bring some technical jobs back to this area so that folks can go home and, you know, and have, you know, well-paying jobs that that use their, you know, their skills and and, you know, I think that I, I experience that even in the region where I grew up, you know, there's you're a couple of, you know, you're a couple of hours outside of major cities and there's just not the there's not the sort of skill set needed for every day.
