What is AppleInsider Daily?

Apple is more than just the iPhone manufacturer. This $2 trillion company's decisions impact many facets of technology, financials, and everyday life. When the company is rumored to be getting into something new, the entire world pays attention. And since 1997, AppleInsider has been covering this fascinating electronics maker from every possible angle. From details of the next-generation iPhone and MacBook to key indicators expected to drive the company’s stock price, AppleInsider Daily has you completely covered on a daily basis.

Welcome to the AppleInsider Daily for Wednesday, January 25, 2023

Following yesterday's news that the new MacBook Pro models have faster write speeds to their SSD storage drives, today the news is that the new Mac mini -- does not.

Or at least the lower capacity ones don't.

There is a reason, though. A teardown of the latest Mac mini shows that in the 256GB version, the smallest capacity available, all 256GB are housed on a single chip. Last year the same capacity was held over two SSD chips, and that speeds up writing to each SSD.

It appears the same is unfortunately also true with the new MacBook Pro models, if you buy the lower capacity ones. Higher storage capacities, as tested yesterday, are faster, but lower ones show a similar slow down to the Mac mini -- and for the same reasons.

While those much-awaited new Mac mini and MacBook Pro models are still working their way to early buyers, Apple is still working on some much-awaited software. The greatly improved HomeKit software that came out last year and was then very shortly afterwards removed again, is reportedly coming back out to play very soon.

There's been no announcement from Apple, but code within the latest releases of iOS show references to a second version of this new HomeKit architecture.

It's also in code fragments like this that we've recently seen yet more references to the still delayed Apple Music Classical -- so while it's evidence that Apple is working on HomeKit, there's no way to determine when it will come.

Whereas Malaysia has just had a very big clue that it's going to get its first-ever Apple Store. Apple is recruiting for store managers, technical specialists, support staff, and more. It's still possible that the recruitment is for third-party stores, but it appears more likely that the jobs are to be in an as-yet unannounced Apple Store Malaysia.

There's also no concrete indication of when such an Apple Store may open, but it's probably time for unions to start work.

In the meantime, Apple TV+ has continued its announcements of new shows, today launching eleven children's series that will start streaming between now and May. They include the return of old favourites like "Harriet the Spy," and "Stillwater," plus a new live-action drama inspired by Dr Jane Goodall.

So there's television to watch, a new store to watch out for, and slower SSD speeds to also watch out for.
