The Good Builder Podcast

No guest this week, it's just Az...On Friday 30 October we held the first ever Good Builder Fishing Classic at Bli Bli Barra Park, and the turnout was way bigger than we expected for our first go.

Here at The Good Builder we like to do things a bit differently. No stuffy function room, no tux or gown. Just a hat, some sunscreen, a rod in your hand and some of Australia's best builders out in the sun, because that's where the real conversations happen.

In this episode I run through the big catches, the winners and the sponsors who backed us on day one with no track record:
  • Biggest Barra: Jordy from J3 Built
  • Champ Angler: Scott Cragg, Stroud Homes
  • Perpetual Shield: Team Casa Ceramica
  • Fish Whisperer: John Leonardis, Metricon (57cm mangrove jack)
  • First Catch: Alex from James Marsden Builders, who took home a Paslode nail gun
  • Oddest Catch: Linn Batey, Nyblad Constructions (yes, a bird)
  • Total Legend Award: Steve from Stroud Homes' young fella
A big thanks to our spodosrs Future Build, iBuildNew, Halcol Energy, Casa Ceramica, TFH, HazardCo, James Hardie, Jirsch Sutherland,  Paslode, Build Launch the drinks sponsor and the food truck. We're taking it on tour around Australia.

What is The Good Builder Podcast?

This week in home building news! Catch up with Az and a colourful array of guests, to hear about who's killing it, who's innovating, and who's getting into strife in the world of new home construction.

Az (00:53)
Well, good morning and welcome back to the Good Builder Podcast. No guest today. It's just me because I'm going to talk about what happened on Friday, the thirtieth of October. It was the inaugural Good Builder Fishing Classic out at Bli Bli Barra Park with some of Queensland's best builders and Australia's best builders, actually. Everyone with their rod in hand. And I tell you what, it was a

Massive turnout and way more than we expected for our first go at it, which was really, really cool. Now here at The Good Builder, we like to do things a bit differently, and that is completely on purpose. We know all you guys and girls out there spend all week flat out on the site, on the phone, chasing trades, keeping clients happy. And the last thing you want to do is another stuffy event in a function room where you got to get all dressed up and things like that.

So we thought, why not get everyone outdoors, soak up a bit of vitamin D, put it right in their hand, and just let people be people for a day. There was no need to fork out for a tux or a gown. Just bring a hat and some sunscreen because that's where the real conversations happen and that's how you actually get to know someone. And that's what really the Good Builder is about, bringing the industry together and bringing good people together and backing the good people in it.

So let's talk fish because a few crews really caught big on the day with creation homes with some huge catches. Future build crew, the same story. And then you got Metricon. Turns out they're not just Australia's biggest builder, they can actually fish too. John Leonardis bought in a 57 centimeter mangrove jack, and Sam Gribble landed a barra somewhere around 80 centimetres. And you know what?

That still wasn't big enough to win the biggest barra award of the day. So more on all that in a sec.

And mine, let's just say that I didn't even get on the scoreboard. Now, before I get into the winners, I want to give a massive shout out to all the businesses that made this happen. First of all, to Future Build, national media, one of our partners there. Thank you for jumping on board. I build new. It was great to see all you fellas there. Mike, Aaron Bird, Jake. It was really cool to see you guys. Halcol Energy.

Casa Ceramica, congratulations, because we're going to talk about what you won in a sec. TFH, it was awesome to see you, Louise, and the crew there. HazardCo Carrick, saw you catch a fish, mate. That was pretty cool. Jerse Sutherland, thank you very much for your support. James Hardie Mark and Stefan, very cool to see you guys there. And everyone was really appreciative of you taking them through what James Hardy does. Build launch. Thank you for the drinks.

Haslo, thank you for the prizes. And every team out there had a sponsor's name on the t shirt, which was pretty cool as well.

This is the other thing that we thought was really cool about our partners who partnered with us on this event. They put their hand up for the first time for this event. It's the first time it's ever sort of happened. And if you have a look around, not many in the industry have done a bit of a fishing classic. So there was no track record, no guarantee that anyone was gonna even show up. They backed it and they got to come and mingle with some of Australia's best builders. So thank you very much for that. All right.

Now to the winners, the biggest barra award. This one was a bit controversial because while I was awarding this award, Ash North and Ellie from Future Build Events were actually catching the biggest barra. But anyway, the biggest barra award went to Jordy from J3 Built, Well Fish Mate. The champ angler went to Scott Cragg from Stroud Holmes, the national franchise manager. He caught about an eight centimeter whitting

The perpetual shield goes to Team Casa Ceramica. Well done to them. They fished as a team. It was very, very cool. We're gonna get engraved your names on the shield. It's gonna be on there forever and we're gonna drop it back off. The Fish Whisperer Award went to John Leonardis from Metricon, everyone's home side of Metricon. He got a fifty seven centimeter mangrove jack, which was awesome. The first catch award went to a young apprentice who won a great

Paslode Nightwolf Nail Gun and that was Alex from James Marsden Builders. And then we had a few other great awards, including the Oddest Catch, which went to Linn Batey from Nyblad Constructions, who caught a freaking bird. You deserve that one. And then we had a few notables that we want to give a shout out to. Rick Rubin from Bold Living, senior estimator there, mate. Well done. I watched you catch a very cool barra.

And then there was Sophie and Alexandra from AUSBUILD who were on the middle of an island while everyone was not catching. I think they were one of the first to catch, and they pulled in a massive baramundi. So that was really cool. I think what sums up the whole day is while we had all the awards and all that sort of thing, it was really cool when we were giving out the last award and I asked who should this go to, and everyone was kind of shouting out.

To give it to the youngest fisherman who was Steve from Stroud Home's Son, who just got the Total Legend Award and he got a nail gun worth about a grand and he was about six years old. So I'm not too sure if he's gonna use it, but I'm sure his dad is, and he was very happy. You couldn't get the smile off his face, and that was what the whole day was about. So that was really cool. There were so many great connections made on Friday, so many laughs.

we've got to have a big shout out to the food truck because they were serving up the goods all day and there was so much feedback around the whole day that we're gonna take this on tour and do it around Australia and have a look at other ways we can build events to bring more connection and the people of the Good Builder community together. So everyone out there, thank you very much to our sponsors

to everyone out there. Thank you very much to Steve's young fella. You're a total legend. I reckon you outfished a lot of us. If you missed it and you want to relive it, jump on our socials because we're gonna have heaps of pics from the day and videos and keep an eye out because we're gonna have articles all around it announcing the winners and things like that. That's it from me. I thought I'd keep it nice and easy for this Monday, tell you about what happened at the fishing classic and let you know that we'll be dropping more events like this around Australia.

And it was great to see everyone there. And once again, thank you for everyone who came along and supported. Now we've got some more big podcasts for the week. On Wednesday, we're gonna drop Jack from James Marsden Builders, which is really cool. He was actually at the event and his apprentice was the guy that won the first fish of the day. And then on Friday, we got a boomer of a podcast with Evan LaMotta from the La Motta group.

He's got a massive following. You guys out there would probably know him, but we had a great chat about that. how he runs his business, why he does what he does, and his plans for the future, which was pretty cool. So stay tuned for those. Have a good day. Don't forget to like and subscribe. And if you know someone in the construction industry, send it along because I hope they can get some value from this and come to our next event. All right, thank you.
