Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a pointed message to Cubans on Cuba’s Independence Day, promising U.S. support while bypassing the island’s communist leadership. In a video address, Rubio announced, “We are offering $100 million in food and medicine for you, the people,” adding that aid must be distributed “by the Catholic Church or other trusted charitable groups,” not the government. He rejected Havana’s claims that U.S. policy is to blame for the crisis, saying Cubans endure “22 hours a day without electricity” not because of an American oil blockade, but because the ruling elite prioritizes its own interests. Rubio also drew a sharp line against GAESA, saying President Donald Trump wants “a new avenue” with “the Cuban people, not with GAESA,” and called for a “new Cuba” with free expression, free enterprise, and real elections.

Bunni Pounds says a nationwide Bible-reading marathon is striking a chord far beyond its organizers, with “millions” tuning in to the “America Reads the Bible” event as the country grapples with what she described as chaos, violence and spiritual confusion. Speaking about the effort tied to the broader America250 movement, Pounds said the message that emerged was simple: “the Bible is enough.” The event, centered on reading Scripture publicly and continuously, is being framed as a spiritual reset and a sign of revival, with supporters hoping it inspires repentance, unity and renewed faith across the nation. Reporter Billy Hallowell notes the movement’s growing visibility as organizers cast it not just as a celebration of America’s heritage, but as a call to return to biblical truth at a moment of deep national uncertainty.

Authorities in Greenville County, South Carolina, have arrested 45-year-old Tyler McGatha, the former director of Covenant Christian Academy in Greer, accusing her of stealing more than $10,000 and selling guaranteed student enrollment for cash. Investigators say McGatha manipulated payroll records from January 2019 through August 2025 by crediting part-time employees with hours they did not work, leading to overpayments, and also allegedly used a church credit card for personal purchases. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office charged her with breach of trust greater than $10,000; she was later released on a $10,000 bond. In a joint statement, Covenant Church and Covenant Christian Academy said they were “heartbroken by the breach of financial trust,” adding they remain committed to “integrity, accountability, and the continued mission” of the church and school.

**A major new Wheatley Institute report says religious involvement is** linked to better mental health by nearly a 10-to-1 margin. Drawing on more than 1,000 high-quality medical and social science studies from the Oxford University Press *Handbook of Religion and Health*, researchers found 961 positive associations compared with 101 negative ones. Lead author Loren D. Marks said, “Across the mental health domains we examined, the best available science indicates that religious beliefs, practices and participation in faith communities are most often linked to improved mental health outcomes.” Among the findings: 74% of 247 studies on depression showed better outcomes for more religious individuals, while 89% of 76 suicide studies found lower rates among them. The report adds, “It is not nominal affiliation but committed religious involvement that appears to matter most,” especially weekly attendance or more.

Conservative author and podcast host Allie Beth Stuckey is criticizing the rerelease of Avalon’s 1997 hit “Testify to Love,” calling the new version an “LGBTQ-affirming anthem.” On her “Relatable” podcast, Stuckey said Christians are being told “retroactively” that the song is “an anthem of queer love,” and argued, “We are not nicer than God. We don’t know better than Him.” The rerecorded track features former Avalon members Michael Passons and Melissa Greene alongside gay country artist Ty Herndon. Passons told GLAAD, “It serves as a testimony that love does not exclude,” and said he was removed from Avalon in 2003 “because of who I am.” Stuckey pushed back, saying if Scripture seems “cruel or confusing,” “the problem is not with God … it’s with us.” Current Avalon members have not commented.

A California high school track meet is fueling renewed debate over transgender athletes in girls’ sports after AB Hernandez of Jurupa Valley High School won the high jump, long jump and triple jump at the CIF Southern Section Division 3 finals, then shared first-place honors with several female competitors under a new pilot policy. The California Interscholastic Federation says the rule expands opportunities for girls by allowing them to advance and receive awards even when finishing behind a trans-identifying athlete. Hernandez’s mother, Nereyda “Nena” Hernandez, defended the policy, saying, “The Constitution protects ALL people,” and adding that America’s laws must govern “not through personal religious ideology imposed onto others.” President Donald Trump blasted the arrangement as “NOT FAIR, AND TOTALLY DEMEANING TO WOMEN AND GIRLS,” threatening to withhold federal funding if California does not comply with his executive order.

**Thousands gathered in** Karlsruhe, Germany, as Open Doors Days drew about 9,000 people for prayer and powerful testimonies about Christian persecution around the world. Among the most striking voices was North Korean pastor Jung Jik, who survived hunger, escape and forced labor, and told the crowd he believes the Kim dynasty is nearing its end and that the Korean Peninsula will one day be reunified. Speakers also included Vina, a 25-year-old Indonesian survivor of a 2021 suicide bombing at her church, and a Mexican pastor identified as Juan, who called home with an emotional message: “Germany is praying for you!” The three-day event featured prayer cards placed at a large cross, music from Outbreakband, a children’s program for 900 attendees, and a new Africa-focused support initiative announced by Open Doors Germany director Markus Rode.
