Imagine standing in the heart of Egypt, on the brink of a momentous event, as the Divine declares every firstborn in Egypt will perish. An outcry like never before will shatter the night. But why begin the Torah with laws when the first commandment, marking the new moon, appears later? It's because the Torah is not just a law book, but a narrative of a miraculous nation's journey.
Consider the paschal sacrifice, a lamb set aside before its slaughter. It wasn't just an act; it was about acquiring merit, to allow blessings to take root. The blood smeared on doorposts was a bold stance against idolatry.
Before leaving Egypt, two commandments were given: the paschal lamb and the eating of matzah. Both were preparations for redemption. The lamb had to be roasted, never eaten raw or boiled, signifying haste and urgency. This sacrifice was a testament to the night when the Divine passed over Jewish homes, sparing them from the plague.
Remember the exodus each year, not just through stories but through eating matzah for seven days. Interestingly, on the seventh day, it's not an obligation. Through this, we learn about perspectives and the nuances of memory and tradition.
On festivals, unlike Shabbat, certain labors related to food and celebration are permitted. We indulge in finer foods and attire, signifying the joy of the occasion. However, the strict prohibition against leavened bread applies across the board, a commandment that knows no boundaries.
