Essential Dynamics, that's the podcast. My name is Bryn Griffiths and I'm filling in for Reed McCollum who will be the regular host of this podcast along with Derek Hudson. How are doing?
Derek:I'm doing great, Bryn. I'm really excited about this.
Bryn:Excellent. This podcast will come at you, every every week about twenty to thirty minutes. There's no pressure. It's a podcast. But I guess the big question that a lot of people are gonna ask is what can they expect from the podcast?
Derek:Well, what I really hope that people come away with is more clarity and more calm in their lives because of the way they think about things.
Bryn:It's also not really a calm way of life right now because everything is off the norm even though we keep hearing the new normal. People are looking for a little stability. Right?
Derek:Well, the new normal isn't isn't great and there's not a lot of hope that we're gonna get to a normal normal anytime soon. You know, it's interesting because one of the parts of essential dynamics is the dynamics part. Right. Which really is just about opposing forces. And so hey, why are we surprised that life is hard Cause it's meant to be a challenge so that we can learn.
Derek:So, I have some ways to think about that that may be helpful.
Bryn:Can you give us a hint or two on what you're gonna be going after here?
Derek:Well, sure. There's actually two parts of the concept that they're easy to explain although I'm not doing a good job of it right now.
Bryn:That's alright. This is podcast one. It's the teaser anyway.
Derek:So the first thing is that I wanna kinda set out that anything that we do in life, we can put in the context of going on an adventure or a journey or even a quest. And I think we get caught up in mundane things, make them really complicated when they can actually be a lot simpler and we can live with more purpose. The second thing is that we shouldn't be surprised because there is opposition in all things. Right. I just have you know, working on a way of thinking about these things that will help.
Derek:I guess actually, Brandon started with the way I thought about business models and strategy. But what surprised me as I got into it, is it got more application to our personal lives than I ever expected.
Bryn:Do you find that people need to simplify rather than just make things too complex?
Derek:Well, you know, it's a very good point because I do believe that we make things way too complex.
Bryn:Oh,
Derek:yeah. I studied with a brilliant man named Eli Goldrat. He wrote the book The Goal which is a best selling business book in the nineties. And he talks about inherent simplicity inherent simplicity. Right.
Derek:And I think that we complexify things. Yes, do. And then and then we're frustrated because we don't know we lose track of cause and effect I guess. And when we do that, we lose our sense of agency and purpose. And I think the Essential Dynamics framework kind of lays that back out and we can kind of get grounded again.
Bryn:So really what we're trying to do here is we're trying to tune people in a little bit to their focus. Is that a good way of saying it?
Derek:You know actually that's really interesting Bryn because Doctor. Goldratt, he summed up his theory of constraints in one word and that was focus. Okay. And I'm not here to educate the population on the theory of constraints. I know a little bit about it.
Derek:There are people who know a lot more. But it fits in some of the work that I do, so I will refer to it from time to time and I think it's great stuff. And focus, that's a really good way to put it. Because there's a lot of things that we don't need to pay attention to that we pay attention to.
Bryn:Well, that's what we're gonna focus on and this is the teaser and Reed and yourself will be coming people's way very very soon here. And how long the podcast? Twenty to thirty minutes?
Derek:Twenty to thirty minutes. We want to leave you wanting more at the end of at the end of each podcast so you'll come back because there's there's always more to talk about.
Bryn:Beautiful. So, of course, the podcast is Essential Dynamics with Derek Hudson and Reed McCollum, and it's coming your way soon.
