Tricia's Rose City Framing Podcast

How to protect a photo when framing comes down to one thing most people don't realize until it's too late: the glass. In this episode I'm pulling back the curtain on UV-protective glass — what it actually protects, and why it matters more than almost any other choice you'll make when you frame something you love.

Here's the short version: regular glass lets ultraviolet light through, and over time that light fades your photo, yellows the paper, and breaks down inks and dyes you can never get back. UV-protective glass filters out the vast majority of those damaging rays, so the colors you see today are the colors you'll still see years from now. That's the whole point of framing in the first place — not just to make something pretty on the wall, but to preserve it.

I'm Tricia Pottinger, a Certified Picture Framer and the owner of Tricia's Rose City Framing here in Tyler, Texas. In this one I'll walk you through what UV glass does, where sunlight does its quiet damage even in rooms you'd never expect, and how to think about protecting a photograph, a document, or any treasure with a story behind it. No lecture — just a friendly heads-up before you need it, the way I'd tell a friend across the work table.

If you've got a photo or keepsake you want to protect the right way, I'd love to hear the story behind it. Give us a call at (903) 360-7004 or visit www.rosecityframing.com. Love you, and have a great day.

What is Tricia's Rose City Framing Podcast?

Certified picture framer in Tyler, Texas sharing the real stories behind the treasures people trust her to preserve — plus what it takes to run a small business the right way.

Welcome in, y'all. I'm Tricia from Tricia's Rose City Framing, and today I want to talk about something most folks never think about until it's too late, and that's UV-protective glass. If you've got a photo or a piece of art you love, this is the kind of thing I'd want a friend to tell you before you need it.

So here's the big question people ask me all the time. What does UV-protective glass actually protect, and why does it matter so much? The short answer is this, it protects the things you can't get back.

Let me explain what UV even means in plain language. UV stands for ultraviolet, and it's the part of light that fades, yellows, and breaks down anything you hang on a wall over time. You don't see it happening day to day, but it's working away quietly the whole time.

Think about the photographs you treasure most. A picture of your grandparents, your wedding day, your child's first steps, those colors and those faces are vulnerable to light. Regular glass does almost nothing to stop that fading, and once a photo fades, there's no bringing it back.

UV-protective glass, on the other hand, blocks a huge amount of that damaging light before it ever reaches your photo. It's not just for fine art either, it's for the ordinary, priceless things in your home. The kid's drawing, the concert ticket, the handwritten note from someone you love, all of it lasts longer behind the right glass.

Now here's the nuance a lot of people miss. UV protection isn't only about the window and direct sunlight, because fading happens even in a room that never gets a bright beam across it. Indirect light, the glow in a hallway, the lamp in the living room, all of that adds up over years.

And that's really the heart of why this matters. Framing isn't just about making something look pretty on the wall, it's about preserving it so it's still there for the next generation. When someone hands me a family treasure, I treat it like it's my own, and the glass we choose is a big part of keeping that story safe.

I'll be honest with you, this is one of those things I see go wrong again and again. People put something they love behind plain glass, hang it in a lovely spot, and years later they're heartbroken to see it's faded. You don't have to learn that lesson the hard way, and a little knowledge now saves a whole lot of regret later.

Here's what I'd love for you to take away. If it matters to you, if you'd be sad to lose it, ask about UV-protective glass before you frame it, not after. The right glass is one of the simplest ways to protect something that can never be replaced.

Every treasure that comes through my door has a story behind it, and I genuinely love hearing those stories and helping protect them. What we don't know, we'll research, and we'll figure out the very best way to keep your piece safe for years to come.

So if you've got something you love and you want to do right by it, I'd be delighted to help. You can call me at nine zero three, three six zero, seven zero zero four, or visit us online at rose city framing dot com.
