The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Wishing Quincy Jones a happy birthday to start things, and hope there are many more left in store. Two hours of new music after that with Kat Bass joining us for our final Popcast of the season!

Show Notes

As broadcast March 14, 2022 with plenty of extra candles on the podcast cake!  Tonight we wish a very heartfelt happy birthday to the producer of producers, the man in the booth, the guy that has made more music happen in his one pinky finger than most artists can achieve in many years, Quincy Jones, who turns 89 today.  Tons of new cuts to get through in both hours with Kat Bass highlighting the pop side of things in our Popcast 2nd hour.  A new album just dropped Friday from Rex Orange County and Alessia Cara, and we highlighted a massive new film score being done by Son Lux for the new "Everything Everywhere All At Once" film, the full soundtrack of which drops April 8.  New singles to upcoming stuff as well like Florence + The Machine's new album, a new LP out in June from Bobby Oroza and Big Crown Records.

It is 20 hours past midnight and we are through the rough and tumble first chapter in our labor adventures for this week, so let out a sigh sit back and enjoy the ride. Whatever kinda day you had, we are here with the audio balm, rubbed gently yet vigorously into the ouchies of spacetime as March 14, 2022. This is Danno maintaining everything for the keep on to your keepin on from studio 2 and the tower atop GFN HQ at the base of Sajik Park in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Shouts to all of you tuned in tonight you are obviously a person others want to know & adore, and it is our final new muses Monday of season 6. We start anew next week, no big changes on Monday but Tuesday & Wednesdays are certainly in for makeovers. And tonight’s season finale with Kat Bass in our 2nd hour Popcast sees lots of great new tunes just out over the weekend from the likes of Rex Orange County, Florence + The Machine, Aldous Harding and many more, so lots to do until we hit 10 bells as always, and great to have Kat Bass back after the covid scare last week, so glad she’s alright. Tonight we’ll start with some history as one of the most important men in refined audio history turns 89 today, and we’ll talk about keeping up with the Jones after we showcase his work with Mike. THIS is The Drop.
Michael Jackson – Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough
The Drop is officially bouncing around in space as we have kicked off tonight’s game of audio mirrors.
This is Danno as always as ever between 8 & 10 on GFN, thanks for joining us, you are a paragon of class and taste.
That was Michael Jackson with Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough from his iconic debut solo LP Off The Wall. Of course, this record was produced by the inimitable Quincy Jones, who turns 89 years young today. Born in Chicago on this date in 1933, the man is quite possibly the greatest producer of all time and has worked in almost every genre one can name off the top of the head. His work spans singles, albums, film scores, TV productions, and everything else. Just in the film scoring credit categore, the man has done over 500 films in his lifetime, and we hope Quincy Jones has many more years left in him.
Happy birthday, Quincy Jones and indeed, don’t stop til you get enough…and it’s never enough, let’s face it.

So moving along, it was a busy weekend of releases and albums and album announcements, so let’s get to our first trio of fresh cuts to taste test. To start it’s Rex Orange County then we got Rachel Chinouriri along with Parekh and Singh to finish, and we shall of course talk about all there is to know about after the roundabouts. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.
______
The Drop returns this evening and it is our final new muses Monday night of the season. What’s happening tonight, Drop Slops (KOR)? Danno here, studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, absolutely jazzed to have you with us for our Monday night run down of all the new tunes, and grateful that Kat Bass is back for her Popcast 2nd hour tonight after a close call with you-know-what last week. Let’s run down those last three tunes for now though as the clock doth tick away…
Rex Orange County – AMAZING (…the self-made independent Brit is out with his latest album as of Friday, and I don’t wanna step on Kat Bass’s toes too hard in hour 2, so we’ll leave further info for her to furnish then. Great story though, totally made what he is himself since his first release in 2015.)
Rachel Chinouriri – All I Ever Asked (…premiered last week on the BBC’s Hottest Record in the World, the London-based artist here was inspired by a breakup her friend was going through, which made her reflect on her own situation as well, which was strikingly similar on closer inspection. This is a standalone for now, nothing else announced.)
Parekh & Singh – Sleepyhead (…after releasing Je Suis La Pomme Rouge or I Am A Red Apple earlier this year, this would appear to be the 2nd single from their upcoming LP, although the Kolkata duo out of India have not officially announced what that is just yet, even after dropping this joint last Thursday.)
Alright, so we still got a couple more joints to let into space for here in part 1, and we’re gonna turn up the tempo a good bit with Florence + The Machine’s latest called My Love. The band as we have discussed previously will drop Dance Fever, their 5th studio album on May 13, so mark it as that’s looking pretty high on the quality. After that we’ll finish with a song called A Sleep In The Garden (disambiguate) Maia Friedman, and that’ll be it for here in part 1 this evening. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.

II
Back on the mic for this week’s New Muses Monday dustoff, our season finale here on The Drop. Danno here, excited to have you with us as always and for the new season which kicks off next Monday, and Kat Bass will be here tonight and moving forward on our new music Monday nights. We just kicked off the 2nd stanza of our radiological orchestra so let’s get to the damage readout...
Orion Sun – pressure (…the latest from the Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter is out as of Friday. The Getaway EP is kind of in line with a lot of what I’m seeing with releases right now, as far as a surrealistic escapist approach. Not to sell it short, mind you. Very good ep just out and once again that’s….)
Bobby Oroza – The Otherside (…our favorite Finnish crooner on one of our favorite soul imprints just dropped this joint over the weekend. Get On The Otherside is Bobby’s sophomore LP just announced with the release of this, and that should be another escapist gem dropping on June 10 via Big Crown Records.)
Pod, socials, etc…
So, continue to smooth it out here in part 2, and we got some real slow burners up ahead so get your shades on. Up next is a real pensive gem from Son Lux featuring Mitski and David Byrne (man, what a collab), and we’ll follow that with Aldous Harding and Father John Misty, along with the background to the foreground when the sounds die down. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
____
Approaching the halftime buzzer now on our New Muses Monday season finale, this is Danno in studio 2 GFN HQ on the new music grind. Kat Bass joins us after being absent from the studio last week due to a covid scare, and we’re mega glad she’s with us tonight and alright. As far as those last three cuts, let’s get to the infotainment…
Son Lux feat Mitski & David Byrne – This Is A Life (…this is the first release to an incredible project. Son Lux is scoring the extra ambitious 49 track soundtrack to the new A24 film Everything Everywhere All At Once, and the soundtrack arrives April 8.)
Aldous Harding – Fever (…out the Friday after this one is the latest from the NZ-based Aldous Harding. Warm Chris arrives on March 25, and after how fun 2019’s Designer was, we are very interested to hear the next chapter.)
Father John Misty – Goodbye Mr. Blue (…another bit of monolithic music that drops on April 8 is the first studio album from Father John Misty since God’s Favorite Customer in 2018. His fifth studio album is called Chloe and the Next 20th Century, and once again that is out in full about 3 weeks from now on April 8.)
Alright so the halftime break beckons but got a nice long player to bump out to the buzzer from Jazzanova called Saturday Night Special. This is the 2nd single from the BBE’s Strata Records The Sound of Detroit Reimagined by Jazzanova. Strata Records was a 1960’s label out of Detroit, and a very interesting experimental label for its time of decline in the city. The full mix drops on April 22. That’s gonna do it for the first half, we’ll see you in part 3 shortly. THIS is The Drop at the half.

Fresh Buns

Rex Orange County - WHO CARES?
03.11.2022
Rex Orange County is out with a new Album titled, WHO CARES?. The lyrics entail Rex’s feelings of self consciousness, and personal struggle someone might face when going through something, questioning “who actually cares about me or what I’m going through?”

Alessia Cara - Find My Boy
03.11.2022
Remember how she had a new album out, not too long ago? Well, SHE HAS ANOTHER. Her newest is titled, For the Love of Pop. “Find My Boy” is a chill, rhythmic track about Alessia Cara looking for a love interest, asking the universe to find her a boy that fits her preferences.

Ella Henderson - What About Us
03.11.2022
Albums are coming out left and right, even from Ella Henderson! She's blessed us with a new one titled, Everything I Didn't Say. The singer also talked a little about it: “the whole track is me in my mind just being so lost, and sometimes I can literally be my own worst enemy…”.

Wallows - At the End of the Day
03.04.2022
We got a new Single from Wallows! The song is described as “being invested in a relationship with someone and fearing it may ultimately be doomed but you just want that person to be happy no matter what”.

Megan Thee Stallion & Dua Lipa - Sweetest Pie

Part IV

Jay Park ft.IU - GANADARA
03.11.2022
Jay Park and IU Collab to make this relatable piece. The song's title "GANADARA" is a reference to the Korean alphabet. The song describes the feeling of how you don't know what to say to the one who you're interested, hence hovering over words to say.

Ailee - #MCM (Man Crush Monday)
03.07.2022
Let me just say, how convenient that it's a Monday? #MCM on full swing, Ailee served us a new album titled, I'm Lovin' Amy. It's an all English-Language Album! I suggest you take a listen to her.

Imagine Dragons - Bones
03.11.2022
“Bones” is the first single off “Mercury – Act 2”. A spirited examination of life and death, the song celebrates the spark that ignites our beings and demonstrates overcoming the struggles of the world through positive emotion.

NOTD & Nightly - About You
03.11.2022
the Two Artists explain: "'about you' is a very special song to us that marks a transition in our creative process, one that has been a long time in the making, something instantly clicked in our heads and we started working on it right away. The whole thing was basically done in a few months completely over the internet."
