Host (Melanie Y. Evans,she/her/ella):

Let's empower ourselves and each other to create a more inclusive and equitable world for our children and the people who we work with. Stay tuned. Hello. Hello, everyone, and welcome back to the Pediatric Speech Sisters Show. I am so excited to be coming back here for season 2.

Host (Melanie Y. Evans,she/her/ella):

First of all, my name is Melanie Evans. For those of you all who don't know me, I also go by pediatric speech sister on Instagram, which I'll be talking a little bit the genesis of pediatric speech sister. You could also go back to season 1 on your favorite podcast platform. So for today's episode, I really just want to introduce season 2, and I will be talking a lot about what season 2 will bring. I before we even get started, I do want to quickly shout out our sponsors, lyricaredot com.

Host (Melanie Y. Evans,she/her/ella):

Leary Care is an exclusive site for speech language pathologists and now occupational therapists. You will definitely see me on there talking about all things cultural responsiveness and everything I care about, like issues in higher education. I'm so excited about Lyricare because they have a new availability system on there. And what the CEO, Samir Rahman, told me is he wants to empower more speech pathologists to be private practice owners and to score their own contracts. And he also has so much care for the parents who might be in rural areas or might not have as much access to seeing a speech therapist.

Host (Melanie Y. Evans,she/her/ella):

And so what that availability system does is the speech pathologist is able to set up their availability, almost like Calendly, but better because it's exclusive for a speech therapist. And then what the parent can do is they can search for different therapists on the Lyricare site, and they they will be able to book a consultation, to see if they even qualify for services. I think that that's really cool, and I'm so excited to be using that platform. So if you are interested, you can sign up. It is completely free.

Host (Melanie Y. Evans,she/her/ella):

Check out my affiliate code in the show notes or just go to tinyurl.com /pslearycare2. So that's tinyurl.com/pssleary care, the number 2, and then, again, I will put that in the show notes. So let's go. Let's get into today's episode. So I do have my notes here because for those who have been with me for a while, I am neurodivergent, so I might get off on a topic.

Host (Melanie Y. Evans,she/her/ella):

And so I'm like, let me just keep y'all organized and just give you a whole a little bit of a recap about where I've been. I definitely did drop off, I think, in February. I had some episodes about Black History Month, and I'll just be completely transparent with you all. I had a whole series planned for you for Black History Month, but life got in the way as it does for everyone. Right?

Host (Melanie Y. Evans,she/her/ella):

And, also, I have a separate brand called Praxis Speech Sister, and that is a DBA as passing the SLP practice exam, and so I've just been really honed in on it. I'm multifaceted and so and like I told y'all, I have ADHD, so it's easy for my hands to be in different pots. My friend, Alice, Alice, actually, was just like, you're like an octopus. Like, you're all over the place In the best way, like, I think it's a gift. And, also, I'm like, you know what?

Host (Melanie Y. Evans,she/her/ella):

If I really want this brand to thrive and if I really want to reach as many people, I'm going to have to spend a season just pouring into the Praxis Beach Sister Instagram page and business. And so that's exactly what I did. And then I had a meeting with my CEO, IE God, and God told me that it is time to come back to the pediatric speech sister platform. So I'm so thankful that you all have stuck through it and still hung out with me. And for all the newcomers, welcome.

Host (Melanie Y. Evans,she/her/ella):

Welcome. I'm so glad you're here because we are about to get a little bit more provocative than the last season. So the last season of the Pediatric Speech sisters show was we introduced it with the Kwanzaa series where I talked about the 7 principles of Kwanzaa and how speech pathologists can also celebrate the seven principles of Kwanzaa. We talked about faith, we talked about unity, we talked about group economics, and so forth. So, again, go ahead and look at the podcast episode, not YouTube because I'm on YouTube right now filming this, but on the podcast episode to check out those episodes.

Host (Melanie Y. Evans,she/her/ella):

I also did I'm gonna go ahead and look at my notes. I also did introduce the pediatric speech sister live, which is so fun because I got to introduce a lot of different industry leaders like Jenna Casbon and Ebony Green and people from the deaf and hard of hearing community like David Player and @ItsCharmay, which I'll actually be bringing on, the podcast for this season. And so that has just been such a huge passion of mine. And so we will, of course, continue to have guest conversations. I want to have more guest conversations with people from outside of the industry.

Host (Melanie Y. Evans,she/her/ella):

So, yes, we'll be talking about speech language pathology, but I also want to introduce how our role as speech language pathologist also plays into the role of entertainers and plays into the roles of people in the spirituality space because I am a coach as well. I'm a spirituality coach, so, I'll be I'll get to incorporate a lot of those principles into our episodes here. I also wanna introduce more educators and more people from the finance industry. I just want us all to thrive, and my biggest overarching mission is for us to close academic achievement gaps, but then it since expanded to closing achievement gaps in society. So one way that we'll be doing this is I'll also be talking about social justice issues.

Host (Melanie Y. Evans,she/her/ella):

So I've been very blessed to have the opportunity to be a cultural responsiveness instructor for undergrad students studying speech language pathology and I've been able to introduce topics that not only include different dialects, but also topics like linguistic racism and human rights and social justice and everything that we're supposed to be learning, but we don't really learn in speech language pathology. And so I am very excited to be sharing this with our community because I also understand, especially after teaching this cohort of undergraduate students, the k through 12 system, and you might I'm in Oklahoma at the moment filming this. So the k through 12 system has definitely failed us on educating us with multicultural history and everything, and that is so necessary to understand when we were when we're interacting with diverse groups because we have to know where they're coming from. We have to know their different traumas that they might be going through. They might be we have to know the history of their communication styles if we really wanna be advocates for them in in this space, in the education and health care space.

Host (Melanie Y. Evans,she/her/ella):

So I am so thrilled to be coming back on the show. This is like my baby. I've definitely missed you all, and I've definitely missed having conversations with you all. So be prepared for a mixture of more solo episodes and more podcast guests where we can just learn more ways so that we could be culturally responsive in our communities and our day to day lives. Alright y'all, come back every week and I'll see you then.

Host (Melanie Y. Evans,she/her/ella):

Bye fam.
