The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

As broadcast October 25, 2023 with a boatload of fierce, hard-earned independence in tow.  Tonight we got on the plane once again for some wonderful traveling without moving and headed for Armenia's capital Yerevan.  Much like Korea, Armenia's history has been marked heavily by interference and aggression from their its larger neighbors, but that has only hardened the Armenian people's desire for self-determination, even when it can only be over one's self.  Spread all over the world now, the connection always remains to their now wholly independent country, and we took a trip all over the audio and geographic map to track down some of the best Armenian music from down the years up to the present day.

- Annnnnnd scene. That’s about all I can find out about them. Not even sure if this group is still active, as this tune appeared on their first and only album from 2017.
Misho – Hin Enker
- This is a popular singer from Armenia who appears courtesy of the Hay Team Official label, which I think is Misho’s own imprint.
- Currently credited with 37 tunes over a 7 year career, but still mainly a local phenomenon in Armenia.
Misho – Tsar

Part 2
Garik & Sona – Lusin
- The title of this tune means “moon,” and was put out on their 2021 album Zngl, which I’m sure I butchered horribly, meaning “bell,” which I’m sure I got right.
- The group is the duo of Garik Papoyan and Sona Rubenyan, the latter of whom before they joined forces Զնգլ became the winner in 2011 of the fifth edition of Hay Superstar, which is the Armenian version of the British television hit show Pop Idol.
Gevorg Martirosyan - Harsaniqi Ore (Armenian for Wedding Day)
• an Armenian singer and actor known for his participation in music and television.

Crimesterdam – Full Power
- This is a band out of the capital city in Yerevan.
- Very much a product of their years growing up and their love of English rock, you can definitely hear moonPassion read.Oasis and Blur in their music along with almost by natural extension The Beatles.
- The band put out an album in 2011 and have been on & off hiatus for seemingly forever.
VIZA - Carnivalia
• An American rock band with a very distinct sound that comes from blending oud and percussion with more conventional rock instruments such as guitar, bass and drums.

Part 3
Lilit Hovhannisyan - Balkan Song

The Bambir Grapes of Sinai
• An The band from the Armenian city of Gyumri has been around for over 40 years, and over the course of its turbulent performance career more than 50 musicians partook in its work.
• Jag Barseghyan established the group in 1970s and its repertoire includes original tracks, traditional Armenian songs and modern interpretations of medieval folk music and compositions by Komitas. Today the sons of the band’s original members keep the rock-n-roll spirit of their fathers alive.
The Bambir – Hashish
- This band has got to be the band you send to the Music Olympics as Armenia’s representative. They represent so much of the country & its spirit. However, they might get disqualified for positive drug tests, given the subject nature of my pick in the next block.
Serj Tankian – Sky is over (whole song is English)
• The dynamic frontman of System of a Down band, is a musical force known for his distinct vocal prowess and thought-provoking lyrics that have propelled the band to international acclaim.
• Beyond his musical success, Tankian's unrelenting activism shines through, as he passionately champions social justice, environmental causes, and human rights, wielding his art as a catalyst for change.
System Of A Down – Toxicity
- Of course, our lovely travel companion took care of the important bits for me, but I would like to point out that Serj Tankian was one of the very, very few people, let alone artists, who was outspoken in criticizing the knee-jerk reaction to 9/11 even right after it happened.

Part 4
Lav Eli – I Found You in Heaven
- This is a very influential early alt rock band from Armenia formed back in 1996.
- By the late 1990’s, even though their music was not available for purchase, their frequent radio play yielded hits such as “Your Eyes”, "The Traveler's Song" and "I Found You In Heaven". Even though there still was no widespread commercial outlet to purchase their music, their popularity grew via live shows, TV appearances, and general media exposure. Citing differences of opinion, Lav Eli disbanded in 1999 in order to pursuit solo projects and other creative endeavors, but reunited in 2004.

- This is a quartet out of Seoul who release everything on their own otmsound imprint.
- Our final tune of the night is an extra smooth joint from 2019, and that’s the trademark, just extra silky rnb influenced joints with a bit of a city pop edge to it.
