You go through a number of websites, absorbing as much as you can about a topic. Before you know it, hours pass and you’re still reading article after article. The problem is: You haven’t actually done anything.
Sound familiar?
Let's be honest: building a company from nothing is incredibly hard. It has been for me. I started my entrepreneurial journey at age 8. Yep, you read that right....8! Since then, I've started, run and sold multiple businesses with no partners and no funding. All my life I've had to build something from nothing, and that's what I've gotten really great at - tenacious, creative and extremely smart strategy coupled with hard work. Welcome to The Do What Is Necessary podcast—I’m your host, Andrew Moon.
Listen in as I share all the mistakes I’ve made and, more importantly, what I’ve learned from them, with no fluff, and no rose-colored glasses. The Do What Is Necessary Podcast is a show where we cut through the toxic hustle and grind mindset and dig into what it actually takes to start and grow a “calm business”. Calm is family first. Calm is more independence. Calm is sustainable practices for the long term. Calm is joyful. Running a calm company is a choice.
I’ll be giving unfiltered advice every week, 10 minutes per episode each. I want you to walk away from this podcast with the mindset and tools you need to be successful.
This podcast is for entrepreneurs, side hustlers, and busy professionals with a short attention span (like me)—you’ll get quick-hitting, actionable information in every single episode. If you give me your time, I promise it won't be wasted. Now let's get to work!
Click click, click.
Swipe swipe, swipe.
You go through tons of websites,
watch a budgetary in YouTube videos.
Absorbing as much as you can about
a topic that you're interested in.
Before, you know, an hours pass and
you're still reading article after
article or watching video after video.
The problem is you haven't actually.
Done anything.
Sound familiar.
I used to do this for hours at a time.
I would research the crap out of a
topic, whether it was exercise writing.
Or even on how to become more productive.
But nothing would actually get done.
I would take in a lot of information,
but none of it seemed to help.
Doing an analysis of what we're
supposed to do is often a way of
making ourselves feel more productive.
It seems as if we're doing
something to reach our goals.
But there's a difference between
being busy and productive.
There's an even greater difference
between consuming and creating.
Busy means performing tasks that may
or may not produce the results while
being productive is when you take
concrete steps to achieve a goal.
Consuming information
rather than doing something.
Is a way of putting off what
we know we should be doing.
Postponing what's important.
Masks are deep rooted fears, whether they
include fear of change, fear of failure.
Or even a fear that we
may become successful.
But if you go through each of the five
steps I'm going to talk about now.
You'll find it a lot easier to start
taking steps towards what you want.
To achieve.
Step number one.
Stop obsessing over minutiae.
We're bombarded with
decisions all the time.
From the moment we wake up, we have
to decide what to wear, what to eat
and what we need to do that day.
And that's before any real work gets done.
Every day, you're faced with a
range of small to big decisions.
It's important that you
differentiate between the two
in order to set priorities.
For example, deciding
what to eat for breakfast.
That's a small decision.
But considering whether to leave
a job or to start a new business,
that's a much larger decision.
And at first it sounds obvious
that we should be putting more
energy into critical decisions that
may impact us for years to come.
But surprisingly human nature takes over.
It can be tempting to obsess over
insignificant details and choices.
Which take up a finite energy that
we have to make critical decisions.
So instead to plan ahead of time for
those smaller details of your day.
So that you have more brain
power, more bandwidth.
To clearly handle things.
When it comes to big decisions.
I eat the same thing
for breakfast every day.
So I don't have to think about it.
I generally wear the same clothes.
Yeah, I do wash them.
But that reduces the citizen fatigue.
Step two is know that things
don't have to be perfect.
And if you've listened to my podcast, You
know that I am a recovering perfectionist.
It's easy to keep yourself from
starting anything by telling yourself.
Well, it's just not the right time.
Or I just need to get this one
thing before I can start working
towards these other goals.
But the truth is now is the best
time to get started on your goals.
Things will never be perfect.
And if you keep waiting until
you're in that perfect situation.
What if that moment never arrives.
Waiting till later can mean
increased responsibilities,
whether it's finances, family.
Or whatever life decides to throw
at you like a global pandemic.
So instead of stalling and
waiting for an opportune time.
A better way to approach
your goal is to think.
What is the one small task I can do today?
That will get me closer
to what I want to achieve.
Step three is to set a deadline.
There's a difference between
urgent and important.
Sometimes what is important to
us isn't necessarily urgent.
This might include your desire to write a
book, get in shape or to start a business.
We don't feel a need to do
any of these immediately.
Because no one's pushing us to do them.
And nothing bad will happen if we decide,
Hey, I don't really feel like doing that.
Unfortunately, the nature of these things.
Makes them easy to put off to later.
Instead it created self-inflicted urgency.
Make something that is
important, urgent as well.
So that you feel compelled
to do something about it.
For example, if you're looking to get into
shape and haven't exercised in months.
Just set a simple task.
Your simple tasks could be to
stretch in front of the TV.
As you're watching YouTube tonight.
Or go for a walk by the end of the week.
The deadline should be something
close in the task should
be something simple enough.
That it's hard to make excuses.
Step number four is to
take a small step each day.
You've probably heard the
term overnight success.
You know, the people who went from
nothing to instant riches and fame
and yeah, they're all over YouTube.
It seems as if these individuals
were chosen from obscurity
to become successful.
However, what you don't see underneath is
all those years of work and dedication.
That it took to get there.
As a billionaire entrepreneur,
mark Cuban says, everyone tells you
how they're going to be special.
But few do the work to get there.
I do the work.
He didn't become successful overnight.
It took years of work.
Experimenting and failing.
In order to get where he is.
And where other successful
people are today.
And doing the work starts
with just doing one thing.
Right now.
Step number five, our last
one, when people first set
out to accomplish something.
They soon find themselves overwhelmed
with all sorts of information.
So step five is to quit over planning.
So when we overwhelm ourselves
with information, when we're
getting started, we ask ourselves,
how do I, how do I do this?
What if there's nobody
interested in my product?
What if my business fails?
Oh, it worked for him or her,
but it might not work for me.
A number of reasons, begin to pop up in
our heads about why we can't do something.
We plan ahead in our minds about all
the problems that are likely to pop up.
Before we even do anything yet.
So the first thing to keep in mind
is to stop planning everything out.
It's good to know where you're headed.
But also realize that
when obstacles do come up.
You'll deal with them when the time comes.
And I believe that success is
something you acquire gradually
each and every single day.
The more work you put into your
craft, the more you'll get out of it.
all you need is the courage to know that
the road to success is in front of you.
If you're willing to travel on it.
So my question for you.
What is keeping you from
reaching your goals?
If you have any tips that you
wanted to add to this list?
Or if there is something that's
preventing you from reaching your goals.
Please feel free to leave
those in the comments.
As always stay humble and kind
and always do what is necessary.
I'll see in the next Episode
