INTRO GOOD (DAY) EVENING MADISON! YOU’RE LISTENING TO THE 5/6 O’CLOCK NEWS UPDATE ON WSUM 91.7 FM MADISON STUDENT RADIO. I’M TALULA HAYES.

IN THE NEWS TODAY,

IN CAMPUS NEWS,
Nearly 40 arrests were made during the Mifflin Street Block Party as of 7 p.m. this Saturday. 200 officers monitored the event and crowds on Mifflin Street. Most of those arrested were charged with alcohol-related crimes or fighting. 29 people who were arrested were cited and released, however eight were taken to the Dane County jail. Four firearms were recovered at the event with two seized by police during large fights. The block party is held on the last Saturday of April each year. Students gather at houses across West Mifflin Street, with around 15,000 to 20,000 students attending this year’s gathering. Madison Police Chief John Patterson said “This is the largest crowd we have seen in the last several years,”. Students began congregating around 11 a.m. with officers shutting down the street and nearby roads around 11:30 a.m. Many students later moved to State Street, where a mass of fights broke out, with some involving underage students. One led to an officer being injured while trying to break it up where he was later brought to the hospital. Another fight led to an officer injured while monitoring downtown crowds.

IN NATIONAL NEWS,
A man was charged on Monday for his attempted assassination of Trump in the White House Correspondent’s dinner shooting. Cole Tomas Allen appeared in court for the shooting, which led to the evacuation of Trump, safety concerns for guests and cancellation of the overall event. He was taken into custody Saturday night and was charged in federal court in Washington. During the shooting, one officer was shot but was wearing a bullet proof vest; he is expected to recover. Tomas was charged with transporting a firearm and ammunition in interstate commerce and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. Tomas did not enter a plea deal. Tomas does not currently have a criminal record. Prosecutors have not revealed a motive, however he sent letters to family members just minutes before the attack. He repeatedly referred to himself as a “Friendly Federal Assassin” and mentioned Trump and his policies without directly naming him. Investigators are analyzing the writings, social media posts, and interviews with his family members.

IN ECONOMIC NEWS,
U.S. stocks are now stagnant after hovering by their records as oil prices continue to rise on Monday. The S&P 500 rose .1%. This is following its all-time high from the global economy preparing for destruction from the Iran war. The Dow Jones is down .2% and the Nasdaq rose .1% above its own record. Oil prices grew 3% due to tankers not being able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude set to be delivered in June rose 3.2% while most oil set to be delivered in July rose 2.9%. Brent prices were only at around 70 dollars a barrel before the war began and have hit 120 dollars in spikes since war began. This is due to blockades set by the U.S. Navy in Iran which Trump is refusing to call back. Iran has offered to reopen the strait if the U.S. ends the blockade. This weekend, Trump told the U.S. envoys not to go to Pakistan. Pakistan has been the main mediator of this conflict, which indicates Trump likely will not reopen the strait and will continue to try to sway the international chokehold that is the strait in his favor.

IN ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS,
Supreme court to hear arguments in landmark case against manufacturers of Roundup. The case could lead to the dismissal of tens of thousands of lawsuits against Bayer that claim the weedkiller Roundup caused non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Roundup is one of the most popular weedkilling products but has faced thousands of lawsuits for health defects. Evidence in lab animals, and more limited evidence in humans, has indicated a link between Roundup’s active ingredient, glyphosate, and cancer. The World Health Organization says there is probably a link between the two. The Trump administration has formally backed Bayer in the case, reversing a position taken by the Biden administration. In February President Trump also issued an executive order invoking the Defense Production Act to guarantee production of glyphosate-based herbicides.
