And here’s today’s news from National Health Executive on Thursday the 25th of July 2024.
Science and technology secretary Peter Kyle has today announced that research being supported by the UK Biobank will benefit from a £16m boost, thanks to a new partnership with Amazon Web Services that will help improve infrastructure and ultimately enhance health data usage. The investment comes in the form of $10m worth of cloud computing credits that will help the UK Biobank store and handle its data better, as well as access other AWS services like AI and machine learning.
The investment is the equivalent of around £8m which will be matched by the UK Government as part of the public-philanthropic consortium that was announced last autumn to ensure the biobank continues to be at the sharp end of medical research around the world. “This research is helping us develop the treatments that will improve and hopefully prolong all our lives,” said science and technology secretary Peter Kyle while visiting the UK Biobank today.
The General Medical Council has warned that plans to boost medical school places will fall flat unless the needs of trainers are prioritised after the results from this year’s national training survey show many are at a high risk of burnout. Though the majority of trainees are happy with their training and quality remains high, half of all of trainers were at moderate or high risk of burnout. This pattern has stayed consistent for a number of years, at 52% in both 2023 and 2022.
The GMC’s medical director, Professor Colin Melville, said: “These data show there are clear signs of strain. This will only intensify as the number of medical students grows, and as those students go on to join the workforce. Employers and workforce planners must look ahead and make sure educators have the protected time and support they need to fulfil their important roles.”
