Show Notes

As broadcast November 23, 2021 with plenty of comback for your podcast fight.  Tonight we mark a day in 1979 when Marianne Faithfull got popped at the airport in Oslo for marijuana possession, which is far less remarkable than the incredible artist even being on tour at that point in her life after a successful trip all the way to rock bottom back to stardom.  After that, it's almost two hours of all new indie & underground joints from Prince Paolo with a healthy contribution from Danno as well, as they go through the latest good goods out.

PART 1 SONGS
Marianne Faithful – Broken English
Willis – Bad Kids
Isaac Winemiller – Anything, at All
Duz Mancini – Shoot to Kill
Langva – Call Me
Atomic Blue – Something I Love
PART 1 FACTS
Marianne Faithfull – Broken English
- On this date in 1979, the artist was arrested at the airport in Oslo, Norway for possession of the evil weed. Now, that’s not so notable, but the artist’s up-and-down bio is for sure.
- Faithfull discovered success as a young artist in the early 70’s, but fell way off due to some rather massive and expensive drug habits. She even lived homeless for a time as well, but her 1979 album Broken English marked a comeback for her, although it seems some of the old habits followed her to Norway on this particular day.
Willis – Bad Kids
- This is an indie quintet based out of Nashville, TN but originally all from the same high school in Florence, Alabama. They mostly go with a psychedelic alternative blues and surf palette and consist of Murphy Billings, Glenn O’Steen, Will O’Steen, Edward Armstead, and Trey Murphy.
- Interesting group, and they have a pretty solid following of over 600k monthly plays on Spotify.
Isaac Winemiller – Anything, at All
- This is a guy based out of Bozeman, Montana in the US. Not a lot on the bio, but one notable thing is that Isaac is the tour bassist for Vansire.
- He’s only released a handful of standalone singles in his young career, having worked as a soloist since 2018.
Duz Mancini – Shoot to Kill
- This is the former lead singer of a rather successful band founded in New Orleans called Coyotes.
- However, Mancini has now moved on from the band and is doing things all on his lonesome. You can hear some of the legends listed in his bio within the music, most notably I think Lou Reed.
Langva – Call Me
- Another spacey joint right here, an artist really just starting to do his own thing from, like many of us, the comfort of his own bedroom. But, that’s about all we got here.
- A really soulful bit of spaced out sound right here, which appears courtesy of Kitsune in France.
Atomic Blue – Something I Love
- This is a group that is out of Copenhagen, Denmark and just released a really nice sophomore LP called However Many Days, which dropped at the end of last week.
- And speaking of favorite labels, they are one of the artists on the Nice Guys imprint, also of France.
PART 2 SONGS
Kindsight – Don't You Grow Up
Ryan Egan - Alone For The Last Time
Ok Cowgirl – Her Eyes
Cyranno - Plaster
TOPAZ - The Mirror
Close to Monday – Split

PART 2 FACTS
Kindsight – Don't You Grow Up
- Kindsight is a indie rock quartet based in Copenhagen. Their new track “Don’t You Grow Up” comes to us via Rama Lama Records.
- About the song, they say that it is a coming-of-age tune, and it was actually the first song the band ever wrote together. They said that when they wrote it, they viewed themselves as a sunny, teenaged rock band, so naturally, they felt that they had to write a song about teenagers in the sun.
- The track definitely has that summer vibe to it. The band just announced that their debut album will be released early next year so stay tuned for that.
Ryan Egan - Alone For The Last Time
- Ryan Egan is an artist originally from New York. He moved to Paris, to follow love, just before the pandemic hit last year.
- He says that he wrote this song in the first month of the pandemic, so it’s kind of funny that he, and many others would have to be locked down and alone for quite some time.
- “Alone for the Last Time” is the second single release from his forthcoming debut album. The album will be entitled Soft Power and that will drop in April of next year.
Ok Cowgirl – Her Eyes
- OK Cowgirl is a Brooklyn-based indie band and “Her Eyes” is their newest release and it is the second single off their debut EP, “Not My First Rodeo”, which is set to drop on December 8th.
- The song is about the journey of falling in love. More specifically, it’s about how you start off questioning your feelings about that special someone and then eventually deciding that you are indeed very much in love with them.
- I think it’s a charming song. It’s kind of a song about all those feelings and thoughts that come before you actually make the move and lean in for that first kiss.
Cyranno – Plaster
- Just last week, Cyranno released his debut EP. The EP is 4-tracks and it is called Consolations. I had a listen and I think it is really quite good. The production is well done and I think the 4 tracks do a great job of showcasing Cyranno’s talents.
- Cyranno is a multi-instrumentalist from Scotland. About “Plaster”, he says that it is the most vulnerable track on the EP. The song is about a time in his life when he felt completely broken and was only able to recover because a friend decided to help him out.
- He says that “Plaster” is for anyone who is struggling, and he wants people to know that there is strength in weakness, and there is nothing wrong with asking for help when you need it.
TOPAZ - The Mirror
- We’ve got a kind of chaotic and experimental end of part 2 of the program with the last two tracks of the hour. The first, comes to us courtesy of TOPAZ.
- TOPAZ is an artist that I’ve been keeping an eye on. His music is very interesting to listen to, really fresh sounding stuff in my opinion.
- TOPAZ is the moniker of producer Zach Johnson, who hails from Chicago. He’s got an EP coming soon. The EP is called Red Desert and it will be released on December 7th so stay tuned for that. I am definitely looking forward to that one.
Close to Monday – Split
- The second kind of chaotic tune comes to us from Close to Monday. Close to Monday is a band from Berlin and they describe themselves as electronic music romantics, which I think has a very nice ring to it.
- The band is actually a duo, but before last year it was a solo project. The union turned out to be a great move because their official debut single as a duo, “Interference” rose as high as number 2 on the German Alternative Music Charts. It spent 8 weeks straight in the top 10 so congrats on that success Close to Monday and I’m looking forward to hearing what else you have in store for us.
PART 3 SONGS
The Ugly Fun - Running With Scissors
MERCHANT - Staying In California
zzzahara - they dont know
Favours - Escaping
Wave – Routines
Colatura - We Run On Empty
PART 3 FACTS
The Ugly Fun - Running With Scissors
- The Ugly Fun is the moniker of Toronto-based producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Jeremy MacFarlane.
- I think his newest single, “Running with Scissors” is a really catchy, guitar-driven sort of lofi garage pop kind of tune. There are a lot of twists and turns along the way and I think that the song is just really well done.
MERCHANT - Staying In California
- “Staying in California” definitely sounds like it is literally from the 80s. I mean musically, there are the synths and even the saxophone blaring in the chorus... But I feel like even the lyrics and the concept of the song is somehow, classic 80s for sure.
- So, when I checked his Soundcloud page and saw a picture of Merchant wearing a pastel purple blazer and white t-shirt combo, I was not surprised at all.
- Merchant is from LA and he makes some seriously good music so go and check out his catalogue. There is some very good stuff there for sure.
zzzahara - they dont know
- It’s a little curious Danno, last week we had an artist named zzzof, spelt with 3 Zs, on the playlist and this week we have another z-z-z artist in zzzahara. Could this be a new trend? Well, I certainly hope it isn’t.
- Anyway, zzzahara is the moniker of California-based artist Zahara Jaime. The track is like a tornado of sound and there is a cool music video to go along with it too.
- The video is a video of Zahara and her partner, hanging out and causing all kinds of trouble all over town.
Favours – Escaping
- Favours is a trio based in Toronto. They released a very warmly received debut album called “Made to Wait” last year.
- Just recently, they released a new EP entitled “Left Behind”. “Escaping” is the new single from said EP and the band explains that it is a song about the secrets we all keep inside.
- More specifically, it’s about a scorned lover who is now more careful about exposing their feelings to new romantic partners.
Wave – Routines
- Wave is an artist from the Chicago area and there is something really engaging about this “Routines” track. The vocals are non-chalantly delivered and they are sitting in the back of the mix.
- The instrumental is woozy, really cool sounding, and the lead instrument has a sort of carnival-esque, merry-go-round kind of vibe to it. Very hypnotic tune with tons of detail, I had fun listening to this one more than a few times; I’m really feeling this one.
Colatura - We Run On Empty
- Colatura is a band currently based in Brooklyn. “We Run on Empty” is their third single release this year. It is taken from their forthcoming full-length debut album, which is expected to be released sometime next year.
- The band says that this song is about the concept of identity loss while being part of a toxic relationship. If I had to describe the song in a word, I would say the song is very “tender”.
-

PART 4 SONGS
Public Body - HARD TO CONCENTRATE
Deadletter - Pop Culture Connoisseur
ROE - Too Much For Anyone
Beirut - So Slowly
Mattiel - Jeff Goldblum

Benji Lewis - Unwind

PART 4 SONGS
Public Body - HARD TO CONCENTRATE
- Public Body is a cool band from East Sussex. They’ve got a new EP on the way. The EP will be entitled “Flavour of Labour”, spelt the Bristish way of course, and it is scheduled for release March 3rd next year.
- The song was written and produced by the band’s guitarist, Theo Verney. He says that the song is about his old office job. There was a canteen on the top floor with a nice balcony where he would eat huge lunches.
- He says that he would just go back to work after lunch and try not to fall asleep at the computer while doing his repetitive job.
Deadletter - Pop Culture Connoisseur
- I must admit that I’m a little late with this track, it came out a couple of weeks ago but I thought it paired really nicely with the Public Body track before it.
- Deadletter is a six-piece band from Yorkshire and “Pop Culture Connoisseur” comes via Nice Swan Records.
- Interesting story behind this song. The song is inspired by police officer Simon Read, formerly of the Cambridgeshire Police. He got fired for allegedly stealing a box of donuts.
- It was a self-checkout place. He scanned the barcode for some carrots twice and didn’t scan the barcode for the box donuts. He insists it was an honest mistake but officials didn’t buy his story.
ROE - Too Much For Anyone
- ROE is from Derry, Ireland and she describes herself as your grumpy, multi-instrumentalist nerd making existential indie music.
- About 4 months ago, she released a track called “Cruel”. It turned out to be a very successful single as it was featured on BBC Radio 1 and it was BBC Introducing’s track of the week.
- She is following that up with this new song, “Too Much For Anyone”, which is actually one half of a double release. The other track is called “Destroyer” but I’m playing “Too Much for Anyone” just because I’m feeling it a little more at the moment.
- Anyway, ROE is definitely an artist to watch, she’s getting a lot of attention.
Beirut - So Slowly
- Beirut is a band fronted by Zach Condon. If you didn’t know, Beirut is a proper veteran band in the game, having released their debut album, “Gulag Orkestar” almost 15 years ago.
- Beirut has just announced that a new album is on the way. The new album will be called Artifacts, it will consist of b-sides, reworks, and unreleased tracks the band has collected over the years.
- Artifacts is out January 28th and will come via Pompeii Records so be on the lookout for that.
Mattiel - Jeff Goldblum
- Mattiel is the musical project of Mattiel Brown and producer Jonah Swilley. Mattiel has just announced that a third album is currently in the works and should be released this coming March.
- Jeff Goldblum is the first single from that forthcoming album and Mattiel
Brown explains that the song is of course about Jeff Goldblum. She says that she has a huge crush on him and that all the song lyrics are inspired by the famous actor.
- Since we're on the topic, is there any famous movie star that you had or currently have a big crush on?

Benji Lewis - Unwind
- We've got a quiet banger to close off tonight's show courtesy of Benji Lewis, who hails from the land of Oz.
- This track was produced by fellow Aussie, Golden Vessel. If you didn't already know, Golden Vessel and his crew in Australia are absolutely everywhere in the indie space these days.
- Anyway, you can definitely hear Golden Vessel's influence all other this Benji Lewis track. It's laid back but bouncy, and the overall vibe is very warm and summery. I guess it makes sense because summer is just starting in Australia right?
