Stories are a big part of the African culture and growing up in the city of Port-Harcourt, these stories shaped my childhood. Times are different now and these bedtime stories which were passed down through generations are not as popular with children as they once were. This podcast aims to bring these stories to the new generation of African children and introduce everyone else to these wonderful stories from the motherland. The lessons and values learnt from these will never be forgotten. Welcome to Stories Mother Told.
The Legend of Queen Nzinga: Protector of the Land
In a land filled with lush forests, roaring rivers, and vast plains, there was a kingdom named Ndongo, nestled in what we now call Angola. Long ago, this peaceful kingdom was disturbed by loud, thundering noises. Strange ships with white sails appeared on the horizon, bringing with them the Portuguese, who wanted to take the people of Ndongo away as slaves.
But there was one person who stood tall and defiant against these intruders: a young princess named Nzinga.
Nzinga wasn't an ordinary princess. As a child, she loved listening to tales of brave warriors and wise leaders. She trained with the best warriors, learned the secrets of the land, and mastered the art of diplomacy. She was ready to protect her people no matter what.
One day, a big meeting was arranged with a Portuguese governor. Nzinga entered the room to find there was no chair for her, just a floor mat. The governor thought he could belittle her, making her sit lower than him. But Nzinga was too clever for that! She signaled one of her loyal aides, who knelt on the ground. Gracefully, Nzinga sat on his back, making her own royal throne, showing she was the governor's equal.
The Portuguese soon realized that Nzinga was no ordinary queen. She was a fierce protector, a brilliant strategist, and an emblem of hope. When they tried to invade, she allied with other nations, even the Dutch, turning enemies into friends.
But Queen Nzinga's heart was as big as her courage. She couldn't bear the thought of people being taken away from their homes and families. So, she made her kingdom a safe haven for anyone escaping the clutches of slavery. They found shelter, food, and, most importantly, freedom under her rule.
As time went on, stories of Nzinga's bravery spread like wildfire, from village to village, kingdom to kingdom. Children would gather around campfires, eyes wide with wonder, as elders recounted tales of the fierce queen who rode into battle, the wise leader who outsmarted her foes, and the compassionate protector who gave hope to the hopeless.
Even today, many moons after Queen Nzinga left this world, her legacy remains. In Angola, parents tell their children of the fearless queen who stood up against giants, teaching them that with courage, wisdom, and a kind heart, anyone can become a hero.
And so, the legend of Queen Nzinga, the protector of Ndongo, lives on, inspiring generations to stand tall, be brave, and always, always protect their loved ones.
