Venus:
Hello everyone, and welcome to Awakening Adventures, where we hear real stories from people who have experienced a spiritual awakening and what they were guided to do with their new awareness.
My name is Venus Castleberg, also known as the Home Whisperer, where I use my gift to help real estate agents clear the energy from stuck homes so they can sell with greater ease.
Today, I’m so excited to welcome my guest, Joel.
Joel Holc is an energy awareness coach and emerging author in the healing arts. His book, The Eggshell Effect, shares how he discovered the source of a lifetime of illness and how he transformed his health beyond the limitations set by conventional medicine.
I’m really excited to explore Joel’s personal spiritual awakening and what unfolded as a result. Welcome to the show, Joel. It’s so nice to have you.
Joel:
Thank you, Venus. I appreciate you and appreciate you holding this space for people to tap into.
Venus:
My pleasure. So let’s start at the beginning—when did your spiritual awakening happen?
Joel:
Around 2013. It wasn’t one single moment, but a series of “wow” moments that became so frequent I had no choice but to wake up.
Venus:
What was the pivotal moment that started everything?
Joel:
In the spring of 2013, I got a call from my sister in Israel telling me that if I wanted to see my mom alive one more time, I needed to come immediately. Within 24 hours I was there, and I spent the last week of her life with her.
When I returned home to Pittsburgh, about a day later my wife told me she was leaving. Within one week, I lost my mom and my marriage.
I didn’t want to kill myself, but I would have been okay if a truck ran me over. I couldn’t eat, sleep, breathe, or function. I was a zombie. I still had two teenage kids, so I kept going for them.
Eventually, I asked myself the most important question of my life: How did I get here?
I had businesses, success, yet I was deeply unsatisfied. I was battling an autoimmune disease, living a life I never imagined for myself. So I went back in time, reviewing my life step by step, until I landed at age seven.
That was the year I had to repeat first grade. My logic as a child was simple: smart kids move on, stupid kids stay behind. I felt shame, embarrassment, and was singled out. That moment created a ripple effect that influenced every day of my life.
I realized how much fear had been sourcing my entire existence. I was surviving and reacting nonstop until I couldn’t anymore. Everything fell apart—and that collapse opened the door to the spiritual world.
Venus:
How did you view the world before that time compared to after?
Joel:
Before, life was a chess game. Everything had to be calculated, controlled, manipulated. That applied to business and emotions. I was hiding a big secret—I had dyslexia and didn’t truly learn to read or write until eighth grade.
I walked through life carrying shame and protecting that secret at all costs. That created enormous limitation.
After my awakening, I shifted from living for destinations to living for the journey. Life became about trust instead of control.
Venus:
When you say trust, what are you trusting?
Joel:
For me, I trust God—but others may trust themselves, the universe, Mother Earth, or their soul. What matters is alignment. I listen to my body. I feel alignment in my chest and ribs. I trust instinct. I trust the universe.
Venus:
How did this shift impact your health?
Joel:
Everything is energy. I carried shame, fear, and the belief that I wasn’t good enough for decades. That energy got stuck in my body, and I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that nearly paralyzed me.
Living in secrecy came at a cost—I paid for it in my body.
Venus:
What were the first steps you took to change that?
Joel:
I changed my diet, stopped drinking coffee, focused on water, supplements, and exercise. That helped my body, but the real transformation happened when I took care of my soul.
I built a healing team—nutritionists, therapists, spiritual practitioners, massage, acupuncture, yoga. I immersed myself in spiritual teachings. I slowed down. That’s when lasting healing occurred.
Venus:
That’s beautiful. Tell us about your book, The Eggshell Effect.
Joel:
The book exists to help people identify the moment their life was kidnapped by fear—the moment they shifted into surviving instead of creating.
We all create from two energies: fear or love. Fear isn’t always bad—it can create success—but it robs us of joy.
The purpose of the book is to help people complete that fear-based moment so they can choose differently. When awareness enters, choice becomes possible.
Venus:
Thank you so much for sharing your story, Joel.
