Steven Spielberg says his new film “Disclosure Day” won’t just explore aliens and government secrecy, but the spiritual fallout such a revelation could trigger. In an interview with Ben Mankiewicz on “CBS News Sunday Morning,” Spielberg said the movie considers how overnight confirmation of extraterrestrials could cause “ontological shock” and “social dislocation,” adding, “that would mess up a lot of people.” He said the film, which features a former Roman Catholic nun, also wrestles with a larger theological question: “Is God, our God, only on this planet, or is God a God for every system where there’s civilization?” The comments sparked backlash online, with Christian podcaster Josh Daws saying, “No it won’t,” and Crisis Magazine editor Eric Sammons arguing only non-Christians think aliens would shake Christian faith.

The Pentagon has revised its list of recognized religious affiliations after backlash from Mormon lawmakers over the way The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was categorized. The Department of War said the earlier list contained “redundant and unnecessary labeling, and the mistake has been fixed,” adding that its role “is not to adjudicate theological debates, but instead to ensure sincerely-held faith is respected and encouraged in our ranks.” The dispute erupted after Sen. Mike Lee of Utah asked why the church was “left out of the list of Christian churches,” while Sen. John Curtis said Latter-day Saints are “unequivocally Christian.” The original overhaul had cut military faith codes from 211 to 31. Commentators including David French argued the issue was less about doctrine than the Establishment Clause, saying such debates are “none of the state’s business.”

Former Newsboys frontman John James is opening up about fame, failure and faith in his new memoir, *Newsboy: My Story of Hope and Second Chances*, released as the Christian music world grapples with fallout from allegations against former Newsboys singer Michael Tait. James, who left the band in 1997 amid addiction, infidelity and depression, said, “I had a tragic fall with my own personal life,” and now believes “my story of brokenness and redemption needs to be shouted louder than ever.” He stressed accountability over blame, saying, “I totally took responsibility for the sin.” Reflecting on scandal in ministry, James added, “My heart goes out to the people who were wounded,” but warned, “If we become the redemption police … what hope is there for any of us?” Today, James and his wife Tanya lead iReachUSA, ministering in prisons and recovery centers.

A senior Ukrainian official is urging the World Council of Churches to expel the Russian Orthodox Church, accusing it of backing Moscow’s war in Ukraine. Viktor Yelensky, head of Ukraine’s State Service for Freedom of Conscience, said the WCC should “exclude the Russian Church from membership since its activities directly contradict the fundamental principles of Christianity.” Speaking in Paris, Yelensky called the Moscow Patriarchate “an enemy of both religious freedom and Ukraine” and said sanctions against Patriarch Kirill were “absolutely legitimate.” The push comes after fresh Russian strikes killed at least 22 civilians across Ukraine. Ukraine’s Council of Churches said those “bloody crimes” were carried out “with the active support of the Moscow Patriarchate.” The WCC previously rejected expulsion calls, though General Secretary Rev. Prof. Jerry Pillay later sought clarification after Kirill described the conflict as a “holy war.”

A public debate over women in ministry is taking center stage ahead of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Annual Meeting in Orlando, where Baptist Women in Ministry has unveiled a billboard declaring, “God calls women to pastor, preach and minister.” The Waco-based group says the sign will remain up through June 14 as messengers weigh a proposed constitutional amendment backed by Southern Baptist Theological Seminary President Albert Mohler. The measure would bar churches from “affirm[ing], appoint[ing], or endors[ing] a woman serving in the office or function of a pastor/elder/overseer.” BWIM executive director Rev. Meredith Stone warned the proposal “goes further in limiting women than anything proposed before,” saying even women who “preach, teach, minister or lead” in roles deemed pastoral could put their churches at risk of disfellowship. Supporters, including presidential nominees Josh Powell and Willy Rice, say the change upholds biblical standards.

Influencer couple Jesse and Ashley Ridgway are defending their decision to abort a pregnancy after a Down syndrome diagnosis, saying they want to keep “pushing forward” despite fierce backlash online. In interviews with TMZ Live and Page Six, Jesse Ridgway said critics, including religious commenters, told them they would “burn in Hell,” prompting him to add security at home. Ashley Ridgway said she wants to be a “voice” for women facing similar situations and to show “this is a normal thing” to discuss. Jesse also justified the decision by saying he feared he would “have to bury my son” and called that “not what I wanted to sign up for.” The comments drew condemnation from pro-life advocates including Kristan Hawkins, who responded bluntly: “Death was not a cure.”

Vice President JD Vance is reflecting on the personal legacy of slain Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, calling his late friend a model of “faith and fatherhood” in an excerpt from his forthcoming book, *Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith*. Vance recalled traveling to Utah after Kirk was killed at Utah Valley University and said widow Erika Kirk’s grief centered on her children, not politics: “She cared about her babies.” Her description of Charlie as a husband and father who never “yelled, cursed or lost his temper” prompted Vance to examine his own life, writing, “None of them will care that I was the vice president.” He also shared that after the loss, wife Usha became pregnant with their fourth child. Vance praised Kirk as “a person of profound faith,” adding, “we are all, together, part of the same Church.”
