Guess what? You don't have to keep up. You just have to keep going. Welcome to the Muthership Creator Strategy. You'll notice that I'm lit tonight.
Helen:You know why? Because I had the idea for this topic, and I decided even though it's later in the day than I normally record, that I was gonna set up a light and do it while it's on my mind. Because I feel this way often, and I know I can't be alone. I'm positive that there's a lot of people out there that are thinking everybody's doing better than me. Everybody's doing more than me.
Helen:Everybody's accomplishing more more than me. I'm not doing enough. And things are moving so fast now. The digital age is no joke. And we're constantly...
Helen:Like, of course, it makes us more efficient. We can do this. We can pop this into AI and write this much faster, and we can get an outline, we do all the things. And then there's creators using AI to make videos. And so we always feel like we're behind.
Helen:I think a lot of us do. And what I want to do is start by saying, okay. First off, let us name what the overwhelm is. As a person who is trying to do a million things all the time, and I am so guilty of it, and I know I get asked all the time, do I ever sleep? And good news, I do sleep and I sleep well.
Helen:When I finally do shut down, I power down at night. It's just like a computer. You could see all the windows closing. It's true. Anyway, but the point is even even I with all the things that I'm doing, I never...
Helen:I don't think I'm doing enough. I have to post more on LinkedIn. I have to make sure I'm showing up on all the on all the platforms. Oh, I'm not even doing reach outs for possible brand opportunities. I I just know that it feels like we all don't have enough time in the day, and it's getting worse and worse with how quickly things are moving.
Helen:So we're gonna start by naming what your overwhelm is. I want you to be honest with yourself, and you can start by thinking, okay, I don't have... I'm not on enough platforms. I'm not doing enough videos. Everyone else seems to be using newer tools than me.
Helen:I'm always behind. The first thing we really wanna do is validate that feeling and say it's it's real. It's tangible. I see what other people are doing, and I know they're doing more than me. Why can't I keep up?
Helen:Okay? So we're gonna validate it. But the second thing is realize that you are not competing with the whole Internet. You don't have to be doing as many things as everyone else in your field is doing, for for real. I mean, for all we know, behind the scenes, they're going crazy and spinning in a million directions.
Helen:And some... In some cases, they have teams that they're hiring to do things. So you cannot compare yourself. So you have to realize that you are not competing with them. You don't have to do the same thing as them.
Helen:And in a way, you're better off if you're not. I've had this thing all along whenever I do one on ones, and people are constantly comparing that they wanna be like this creator, and they wanna do what that creator's doing. And I'm like, why are you watching what other people are doing? Be be true to yourself. You don't have to be like them.
Helen:And there's creators that post... I know there's huge million TikTok follower creators that post, like, three times a week. And I'm like, jeez. They keep their followers happy with three posts a week. Good on them.
Helen:Good on you, I like to say to them. But take a page out of that book and realize that, you know, they're not, like, losing followers over it over it. They're still doing fine. They're getting their collabs and doing their things, and it's... You don't have to be someone else.
Helen:Okay? So the reality check is that the the massive amounts of people that are not posting on social media are not even seen by you. And you're you're thinking of all the people that you see on social media, but think of the hundreds, and I'm sure we all have hundreds in our life, that aren't doing anything on social media. And are you comparing yourself to that person? Maybe maybe you are, but then compare yourself to that person and say, geez, I'm doing more than them.
Helen:You know what I mean? There's always someone that's doing less than you in your field, whether it's in your life. So you can... If you're gonna start comparing, like, find the right people to compare yourself to and realize that you are way ahead if you're even doing this in the first place. And especially the demographic that I work with, and I'm sure my listeners are, we are not even the the high...
Helen:The majority of people on social media. So think about young people. There's so many more of them doing the doing the things, and they have to compare and look at each other and see what they're doing. We don't even have that. I go out to dinner, and I almost can't even talk about social media with people because they don't even know anything about it, and they have zero interest in it.
Helen:And it's a struggle at times. So if you're gonna compare yourself to anyone, maybe put yourself in the mindset of, well, I'm doing a lot more than the people that aren't posting at all. And you don't even have to think about a person. Just think in general. There's a demographic of a percentage of people that aren't posting at all.
Helen:The next thing is to realize that you don't have to do all the things. That is so important. You have to do one thing well and maybe a couple of things more if you want to, but you don't have to do all the things. Now in the beginning of twenty twenty six, I listened to a very eye opening podcast. I wish I could remember the name of it, but it was about, the concept was that if you are doing so many things and you have a goal on one of the things, you're never gonna reach that goal because you're constantly doing all the other things that are keeping you away from achieving that goal.
Helen:And I had this thought in the beginning of the year. I'm like, I am really gonna pay the most attention to what I want the most, which is to have the studio be successful. And I know that's hard for me to even say out loud because as a production person and as a director, I love my job so much. I love being on the shoots. I love doing the productions every single time the project excites me, the concept, how I can make it great.
Helen:I dive so deep in, and I love it so much. So it's hard for... It was hard for me to even grasp that reality like this... If this is what I want the most, then I really have to let everything else go, and I don't want to. So this is my own personal struggle.
Helen:But I will tell you, I decided to put the studio in the front of the line and then let the production happen as it was meant to happen, which is different. Because typically I'm always thinking, when is the next production job? Who should I be contacting? Who should I be networking with? And I I have always kept myself in that mix.
Helen:But guess what I figured out, hello, is that the more I focused on the studio and building and my social media and learning and learning the things that I wanted to teach and helping my studio members level up, guess what happened to me? I became more attractive to the brands and the productions by being visible and not even trying to pitch them, trying to sell them, trying to find them. So it was a really good exercise for me. It was a really good learning experience because I was... I I I'm so used to my whole career having to think about when the next gig is coming and when's the next production and keep that ball in the air at all times.
Helen:And I I let myself not do it. And for a while, for a couple of months even, I was almost stressed about it thinking, well, I guess I'm doing this. I'm letting it go. But what happened to me, which was really interesting, is that I attracted it back in a way that was different, that I didn't have to fight for, I suppose, maybe is a way to say it. So if you focus on the things that you want the most, if you focus on the couple of things that you are...
Helen:You really love or do well or you wanna lean into, and then you figure out ways to stay visible on the other things, if it's a consideration of, like, I wanna be on other apps, but I never have time to post there, then really decide, is it worth paying for repurpose.io? I'm gonna put the link in the show notes here. Is it worth paying for it? Because then you can have everything repurposed, and that takes a little bit off you in terms of time, in terms of remembering and doing all the different captioning and posting. Because even you...
Helen:Even though you say to yourself it takes five minutes, I'm not gonna spend money on an app. It takes me five minutes to post here and five minutes to there. Is it really five minutes? No. And also, the five minutes and five minutes, five plus five plus five adds up, and next thing it's an hour, and next thing you're rewriting a caption, next thing...
Helen:And it really isn't five minutes. So you have to decide what your time is valued at and what you can give up, and that's a thing. So, again, we're gonna regroup. You don't have to do everything. You just gotta do one or two things that make you feel like progress is happening.
Helen:So yay to that. And then, I want you to think about this. If you just do this consistently for a few months and you focus on these things, you're gonna be able to look back, and progress looking back is a lot. There are many, many people who years go by and they don't make any progress because they're stuck or they were just worried it wasn't the right time, all the things. And this way, you're gonna be able to look back and say, oh, I posted consistently, whether...
Helen:Whatever the goal was that you wanted to do. I posted consistently on that platform, and look what happened. And I know. I'm gonna shout out my people when they post consistently on YouTube. Next thing you know, they're...
Helen:They have subscribers on YouTube, they pass the watch hours, and now they're getting paid on YouTube because they're paying attention to it, and they leaned into that one thing. So it doesn't matter if you're not leaning into all the things. You will see progress. When a year goes by, you'll look back and say, this, this, this, and this happened. It's it's happening, and it's happening.
Helen:I'm seeing it, and I love it because when we post in the studio and we're like, are your wins of the week? And I'm like, hoo hoo. I won't start jumping up and down with everybody because I'm like, yes. This person had a viral video. Yes.
Helen:This person finally knows how to do a transition. All all the things feel like progress to me too. So it's it's like it's a win win for everybody. And then the last thing that you need to do in order to not feel like you're behind is manage your own psyche. Manage your own expectations of what you're...
Helen:Don't make a plan. It's like making a New Year's resolution that is absolutely not achievable. It's impossible. And don't do it to yourself. The real fix is not to do more.
Helen:It's to recalibrate what enough looks like. It's like making a to do list that is actually an achievable to do list. This way, at the end of the day, you don't have to feel like a failure because you didn't check everything off the list. You're gonna feel like, I did all the things I said I was gonna do, because you started with less. A plan that has less.
Helen:It's a manageable plan. Alright? So this is it. I am going to implore you at... After this episode to look at what you're doing, look at what you think you need to do, and take some things off the list.
Helen:That's your goal right now, especially now. We're gonna get into... Holiday season's coming soon. I mean, next thing you know, you're gonna be spinning around and trying to... You...
Helen:It's gonna be really frustrating. So let's set ourselves up for success and not failure. So start thinking, okay, what's the platform you're gonna focus on? Great. Are you interested in doing a repurpose app?
Helen:If not, then decide you're not gonna post on x, y, and z channels for now. Just take that off your plate if that's it. If you're like, I really gotta post on YouTube, and I gotta post on on social media. If you wanna do those things, go to the DualShot app. Shoot them both at the same time.
Helen:Unfortunately, you still have to edit two things, to export them. But potentially think about when you edit the one that's the horizontal long format, you're not gonna be as critical. You're gonna let it fly as it is the way I do with these podcasts. I... Unless I just almost choke in the middle of...
Helen:Choke. Unless I have a coughing attack in the middle of one. I don't really spend a whole lot of time editing these. I just listen to make sure somebody didn't interrupt me. Did I have a break in the action?
Helen:And I do my fancy hand waving thing, so if I make a mistake, I can just go scroll through quickly and find the hand wave, and then I can make my edit. Think about how to make your things more efficient and do less of them. Do less of the things. You're gonna thank me later. Whatever you did today, this week, this month, is more than the person that you're thinking about is doing more.
Helen:I'm positive. Anybody that's listening to this is ahead of the game already because you're listening, you're thinking, you're planning. You've already got spades on a bunch of people. So what you need to do is now look at your own list and back away from it and take a couple of things off it. It's gonna make you feel better because you're gonna accomplish everything.
Helen:You're gonna enjoy it more because you're not gonna be chasing, like running behind all the time. Instead, you're gonna be a little bit ahead. Wow. I finished that already, and I have some free time now. Alright.
Helen:This is it. This is your challenge for the week. It's a new one, but I just thought of it tonight because I was like, man, I'm trying to do all these things. I have a shoot coming up. I have to make sure I have 20 tutorials lined up.
Helen:I was... I'm making myself crazy. And I'm like, what am I doing? What am I doing? I'm gonna record a podcast about this right now, and I'm gonna help myself.
Helen:This is like my guided meditation for you. Okay? You're gonna go back and you're gonna look. And then at the end of our meditation today, it's gonna be what's the action item? And your action item is to look and see if there's something that you're trying to keep up with all the time that you can just let go for a month and say, I'm gonna take that off my plate for a month, and I'm not gonna worry about this.
Helen:Or you're gonna look at it and say, you know what? I've been posting every day for the past two months. It will help me if I post every other day for a while. And go right ahead and do that. Allow yourself the decision, the choice to change it and not have to do it the way you've been doing it if it's not...
Helen:If it feels like you're chasing it. Because this should be fun. This should be... This is... This should bring you good feelings.
Helen:It shouldn't be such a horrible chore that it's like you're running around in circles on a hamster wheel. So the real fix is not to do more. It's to recalibrate your current situation and decide if the things you're doing are too many and how you can pair it back. And it's okay to pair it back because at the end of our life, it's not gonna be like, oh my god. Did we...
Helen:You know, how much... How many social media posts did we do? No. It's gonna be how much fun did we have? How much joy did we bring?
Helen:How many connections did we make? It's just like, look at the important things, and I'm doing it, so I want you to do it with me. Okay? So that is my thought for tonight, and it's a little more personal than it normally is. However, it is still on topic for social media because I do think we start running ourselves into the ground, and then our social media really suffers because our content suffers because we start analyzing things too much.
Helen:I post every day, and I only got 200 views. So guess what? Only getting 200 views? Post every other day. Take a break for yourself.
Helen:Figure out what's gonna be fun and change it in that way. Add something in that's fun and take something away that's not. That's the goal for this week. I'm gonna leave you with that and I hope that you have a really good really good week. Thank you so much for joining me for this more introspective session that will hopefully help you reframe what you're doing in your social media and digital life.
Helen:Because let's not make it too horrific. Let's have fun with it. Because we all need to make sure we're having fun and making the right kind of memories. Alright. See you next week.
Helen:Bye.
