100xLife Podcast

In this episode, Rob Dayton breaks down one of the most counterintuitive mindsets of Jesus that almost no one actually lives out.
If you want to be great, become a servant.
Jesus doesn’t shut down the desire for greatness. He redirects it. While the world teaches you to get, climb, and compete, Jesus flips it and says the path forward is serving everyone around you.
Rob walks through how our brains are wired for self-serving behavior and why most people live in a quiet, transactional mindset without realizing it. Then he shows how to retrain your thinking so service becomes natural, not forced.
This is not about being “nice.” This is about rewiring your life around love in action.
If you’ve been focused on what you can get, overlooked opportunities to serve, or felt stuck in self-focused patterns, this will challenge you in the best way.

Rob Dayton (00:36)Hey, 100xlifers. Welcome back to the podcast. We are continuing our 10-part series on the mindsets of Jesus. And today, we're doing mindset six. The mindset is, I am a servant to all. my gosh, this is awesome. I hope you enjoyed last week's. I want to get into that a little bit. But if I could just give you one thing.

on this podcast. If I could give you, if I had one prayer answered for you, this would be it. May you experience the love of Jesus and may you become proficient at transforming the way you think. Those two things that you would experience Jesus's love and that you would be transformed in the way you think the gospel and the abundant life.

The gospel and the abundant life open with encounter of Jesus. So the encounter with Jesus is definitely something you need to have. And encountering with Jesus leads to a loving him and others. And those are Jesus's greatest commandments. Love the Lord your God with the heart, mind, soul, and strength. And then the second is like it. Love your neighbor as yourself. If you encounter Jesus on a regular basis, you encounter love, and you naturally will do that. But then without the ability to transform the way you think,

You're left to be swimming upstream, never naturally loving God and people with all your mind, heart, soul and strength. The battle is between what you want to do and what you naturally do every day. And that is the difference is the conscious mind and the brain, the unconscious brain, which is your body. That is the battle. So conscientiously, as Jesus followed, we say, I'm in, I want to do this.

And then our brains tell us a different thing. They tell us different stories which don't look like faith. And that's the Romans 7 scenario. I do what I don't want to do, and I don't want to do what I don't want to do. I do. That's because your conscious mind, which is outside your brain and your brain, are in this battle. When Jesus says the word repent, it comes from the word metamorphosis. So we get our transformation metamorphosis, turning from a caterpillar to a butterfly, that kind of transformation.

is what he's thinking about. And here is the key strategy for transformation. The key strategy for transformation is becoming who I need to be to live in love. That's the key strategy. I just want to become who I need to be to live in love. And that answer is found in Jesus' commands, his behaviors of love. Who am I becoming? Or who do I need to become?

Creating mindsets hinges on this question. And so that's a great question for you to ask in any situation you're in. say you're in a difficult situation, difficult conversations coming up, and you're not sure what to do. Ask Holy Spirit, who do I need to become in this conversation? with parenting, you cast your unique vision for you as a parent,

And many parents will say, well, this is what I want my child to be. And then ask yourself, well, who do I need to become to be the parent that would support the child becoming that person? That's when you really shift. What Jesus is saying to us is he's saying, hey, let's focus on love. And then let's change the way your brain naturally thinks so that you will automatically produce love in your life. When we focus on conscious thoughts,

That's when we're reprogramming. and we reprogram our brains. We are rewiring natural connections over time. It's all based on what your focus is. But we can eliminate the battle. That's the good news. We can eliminate the battle. We don't completely eliminate it. But if we're going to get to slaves to righteousness, and maybe the Romans 8 philosophy, that means that our conscientious thought and our brains are aligned.

and they're one in the same. They're working together. want them to go in the same direction where love naturally manifests from every part of our life. That's why we're talking about mindsets. That's why we want to reprogram our minds to automatically do the behaviors of love. Week one, we talked about the mindset of believing in the one God sent, which is Jesus. So just believing in.

having a mindset that Jesus was preeminent, Jesus is God on this planet, Jesus is the one that I must focus on. And then week two, we talked about the mindset of living as one led by Jesus, actually having a mindset that you're following someone and having your life be thinking about or looking for Jesus. Where are you going, Jesus? Where are you taking me, Jesus? Week three, we talked about seeing the words of Jesus as your freedom, not as a sacrifice, not as

Unreasonable demands. He says, my yoke is easy. My burden And he's actually asking us to do things that are going to create the abundant life for us. So they're not really sacrificial, but you've got to see everything he asks you to do as your freedom. So that's a great mindset. Week four, we focused on the reality that you are the dwelling place of God and that you dwell in him. Man, that was, I think that's probably one of my favorites.

If you haven't listened to that one, go back and listen to it. Last week, we focused on the reality that all people bear the image of God. And how does that change us from an inward mindset, which is focused on judgments, to an outward mindset that's focused on loving people? Wow, that one was good. And now we're going to focus on I am a servant to all.

This one comes from 100X Life, Word of Jesus number 50. Jesus is saying, be a servant to all. And I'm proposing this as an amazing mindset. Remember, these 10 mindsets are trying to get you a huge head start in Jesus' following. They're trying to get you to abide or to obey the 55 commands of Christ. This is the fastest way to do it, is repentance. Change the way you think. These core mindsets are going to give you huge advances.

as you work on them. today, I'm a servant of all. It's based on Jesus's story about John and James. John and James, his disciples, they had a question. They had a question, and they wanted to be the best. They wanted to be the greatest. They wanted to sit to his left and his right. And that's from, you could find that in Mark 10. You can find that in Matthew so the question is, how do you be the greatest?

And the mindset is the pathway to greatness. It's interesting. This mindset we're talking about is the pathway to greatness because Jesus answers the question. He answers the question. doesn't say to James and John, and I think a lot of people miss this. He doesn't say, bad question. No, you shouldn't ask that question. No, he says, let me tell you how to be great. You know, the seats to the right and the left are my father's to give. But if you want to be great, let me tell you how to do that.

Be a servant to everyone. Be a slave to all. And so I want you to take this. really feel like being a servant of all and actually embodying that mindset requires you to kind of look at it as a self-serving way. In other words, don't you want greatness? And if you're someone who's like, hey, I don't want greatness at all. Fame is nothing for me. Or accomplishing a lot is nothing for me. I just want to serve people. Then fine. Then you're going to be on board.

But those of us who are, and I'd include me in this, where we want to be great, yeah, servant is the pathway. Being a servant to all is a pathway. So we've got to rewire our brain so that we can see servanthood as the best way to get to greatness.

Your brain is actually wired for self-serving behavior. So the fastest way to change is to work in parallel to where your brain already wants to take you. So maybe the first imagination for transformation is just meditating on how servanthood is the ultimate abundant life strategy. Picture how you're serving others throughout your day. Can you go through a day and just picture, OK, how am I serving others? Picture yourself serving people in a variety of ways.

What is your greatest leverage point for service? So that's a pathway to just think about, OK, so I'm going through my day. How am I serving people in every conversation? We live in a transactional society. What I mean by that is everyone's looking to get something from someone else. And maybe James and John, they're like, I'm trying to get this from Jesus. I just want to be the greatest.

And Jesus is totally upside down. It's totally different than we would normally expect. He's saying, hey, be a servant, give. In another scripture quoted by Paul, Jesus says, it's better for you to give than it is for you to receive. That's also self-serving behavior. In other words, hey, you want to have the best life, go ahead and give. Well, that's what he's saying with being a servant to all. If you want to actually indulge,

in the transactional would just be like, what can I get? But if you convert that to how can I serve, Jesus is saying, that's how you'll get. So you see the difference? So in our society, we might call each other because we want something. What's the last time you called someone just to check in and see how they're doing? Or better yet, when's the last time you called someone to see how you could serve them better?

not from a business kind of way, but as a kind of way. That kind of shift from a transactional society, that's a great way to start also in this mindset, is to avoid the transactional and call people, text them, just to make yourself available to serve them. That is so powerful. And then your most natural leverage point is the

area of God's designed genius inside you. In the Master's program, we're focused on finding your kingdom, calling.

kingdom calling is that thing about you that exercises Jesus intentions when he created you. He had intentions for you. Ephesians 2 10 is talking about he's prepared work for you to do in advance before he even created you. And I love that so much because the work that he wants you to do is completely related to the talent and the passion and the purpose he's placed in you.

So one could argue that when you're in God's will, you're in service to others, and you're doing it. The way to find that is, well, what's my potential? What's my passion? What's my purpose? Potential is talent and your experience. So what are those things? If I were to lean into what God was thinking when he created me and do the works, that work would be servant oriented. How do I find that? How might you discover what that is? Well,

The first place to start is passion because passion is centered around service to others. We're passionate about the types of people that we want to serve. So who are you most excited about serving? And what are you doing to them? What are you doing? Or maybe it's you're doing that for them or you're doing it with them. But these types of people that you just really need to serve. I love serving, particularly men.

who really want to transform and follow Jesus. Man, I love that. I am so all in. If you're that guy, man, I want to be around you. I want to pour into you. I want to serve you well. So we want to capitalize on the God's design in us as an indication of how we're going to produce the most service. So in the area of potential, passion, and purpose, this is how that goes. This is how you might.

create a statement of service. might say, am serving best when I am, for me that might be coaching coaching is the talent. And then the second one is passion. So coaching guys who want to experience transformation and follow Jesus for the purpose of, so the purpose, the outcome that I want to see is that their lives are really transformed, that they're genuinely

and wholeheartedly following Jesus. That's what I want. That's what I want to see. So it's interesting. You've got your talent. This is what I want to do. It's the verb of the sentence. And I'm doing it with these people that I define that are my passion. And the outcome is the purpose. If you align those three things and create a statement, That will be a beautiful area to aim your service to others. I am a servant to all. That's a great way to aim it.

Here's another strategy is just to keep it in your mind all day long. Just say, OK, this day, I'm just going to think about who am I serving at any given moment. I'm going to go through my day asking this question. And the answer is just going to come naturally. you focus, whatever you're focused on, that's what's going to arise. It's like your brain is like the internet. Whatever you're focused on, your brain starts showing you. So if you ask your brain the question with your conscious mind, who could I be of service today?

Your brain will see that and rise that to your conscious mind so you can focus on it. That's just the way God designed the brain. So it's going to come naturally. And then you lean into your service. So like, you know, and I like to talk about the grocery store a lot. But like when you're in the grocery store, if you enter the grocery and you say, who am I going to serve today? Man, that is going to be a really mind-altering

grocery store experience, because you're going to start looking for ways to serve people. Maybe you help someone with a cart, or they drop something and you pick it up. Or you, you're helping them find something in the store. There's so many ways to serve people everywhere you go. It is nonstop. You can serve. I was down at the track today. We're in Santa Barbara, and I was doing some stadiums with Nancy this morning.

And there was this trash can with the trash that spilled completely. And I was doing sprints. And I saw this guy go over and start to pick up the trash. And my inclination was, go help him. Go serve him. Support him in picking up the trash. And that's the kind of thing you're looking for. You're looking for the onramps of service. And your inclination, you'll always have inclinations of serving other people. And a lot of times, we ignore them.

Because it's like, I could ignore the one this morning. It's like, I don't want to pick up trash. It was wet kind of trash. It was gross. And so actually, doing service doesn't always seem attractive. We've got to wire our minds to understand, again, that this is going to be the best life. This is going to be the greatest life is when we're serving.

You serve with the way God designed you. And then also to our core, we serve with love. Love is service. And that's why this mindset is so important. Being a servant of all is almost like saying, I'm going to love everybody. And love is not love if it is not given. It has to be given.

You can't just say, I love and there's no action. Love demands action. It requires it. If you get stuck, a good question to ask is, how can I demonstrate love in this situation? So if you're thinking, I don't know how to do this, just ask a different question. How can I demonstrate love in this situation? That will be an act of service.

And again, we live in a transactional culture. It's a transactional society. So you're going to stand out when you start just serving others. My habit, I think of someone, I text them. Someone comes to mind, I text them. And I do something encouraging. I'm thinking about you. Or Holy Spirit, give me a word to give them. And then I text that word of encouragement. And I'm hearing all the time, how did you know? How did you know to text?

It's almost like you're tapping into Holy Spirit's voice. And I think you could actually say he speaks in service language. He speaks in the language of love. His prompts for you going to be leaning into service. be And guys, keep working on these mindsets. What did you do last week with the mindset? How did you think about it every day? How did you practice it?

Man, this week you have this opportunity to take on this mindset, be a servant to all, and really get in the gym and exercise and do active reach. Really go for it. Journal about it. Be thankful about it. Think about all the different circumstances which you can serve. They are abundant. They are endless. as long as people are coming to your mind, as long as you're seeing people, the opportunity to serve them.

which is to love them, is present. And that is the abundant life. I got a journal prompt for you to help you on your journey. So here's the first one. Papa God, when you created me, what service to others were you thinking about? This is kind of hinging on the Ephesians 2.10 verse that he prepared good works for you to do in advance of when he created you. So Papa God.

When you created me, what kind of service? What's my specialty in serving others? Because remember, God designs you. He designed you to serve. The core of your design, everyone's common design is that we are equipped to serve others in some capacity. We are actually wired to love people. have natural talents to do that. So asking Papa God, you created me,

What service to others were you thinking about? That's a great question. A journal in the first person from and then Holy Spirit, give me power to transform the way I think about serving others. other words, you're asking him, I want to, I want to experience some mindset transformation. Holy Spirit, give me power to do that. Give me power to be in the gym. I want to rewire my brain to naturally be service oriented.

So that's a prayer. And then maybe journal from Holy Spirit. What are the ideas that you're getting from Him about ways that you can serve even in your day, your days this week or in the challenging things that you're going to experience? Everyone's experiencing challenges. It's just a matter of where they are, where you are on the planet, what you're doing. And I pray that these mindsets, pray, Holy Spirit, I pray that there would be power for the people who are listening who want to do this.

people who have decided to follow you, Jesus, I pray that the power of Holy Spirit would accompany them to transform the way they think. May the person who's listening to this prayer come into agreement alignment and be dosed with power to serve, to be a servant of all, and to actually live that mindset. Guys, it's such a pleasure to serve you in this podcast.

and I pray that this week would go amazingly well. Have a great week.
