O.K. starts the week out with Baseball & a recent win for the Colorado Rockies team, how the game ended in a walk off home run & what that even means for those of us less knowledgeable in how the sport rules work.

OK Solberg:

I wanna again welcome you to the four zero five Coffee Break. Guys, new week, get you a cup of coffee, glass of iced tea, tall, cool glass of lemonade, let's see what's happening in spring wheat. Hey, I called Chandelle herself in Harlem. It's going 32 per bushel, 14 pro, spring wheat. 550lb steer calf.

OK Solberg:

Well guys, they aren't moving right now. So I'll tell you this, a solid mouth cow with a calf at her side will bring you up to $4,100 A butcher hog in Iowa, I called Katie myself, Spencer, Iowa, 55ยข a pound. And 100lb fat lamb in Billings, I looked up online, pays Billings last week, 2 dollars and a nickel. But guys, there's more, much more. Bible verse bing, right out of the box.

OK Solberg:

But many that are first shall be last, and the last first. Mark 10 verse 31. Now, it seems a perfect verse to start out an episode about a last, a last place baseball team. The Colorado Rockies are in last place and, in fact, have one of the worst win loss record in Major League Baseball history this 2025 season. Few would believe that the following game would be their shining moment of the 2025 season.

OK Solberg:

Listen as I share word for word from the stadium broadcasters what they said just last Friday in Coors Field just three days ago. Listen, There is putting your foot on the gas, and then there's putting it full pedal to the metal, 21 pitches from the Rockies, 21 pitches, and not one out recorded. Five runs, six hits, a walk, and then the pirates give a grand slam, five to zero. The pirates lead the Rockies, yet still in the first inning and no outs, end of quote. As it was happening, guys, do you think any of the Rockies were thinking this game will be the highlight of our year?

OK Solberg:

Well, guys, that's the greatness of baseball. You can lose, and you can lose some more. And like the Rockies this year, you can hold an embarrassing 80 loss, 29 win record, and believe it or not, I saved you some grief because I failed to tell you that by the time the Rockies finally got the third out in the first inning, the score was nine to zero. Pirates prevailing. You've heard the term being behind the eight ball.

OK Solberg:

Well that fits the Colorado Rockies this year. Behind the eight ball, low man on the totem pole, simply at the bottom of the barrel. It hurts to say it, but they are bringing up the rear dead last. Oh, I gotta say it. They're sucking the hind tit.

OK Solberg:

Then last Friday, to be humiliated by a 9-0 deficit before they even come to bat, It truly did look like the fat lady was singing. But in baseball, you never say die. And the Colorado Rockies never gave up never gave up. Inning after inning, fighting to survive, There's no need to fear. Underdog is here, and they are a underdog.

OK Solberg:

It was 12 to five in the fourth inning. Then it was 15 to six at the middle of the fifth inning. Don't count them out. The Rockies made it 15 to 10 by the bottom of the fifth. Now you guys know where I'm going with this.

OK Solberg:

The Rockies never gave up. They refused to die. Going into the bottom of the 9th, it's 16 to 12. Pirates leading. Bottom of the 9th, 16-12. Pirates leading. Rockies have only one more chance to win. They keep fighting. And the Rockies win the game 17 to 16 with a walk off home run. A walk off home run.

OK Solberg:

It's the thing that dreams are made of. Everyone wants to say it, including me. It's a walk off home run. But for you out there that don't understand what that means, and there's a few they'll never admit it, but let me explain. We all understand there are nine innings in a baseball game.

OK Solberg:

The only way it goes into extra innings if it's tied at the bottom of the ninth. If it's tied, they go to the tenth inning and so on. But the home team, which in this case was the Rockies, they were playing at home in Coors Field. The home team is always up last, a huge home field advantage. The home team is always up at the bottom of the inning.

OK Solberg:

With this being the case, the only team that can hit a walk off home run is the home team. Since there are only nine innings in a regular game, the only way you go into the bottom of the ninth is if the home team is still behind or tied at the bottom of the ninth. So last Friday, it's the bottom of the ninth, Rockies at the plate, they are behind sixteen sixteen to 15. Is that right? No.

OK Solberg:

16 to 12. They score. They score again, and then hit a walk off home run. Why is it called a walk off home run? Because as soon as the runners cross the plate, the game is over.

OK Solberg:

It doesn't matter if they're one out, two outs, it's still over because the home team is ahead at the bottom of the ninth. What a game. What a story. That is one reason I love baseball. Even the underdog has a chance.

OK Solberg:

So until next time, as you go out there, remember now, don't be bitter.
