OK Solberg:

I wanna again welcome you to The 405 Coffee Break. Guys, cooled down a little bit yesterday. Today's gonna be even better. Get your cup of coffee, tall, cool glass of lemonade. Let's see what's happening out there.

OK Solberg:

Spring wheat $5.87 a bushel. A canner bull at PAYS weighing 2,245lbs and I wanna tell you this guys. That's a big bull, 2,245lbs at $2.22 a pound equates to $4,983 for a canner bull. It's gonna make a lot of hamburger. And a 100lb fat lamb in Billings $3.33 a pound. But guys, there's more much more.

OK Solberg:

Okay. It's July 14, my sister Evy's birthday. Happy birthday, Evy. Oh, and my uncle Art's birthday as well. Sit down and enjoy that birthday cake. And PS, it's also my cousin Dave Williams birthday. What about that then? Is that gooder or good? Well, then there now.

OK Solberg:

Today's episode is dedicated to my friend David Rummel. I call him Smoke, and he calls me Brimstone. Yeah. You know, Smoke & Brimstone should be a movie, I think. And you'd find it right under Thunderbolt and Lightfoot.

OK Solberg:

So anyway, Dave, Smoke Rummel went to the time and effort of designing me a notebook, small spiral notebook that fits inside your shirt pocket. You know the kind. Spiral on top. Come down to the office and see it sometime.

OK Solberg:

It's a treasure. Now here's how it happened. Dave remembers his dad telling about a man who used to be known for borrowing money from people around town. Right here, Malta, Montana. His name shall be Billy, Borrowing Billy.

OK Solberg:

Borrowing Billy is a nickname Dave coin for this man. Dave is also big into nicknames. If you follow me here, as I tell this story, you're gonna hear Fuzz and Bones and Digger, Chopper, Babesie, Biggers, and even Doc, as in Doc Curtis. If it's not a nickname, well, it won't be found in his book. So Dave set up an appointment with me, and I want you to know it was at least a 24 hour venture that Dave went through to give me this story.

OK Solberg:

He found a notebook. He penciled in Fuzz $5, Bones owed $5, Brimstone, that's me at $13, and Doc Curtis, well $2. If you remember Doc, he was hard pressed at loaning large amounts. The list includes 38 names. I kid you not, 38.

OK Solberg:

This wasn't a one minute storytelling project. This took some time. So when I was free last Thursday, Dave, he came into the office and I had one prompt from him. He said, Brimstone, when I walk in, ask, do you have the money you owe me? Simple enough.

OK Solberg:

So Smoke walks in. I say, hey, Smoke. Do you have the money you owe me? He said, yeah. You know, Brimstone, you caught me at a bad time.

OK Solberg:

Funds are a little little short right now. But he looks at me real serious like, but tell you what I'll do. And he slowly pulls a notebook from his shirt pocket and he opens it to the 1st page. Let's see. Where are you?

OK Solberg:

I keep track of all my debts. And he reads off Fuzz, Bones. Oh, you're somewhere here. He keeps looking Digger, Chopper, Babesie, Biggers, Doc Curtis. Oh, here you are, Brimstone. I I see I owe you $13. Well, I don't have it today, but here's what I'm I'm gonna do for you.

OK Solberg:

And he takes a stub pencil from behind his ear, real slow like, licks the point of the pencil, and carefully crosses off my name which was buried under 27 different names. I'm gonna move you to the top of the list. You'll be the first one I pay when the funds are available.

OK Solberg:

And he carefully writes in my name at the top of the list. I've told everyone I see that story and it only happened on Thursday. I said, Smoke, that's terrific. I didn't get a nickel yet. I still feel like a hero.

OK Solberg:

I'm #1 on the list. Oh, yeah, guys. It was a great happening. I don't care who you are. And the time and effort he put into this little project, Smoke, here's to you. I'm beholden to you eternally.

OK Solberg:

And guys, also notice I had the largest amount lent to Billy. Some were at $5, others at $10, doc at $2, but old Brimstone had loaned out a full $13. So now I'm doubly honored. I'm at the top of the list and I was the most generous of anyone on the list.

OK Solberg:

How can you not walk out feeling like a king? I'll close with a bible verse. No. No. Wait. Wait. 2 bible verses for the bible is not silent on this issue.

OK Solberg:

Exodus 22:25 If you lend money to any of my people, with you, whom is poor, you shall not be like a money lender to him, and you shall not exact interest from him. Again, Exodus 22 verse 25.

OK Solberg:

Then there's Psalm 37:21 The wicked borrows but does not pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives. Hey, he didn't pay me back, but he moved me to the top of the list. So I got that going for me, which is nice.

OK Solberg:

So until next time, as you go out there, remember now, don't be bitter.
