The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

Tonight marks the end of an era, as Prince Paolo is moving out of Korea, and we gotta find a new partner in crime on Tuesday nights. This was a hard show to do, and we both barely held it together...which honestly is normal, but we mean emotionally.

Show Notes

As broadcast March 15, 2022 with plenty of tears to fill your cup on this night of podcast finality.  Tonight we bid very fond adieus on the show for Tuesday nights, as we transmit Prince Paolo's final broadcast contributing to our Under The Radar indie and underground weekly soiree.  Paolo has been a stalwart on the show for the past three years and has been one of the very key contributors to making The Drop what it is here three years down the road.  Of course, when a couple of dudes cry around one another, they both gotta act like they're laughing, which we dutifully did.  Farewell, dear friend.  You will be missed.

PART 1 FACTS
BADBADNOTGOOD feat KAYTRANADA – Lavender
- On this date in 2017, President Donald Trump tweets about Snoop Dogg's "Lavender" video, where the rapper points a toy gun at "Ronald Klump," the ruler of a world run by clowns.
- As president, Trump has unleashed angry tweets at Saturday Night Live and Meryl Streep. His umbrage with Snoop gets the rapper trending, quickly sending the video over 6 million views.
Stefan Mahendra feat fika & Jackson Mathod – Is It Me?
- Following accolades from Jennifer Hudson and time spent touring with Olly Murs, one of London’s most in-demand R&B singers Stefan Mahendra releases his new single
- The track is taken from Stefan’s upcoming debut EP, which explores ‘the inherently unpredictable aspects of love’.
- Not sure when this EP is out, but the artist & fika previously released tear this love apart as the debut, which came out last month.
Goofy Geese – Flor Amorelo (Para Voce)
- Yellow flower for you is how that translates, but most likely is not truly pronounced that way.
- Goofy Geese is a Norwegian duo that has had some pretty decent success and streams in their short time out since about a year ago.
- Their bio simply reads “We want a peace of you.”
Kate Bollinger – Who Am I But Someone
- Our main girl from Charlottesville, VA is out with a big new EP announcement when this tune dropped last week.
- The Look At It In The Light EP is being released next month, and she previewed it a couple months ago with “Yards / Gardens.” Bollinger’s 2019 track “Candy” was sampled on the title track of Kanye West’s Donda last year.
ViVii – Wrap Your Arms
- One of our favorite indie exports that we’ve been paying attention to since 2018 is out with their latest single here, the second from their upcoming sophomore album due out later this spring.
- Their first album garnered over 15 million streams since release, so looking forward to this.
Widowspeak – The Drive
- The latest LP from the now Brooklyn-based duo originally out of Tacoma, WA is out as of Friday. The Jacket is the band’s 6th studio album, so go and check it out in full if you like what you hear up ahead, I know Prince Paolo & I have been hyping this album for a while.

PART 2 SONGS
Butter Bath – Anchor in the Clouds
Little Steed - Maybe I Faked It
BENEE – Hurt You Gus
Sunflower Bean - Roll The Dice
Wombo - Below The House
Atom Eyes - Building Blocks
PART 2 FACTS
Butter Bath – Anchor in the Clouds
- The super high calorie named Butter Bath is the moniker of Toby Anagnostis and he is an artist based in Sydney, Australia.
- His newest release, “Anchor in the Clouds” comes to us courtesy of Nice Guys. With the release of this new single came the announcement of his forthcoming sophomore EP.
- No official dates set yet but he is one of Australia’s fast-rising indie acts so I’m sure a lot of people are looking forward to that one for sure. About the song, he says that it is about one of his favorite musical festival memories. He wrote it last year and says that it is really just him moping about how much he misses kissing all his friends in a sweaty crowd.
Little Steed - Maybe I Faked It
- Little Steed is the moniker of Toronto-based musician Ryan Farley. More accurately, he says that Little Steed is an electronic focused solo side-project that features various guest vocalists.
- “Maybe I Faked It” is his newest single and it features the vocals of fellow Torontonian, Dani Nash.
- What they’ve created is a fun, upbeat, 80s inspired tune. I love this kind of stuff in general but Dani’s vocals really caught my ear. Great offering from Little Steed.
BENEE – Hurt You Gus
- Benee is an artist from New Zealand that I have been keeping an eye on for a while now. She just recently released her new EP. The EP is entitled Lychee, and I personally think that it is really, very good indeed.
- The EP is 7 tracks and each track is catchy and pretty upbeat. It’s definitely one of those EPs that leave you wanting more after it is done.
- I chose to play “Hurt You, Gus” for tonight’s show because I think it’s not to upbeat, and not to laid-back. As Goldilocks would say, this porridge is just right.
Sunflower Bean - Roll The Dice
- Sunflower Bean is a trio from New York City. “Roll the Dice” is the second single from their forthcoming new album, ‘Handful of Sugar’ which is set to land on May 6th via Lucky Number.
- The band says that this song is about money and how difficult it is to move up in the world. They say that most people don’t have any hope in this regard so many just take huge risks and roll the dice, hopefully to hit the jackpot.
- Even though this sounds a bit desperate, the band points out that there often isn’t much of a choice so why not just get out there and try to make it on your own terms.
Wombo - Below The House
- This is a really cool song, I’m really feeling this one a lot. It’s hard to describe it, it truly is a blend of genres. It’s got some hard rock, electronic, and jazz in there as well, and a whole lot of distortion.
- Wombo is a trio from Louisville and “Below the House” comes courtesy of Fire Talk.
- Singer and guitarist Sydney Chadwick says that the song is loosely based on a nightmare where the moral of the story was, sometimes, it is better to just leave things buried when there’s nothing to be gained from trying to make sense of things.
Atom Eyes - Building Blocks
- Atom Eyes is an Edinburgh-based future-soul and R&B collective and “Building Blocks” is their newest single.
- The track has some seriously good instrumentation and I do like frontwoman Lissa Chen Robertson’s vocals as well. She explains that this new song is kind of scientific.
- She read an article about building neural pathways in the brain by creating positive experiences and she wanted to create a song about that in relation to all the divisiveness going on in our world today. She hopes that we can all build safe, considerate, and inclusive conditions in society so that we can all have better experiences. Hard to argue with that.

PART 3 SONGS
The Blinders – Fight for It
Nilufer Yanya – The Dealer
Herbert Walker - Polar Pop
Coral Collapse – Graves
Kone Mara – Bubble
The Garbage & The Flowers - Eye Know Who You Are
PART 3 FACTS
The Blinders – Fight for It
- The Blinders is a band originally from Doncaster but who are now based in Manchester.
- “Fight for It” is their newest offering and it is the first song taken from their upcoming EP, Electric Kool-Aid (Part II) which is slated for release on May 13th.
- Band vocalist and guitarist Thomas Hayward says that the song is “about waking up and seizing the day with both your hands firmly gripped around its neck, to the point where you know you’re a better person by the end of it.”
- Kind of a violent image there but I think I know what he is talking about.
Nilufer Yanya – The Dealer
- Nilufer Yanya is an artist based in London. “The Dealer” is her new single and it is taken from her recently released full-length album, Painless.
- A couple of weeks back we played previous single, “Another Life”, which was great but I have to admit that I do like this new single, “The Dealer” a bit more. It is a bit more playful and relaxed and that’s what I like about it.
- About the song, she says that it is about life’s memories and how we often attach them to the seasons.
Herbert Walker - Polar Pop
- This is a really cool song that I missed last week. I had a listen to it again this week and decided that it was too good not to play this week.
- Herbert Walker is a band based in Arizona. The instrumentation is interesting and so are the lyrics. There are a lot of contrasting images and ideas in the lyrics and I guess that is why the song is called “Polar Pop”... well, come to think of it, it really should be bi-polar pop I guess.
- Anyway, it is a cleverly crafted song and I’ve been playing this one all week. Very good stuff from Herbert Walker.
Coral Collapse – Graves
- Coral Collapse is a dreampop band from New York. “Graves” is their latest cut and it is the first single from their new album. The new album is entitled “Symmetries” and it will be out this Friday via Admirable Traits Records.
- About the song, lead singer Kevin O’Connor says that if the song was a Tarot card, it would definitely be the Death Card because that can mean major change or alteration, rebirth, or actual, physical death.
- The reason being is that he says that he wrote the song from the perspective of a narrator who may or may not be dead. Kind of an interesting way to approach songwriting, and I think the result was pretty solid.
Kone Mara – Bubble
- Kone Mara is a trio from Sweden. Just last week, the band released this new song “Bubble” as well as the rest of their 5-track debut EP. The EP is called ‘Normad’, it is really good, you should all go and check it out.
- The idea behind this “Bubble” track is based on how many people resort to putting themselves in a metaphorical bubble as a means of escaping the harshness of life. It’s about creating a safe little world within your life to live in.
- The theme of the track is isolation. It’s been kind of a niche theme these past couple of years, hopefully there will be enough people out there who can relate.
The Garbage & The Flowers - Eye Know Who You Are
- The Garbage & The Flowers is a six-piece band from Australia and they have announced the coming of a new album. No official dates set yet, but we do know that the band’s previously released single, “Cinnamon Star” is the lead single and title track of that new album.
- Just a few days ago, the band released the second single, “Eye Know Who You Are” and that is what we have for you tonight on our humble playlist.
- This track has a classic grunge feel to it. Loud guitars and scratchy sounding vocals, I think it’s a great second offering and I’m looking forward to hearing more from The Garbage & The Flowers.
PART 4 SONGS
Nari – 7UP
Bathe Alone - Decades & Dreams
Young Guv - Couldnt Leave U If I Tried
Abby Ozard – Pisces
Kindsight - Queen Of Cowboys
Andrea & Mud - Hard Life
PART 4 FACTS
Nari – 7UP
- Nari is a young artist who is originally from the Bay Area but who is now based in Lexington, Kentucky where she is currently attending college.
- Her new track comes to us via Park the Van. “7UP” is the lead single from her forthcoming debut album, Greener on the Other Side. The album will also come via Park the Van, and it is scheduled for release later this year.
- Like the song title of her latest offering, the track is sweet and refreshing but it is actually about her problems with alcohol. In the song, she sings, “I can have fun without holding a drink” and that is one lesson that took me way too long to learn.
Bathe Alone - Decades & Dreams
- Bathe Alone is the moniker of Bailey Crone, a multi-instrumentalist and dream-pop musician based in Atlanta.
- She released her debut album last year. That album was called Last Looks and it was very well received. "Decades & Dreams” is her new single and with its release, she has announced that a follow up album is on the way. It will be entitled ‘Fall with the Lights Down’ and it will come via the Kansas City label, The Record machine.
- She says that the song was inspired by a photo of her great grandma sitting on a boat wearing a life vest. She says that it was hilarious because her great grandma was glaring directly at the camera and didn’t look to be having any fun at all.
Young Guv - Couldnt Leave U If I Tried
- Young Guv is a project fronted by Toronto based musician Ben Cook. Just last week he released his new album called GUV III, which comes to us via Run For Cover Records.
- There’s an interesting story behind the creation of the album. Before the pandemic hit, Young Guv was on their US tour. Then the pandemic officially set it and the band was stranded in New Mexico for a quite a while. During their forced locked down, Ben Cook wrote two albums worth of material and GUV III is the first of those albums.
- I think it is a very solid 11 track offering and I’m already looking forward to GUV IV, which will be out later this year.
Abby Ozard – Pisces
- Abby Ozard is a new fast-rising artist from Manchester. “Pisces” is her newest single and it is our first taste of her forthcoming new EP. The new EP is called ‘Water Based Lullabies’ and it is set to arrive on July 1st via House Anxiety.
- “Pisces” is about being a Pisces and Abby describes it as being a bad girl anthem. She says it is about recognizing your own strengths, taking control of what you really want and setting your standards high. She says that it is important to know your own worth and to surround yourself with people that make you feel amazing.
Kindsight - Queen Of Cowboys
- Kindsight is back on the show with an upbeat new track. “Queen of Cowboys” is taken from their very soon to be released debut album, “Swedish Punk”.
- I’ve been following the band for a while now so I’m very much looking forward to it. It will officially drop on the 25th and it will come via Rama Lama Records.
- Kindsight is a four-piece band from Denmark whose music is influenced by 80s and 90s alternative rock. This new single is musically, very cool, and the concept is pretty interesting as well. The song is about interacting with the general public and references the crazy advice and ideas you may overhear from strangers passing by.
Andrea & Mud - Hard Life
- Well Danno, it’s my last show here at Under the Radar Tuesday Night, so you know I had to sneak in one more song for Country Paolo.
- Andrea & Mud are a duo based in Atlanta and their new song is a heartfelt, sentimental kind of tune about life is just hard sometimes. I love the vocal duet going on in the song and I have to give props to Andrea for her singing saw skills.
- I’d also like to take this chance to thank you Danno and all our listeners for tuning in to the show on Tuesday, and every night. Under the Radar has meant a lot to me in my own life these past few years and I just want to thank you all for the love and support. It’s a hard life out there at times, but The Drop with Danno and the GFN family in general has made my life here in South Korea very sweet!
