They found that amber 1800 Kelvin LEDs can reduce insect attraction by 39 to 51% compared to high pressure sodium and cool white LEDs. That's significant because around 40% of insect species worldwide are thought to be in decline. Artificial lights, like those from streetlights, are one of the pressures they face. The study also noted that while amber LEDs are better, they still attract insects, so the real benefit depends on widespread adoption and habitat protection. There's a study from the State University of Campinas that focuses on the Pimentel Barbosa Indigenous Territory in northeastern Mato Grosso, Brazil. This area, which covers 329,000 hectares, has maintained its human occupation and vegetation cover largely unchanged for four decades. That's interesting, especially since the surrounding areas have shifted towards livestock ranching, soybean farming, and major highway construction. The territory was home to 2,369 people in 2022, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. A single photon carried quantum information over 24 kilometers of optical fiber, which was already busy with regular internet signals. That's a big deal, because it shows that quantum entanglement can coexist with everyday network traffic. The photon remained entangled with its partner at Northwestern's Evanston campus, proving that this technology can work in a practical setting. Researchers at the University of Chicago have made strides in quantum computing using non-abelian anions. They've demonstrated that braiding and fusing these particles can perform every operation a quantum computer needs. This means that, in theory, non-abelian anions could enable quantum computers to handle any computation, not just a narrow set of tasks. However, it's important to note that these particles are still at the theoretical and experimental stage. They haven't been reliably created or controlled at scale yet. Cornell University researchers have found that bees forage at a median distance of about 750 meters, which is well within the 6.4 kilometer buffer zone required by the USDA for organic honey certification. This is interesting, because strict rules have kept many U.S. beekeepers out of the organic honey market. The researchers suggest that these findings could help federal agencies consider easing some restrictions.
