Read Through The New Testament in just 8 weeks with the NLT Bible and Immerse: Messiah
QUICK START GUIDE
3 ways to get the most out of your experience
  1. Use Immerse: Messiah instead of your regular chapter-and-verse Bible. This special reader’s edition restores the Bible to its natural simplicity and beauty by removing chapter and verse numbers and other historical additions. Letters look like letters, songs look like
songs, and the original literary structures are visible in each book.
  2. Commit to making this a community experience. Immerse is designed for groups to encounter large portions of the Bible together
for 8 weeks—more like a book club, less like a Bible study. By meeting every week in small groups and discussing what you read in open, honest conversations, you and your community can come together to be transformed through an authentic experience with the Scriptures.
  3. Aim to understand the big story. Read through “The Stories and the Story” (p. 483) to see how the books of the Bible work together
to tell God’s story of his creation’s restoration. As you read through Immerse: Messiah, rather than ask, “How do I fit God into my busy life?” begin asking, “How can I join in God’s great plan by living out my part in his story?”
4 Questions to get your conversations started:
  1. What stood out to you this week?
  2. Was there anything confusing or troubling?
  3. Did anything make you think differently about God?
  4. How might this change the way we live?
Part of NLT Immerse: The Reading Bible, Complete Set, the Winner of the 2022 Christian Book Award for Bible of the Year!
Messiah is the first of six volumes of Immerse: The Bible Reading Experience program. Messiah takes the reader on a new and unique journey through every book of the New Testament. Each part of Messiah begins with one of the Gospels, and together combine to provide the reader with enjoyable and impactful readings all centered on Jesus. The end result is a Bible developed for the purpose of being read and understood, not referred to. Messiah is a new way to interact with God’s Word.
Messiah delivers Scripture to the reader as it was originally created: without chapter or verse breaks. While references are made available for ease of finding specific Scripture references, those references do not appear within the actual text of Scripture. This makes for uninterrupted reading of God’s Word. Created with the look and feel of a paperback book, and written using the Holy Bible, New Living Translation, the most readable translation available, Messiah enables you to easily read and understand the Bible.

What is Immerse: Messiah – 8 Week Bible Reading Experience?

Read (and listen!) through the New Testament in 8 weeks with your small group or on your own.

Immerse: Messiah is the first of six volumes in Immerse: The Bible Reading Experience. Messiah takes the reader on a unique journey through every book of the New Testament. Each section of Messiah begins with one of the Gospels, and together they combine to provide a life-changing reading experience centered on Jesus. This fresh arrangement of the books highlights the depth of the New Testament’s fourfold witness to Jesus the Messiah. The Son of God, who fulfills all the longings and promises of the collected Scriptures, can be experienced in Messiah through the rich variety of lenses provided by the books of the new covenant.

The Immerse Bible Series is the proud winner of the prestigious Bible of the Year award from the ECPA Christian Book Awards. You’ll have a great experience using Immerse by yourself. But for an even richer experience, try reading with friends.

Immerse: The Bible Reading Experience is an invitation to a different kind of community interaction with the Bible. Less like a Bible study, more like a book club.

- 8 or 16-week Bible listening plans take you through a large section of the Bible like the New Testament or the Torah
- Meet once a week for a free-flowing discussion about the text
- Wrestle with questions and celebrate ‘aha!’ moments together

Nothing impacts spiritual growth more than spending time in Scripture. Immerse removes many of the barriers that make Bible reading difficult and invites communities to become transformed together through the power of God’s word.

Immerse Messiah 37
===

Rick Warren: [00:00:00] Welcome to Immerse Messiah Reading for Week 8, Day 37.

Immersed in 1 John. The letter known as 1 John was written to a group of believers in crisis. False teachers had begun preaching that Jesus was not the Messiah and claimed their teaching was based on a revelation from the Spirit of God. Many followers of Jesus began believing these teachers, and the community was being torn apart.

In response, John wrote a letter to all of the churches in the community. As in the Gospel of John, the author doesn't state his name in this letter. But tradition ascribes it to the Apostle John, and much evidence in the letter supports it. John urges the remaining believers to stay faithful to what they had been taught from the beginning.

He combats the claims that the false teachers were making, showing [00:01:00] how their lives discredited their own message. John reassures the faithful believers, The Holy One has given you His Spirit, and all of you know the truth. One thing the false teachers denied was that Jesus Christ came in a real body.

Like many people in the first century who were influenced by Greek philosophy, they thought that spiritual things were good, but physical things were bad. They believed that if Jesus had really been the Son of God, He could never have come to earth in a physical body. But John offers eyewitness testimony that Jesus was both genuinely human and the Messiah sent by God.

John warns the recipients of his letters who test all those who claim to speak by the Spirit. If they deny these basic truths about Jesus, then they are false prophets and are following the spirit of the Antichrist. Which John says is already present in the world. John adds that the [00:02:00] people who are leaving the community of faith are also discredited by the way they live.

For one thing, they are living impure lives. Possibly because they now believe that whatever they do in their physical bodies doesn't affect their spiritual condition. The false teachers and their followers also lacked Christ like compassion for the poor and suffering. They didn't care about the practical needs of others.

The true path had been taught and shown by Jesus. Those who claim to know and love God will obey his commands. They will faithfully live in the light and love of the Messiah's way. It can be somewhat difficult to track John's pattern of thought in this letter, as he seems to move back and forth between ideas.

He sometimes raises a topic briefly, then shifts to another thought, followed by a return to the previous topic. However, both his desire to maintain the integrity of the gospel message and his attentiveness to [00:03:00] living in the light permeate the entire letter. He summarizes his entire message at the end of the letter this way, and we know that the Son of God has come.

And He has given us understanding so that we can know the true God. And now we live in fellowship with the true God because we live in fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ.

The letter of 1 John. We proclaim to you the One who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw Him with our own eyes and touched Him with our own hands. He is the Word of life. This One who is life itself was revealed to us. And we have seen Him, and now we testify and proclaim to you that He is the One who is eternal life.

He was with the [00:04:00] Father, and then He was revealed to us. We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard, so that you may have fellowship with us, and our fellowship We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy. This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you.

God is light and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God, but go on living in spiritual darkness. We are not practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other. And the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin.

If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves, and not living in the truth. [00:05:00] But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all wickedness. If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar. And showing that His Word has no place in our hearts.

My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the One who is truly righteous. He Himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins. And not only our sins. But the sins of all the world.

And we can be sure that we know Him if we obey His commandments. If someone claims, I know God, but doesn't obey God's commandments, that person is a liar and is not living in the truth. But those who [00:06:00] obey God's Word truly show how completely they love Him. That is how we know we are living in Him. Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.

Dear friends, I'm not writing a new commandment for you. Rather, it is an old one you have had from the very beginning. This old commandment, to love one another, is the same message you heard before. Yet, it is also new. Jesus lived the truth of this commandment. And you also are living it, for the darkness is disappearing, and the true light is already shining.

If anyone claims, I am living in the light, but hates a fellow believer, that person is still living in darkness. Anyone who loves a fellow believer is living in the light, and does not cause others to stumble. But anyone who hates a fellow believer [00:07:00] Is still living and walking in darkness. Such a person does not know the way to go, having been blinded by the darkness.

I am writing to you who are God's children. Because your sins have been forgiven through Jesus. I am writing to you who are mature in the faith, because you know Christ, who existed from the beginning. I am writing to you who are young in the faith, because you have won your battle with the evil one. I have written to you who are God's children, because you know the Father.

I have written to you who are mature in the faith, because you know Christ, who existed from the beginning. I have written to you who are young in the faith, because Because you are strong. God's Word lives in your hearts, and you have won your battle with the evil one. Do not love this world, nor the things it offers you.

For when you love the world, You do not have the love of the Father [00:08:00] in you, for the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world, and this world is fading away. Along with everything that people crave, but anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.

Dear children, the last hour is here. You have heard that the Antichrist is coming, and already many such Antichrists have appeared. From this we know that the last hour has come. These people left our churches, but they never really belonged with us. Otherwise, they would have stayed with us. When they left, it proved that they did not belong with us.

But you are not like that, for the Holy One has given you His Spirit, and all of you know the truth. So I am [00:09:00] writing to you, not because you don't know the truth, but because you know the difference between truth and lies. And who is a liar? Anyone who says that Jesus is not the Christ. Anyone who denies the Father and the Son is an antichrist.

Anyone who denies the Son doesn't have the Father either. But anyone who acknowledges the Son has the Father also. So you must remain faithful to what you have been taught from the beginning. If you do, you will remain in fellowship with the Son and with the Father. And in this fellowship, We enjoy the eternal life He promised us.

I'm writing these things to warn you about those who want to lead you astray. But you have received the Holy Spirit, and He lives within you, so you don't need anyone to teach you what is true. For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what He teaches is true. [00:10:00] It is not a lie. So just as He has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ.

And now, dear children, remain in fellowship with Christ, so that when He returns, you will be full of courage and not shrink back from Him in shame, since we know that Christ is righteous. We also know that all who do what is right are God's children. See how very much our Father loves us, for He calls us His children, and that is what we are.

But the people who belong to this world don't recognize that we are God's children, because they don't know Him. Dear friends, we are already God's children, but He has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He really is.

And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves [00:11:00] pure, just as He is pure. Everyone who sins is breaking God's law, for all sin is contrary to the law of God. And you know that Jesus came to take away our sins. And there is no sin in him. Anyone who continues to live in him will not sin. But anyone who keeps on sinning does not know him or understand who he is.

Dear children, don't let anyone deceive you about this. When people do what is right, it shows that they are righteous, even as Christ is righteous. But when people keep on sinning, it shows that they belong to the devil. Who has been sinning since the beginning, but the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil.

Those who have been born into God's family do not make a practice of sinning, because God's life is in them. So they can't keep on sinning, because they are children of God. [00:12:00] So now, we can tell who are children of God and who are children of the devil. Anyone who does not live righteously and does not love other believers, Does not belong to God.

This is the message you have heard from the beginning. We should love one another. We must not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and killed his brother. And why did he kill him? Because Cain had been doing what was evil, and his brother had been doing what was righteous. So, don't be surprised, dear brothers and sisters, if the world hates you.

If we love our brothers and sisters who are believers, it proves that we have passed from death to life. But a person who has no love is still dead. Anyone who hates another brother or sister is really a murderer at heart. And you know that murderers don't have eternal life within [00:13:00] them. We know what real love is, because Jesus gave up his life for us.

So, we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters. If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion, how can God's love be in that person? Dear children, let's not merely say that we love each other. Let us show the truth by our actions.

Our actions will show that we belong to the truth. So we will be confident when we stand before God. Even if we feel guilty, God is greater than our feelings. And He knows everything. Dear friends, if we don't feel guilty, we can come to God with bold confidence. And we will receive from Him whatever we ask.

Because we obey Him and do the things that please Him. [00:14:00] And this is His commandment. We must believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ. Love one another just as he commanded us. Those who obey God's commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them, and we know he lives in us because the spirit he gave us lives in us.

Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world. This is how we know if they have the Spirit of God. If a person claiming to be a prophet acknowledges that Jesus Christ came in a real body, that person has the Spirit of God.

But if someone claims to be a prophet and does not acknowledge the truth about Jesus. That person is not from God. Such a person has the spirit of the Antichrist, [00:15:00] which you heard is coming into the world, and indeed is already here. But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.

Those people belong to this world, so they speak from the world's viewpoint, and the world listens to them. But we belong to God, and those who know God listen to us. If they do not belong to God, they do not listen to us. That is how we know if someone has the spirit of truth or the spirit of deception.

Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God, but anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love. God showed how much He loved us by [00:16:00] sending His one and only Son into the world, so that we might have eternal life through Him.

This is real love. Not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. No one has ever seen God, but if we love each other, God lives in us, and His love is brought to full expression in us, and God has given us His Spirit as proof that we live in Him and He in us.

Furthermore, we have seen with our own eyes, and now testify, that the Father sent His Son to be the Savior of the world. All who declare that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God. We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust [00:17:00] in His love. God is love, and all who live in love Live in God, and God lives in them.

And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face Him with confidence. Because we live like Jesus here in this world, such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced His perfect love.

We love each other because He loved us first. If someone says, I love God, But hates a fellow believer that person is a liar for if we don't love people we can see, how can we love God whom we cannot see? And he has given us this command. Those who love God must [00:18:00] also love their fellow believers. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has become a child of God.

And everyone who loves the Father loves his children too. We know we love God's children if we love God and obey his commandments. Loving God means keeping His commandments, and His commandments are not burdensome. For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith.

And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God. And Jesus Christ was revealed as God's Son by His baptism in water, and by shedding His blood on the cross. Not by water only, but by water and blood. And the Spirit, who is truth, confirms it with His testimony.

So we have these three witnesses, the Spirit, the water, and the [00:19:00] blood. And all three agree. Since we believe human testimony, surely we can believe the greater testimony that comes from God. And God has testified about His Son. All who believe in the Son of God know in their hearts that this testimony is true.

Those who don't believe this are actually calling God a liar because they don't believe what God has testified about His Son. And this is what God has testified. He has given us eternal life. And this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life. Whoever does not have God's Son does not have life. I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life.

And we are confident that He hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases Him. And since we know He hears us when we make our [00:20:00] requests, we also know that He will give us what we ask for. If you see a fellow believer sinning in a way that does not lead to death, you should pray, and God will give that person life.

But there is a sin that leads to death. And I am not saying you should pray for those who commit it. All wicked actions are sin, but not every sin leads to death. We know that God's children do not make a practice of sinning, for God's Son holds them securely, and the evil one cannot touch them. We know that we are children of God and that the world around us

And we know that the Son of God has come and he has given us understanding so that we can know the true God and now we live in fellowship with the true God because we live in fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ. He is the only [00:21:00] true God and he is eternal life. Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God's place in your hearts.

Immersed in 2nd and 3rd John, traveling teachers often visited the communities of Jesus followers throughout the Roman world. But some of these teachers brought a different message about Jesus than was originally shared. They taught that he hadn't come to earth in a real body. As a result, some churches were now refusing to receive the teachers who taught the true message about Jesus.

John responds to these issues by writing two brief letters to the churches in the same area as those addressed in the letter known as 1 [00:22:00] John. The author refers to himself as the Elder. However, it's clear from the language, style, and themes that the author is the same as the author of the Gospel of John and 1 John, traditionally identified as John the Apostle.

In the letter known as 2 John, the Apostle addresses a lady and her children. Most likely referring metaphorically to one of the churches and the believers in it. John has just received a visit from some of them and is delighted to learn that they are faithfully following the truth of the gospel. But apparently, they also reported that certain false teachers had arrived, expecting to receive lodging, meals, and perhaps even funds to get them to their next destination.

John strictly warns the church not to support or encourage those who do not teach accurately about Christ. The letter known as Third John is addressed to a man named Gaius. Presumably in a [00:23:00] different church, who had recently hosted some of the true teachers in his home. Those teachers reported this to John, who writes to thank Gaius and encourage him to continue doing this good work.

Unfortunately, a leader named Diotrephes is refusing to host the true teachers and is forcing anyone who supports them to leave the church. John urges Gaius not to let this bad example influence him, but rather to continue showing hospitality to those faithful traveling teachers. In both letters, John expresses his hope to see the recipients soon.

Even though John has much more to say, these letters are brief because he wants to share his message in person. He's doing all he can to ensure that the resources of the churches go to support only those who are following the truth.

The letter of 2 John. This [00:24:00] letter is from John, the elder. I'm writing to the chosen lady and to her children, whom I love in the truth, as does everyone else who knows the truth, because the truth lives in us. And will be with us forever. Grace, mercy and peace which come from God the Father, and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, will continue to be with us who live in truth and love.

How happy I was to meet some of your children and find them living according to the truth, just as the father commanded. I'm writing to remind you, dear friends, that we should love one another. This is not a new commandment, but one we have had from the beginning. Love means doing what God has commanded us, and He has commanded us to love one another, just as you heard from the beginning.

I say this because many deceivers have gone out into the world. They [00:25:00] deny that Jesus Christ came in a real body. Such a person is a deceiver and an antichrist. Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked so hard to achieve. Be diligent so that you receive your full reward. Anyone who wanders away from this teaching has no relationship with God, but anyone who remains in the teaching of Christ has a relationship with both the Father and the Son.

If anyone comes to your meeting and does not teach the truth about Christ, don't invite that person into your home or give any kind of encouragement. Anyone who encourages such people becomes a partner in their evil work. I have much more to say to you. But I don't want to do it with paper and ink, for I hope to visit you soon and talk with you face to face.

Then our joy will be complete. Greetings from the children of your sister, chosen by [00:26:00] God.

The letter of 3rd John. This letter is from John, the elder. I'm writing to Gaius, my dear friend, whom I love in the truth. Dear friend, I hope all is well with you, and that you are as healthy in body as you are strong in spirit. Some of the traveling teachers recently returned and made me very happy by telling me about your faithfulness.

And that you are living according to the truth, I could have no greater joy than to hear that my children are following the truth. Dear friend, you are being faithful to God when you care for the traveling teachers who pass through. Even though they are strangers to you, they have [00:27:00] told the church here of your loving friendship.

Please continue providing for such teachers in a manner that pleases God, for they are traveling for the Lord and they accept nothing from people who are not believers. So we ourselves should support them so that we can be their partners as they teach the truth. I wrote to the church about this, but Diotrephes, who loves to be the leader, refuses to have anything to do with us.

When I come, I will report some of the things he is doing and the evil accusations he is making against us. Not only does he refuse to welcome the traveling teachers, he also tells others not to help them. And when they do help, he puts them out of the church. Dear friend, don't let this bad example influence you.

Follow only what is good. Remember that those who do good prove that they are God's children, and those who do evil prove that they do not know God. [00:28:00] Everyone speaks highly of Demetrius, as does the truth itself. We ourselves can say the same for him, and you know we speak the truth. I have much more to say to you, but I don't want to write it with pen and ink, for I hope to see you soon, and then we will talk face to face.

Peace be with you. Your friends here send you their greetings. Please give my personal greetings to each of our friends there.

This concludes today's Immerse Reading Experience. Thank you for joining us.
