Good morning and welcome. Today, we begin the portion of Shmini, focusing on the significance of the eighth day following the seven days of consecration. This eighth day, Rosh Chodesh Nisan, marks a monumental occasion—the dedication of the Tabernacle. Moses calls upon Aaron and the elders, emphasizing that Aaron's role as high priest is divinely appointed, ensuring no one sees it otherwise.
The number eight represents transcendence, a gateway to otherworldliness beyond our natural seven-day cycle. This is evident in various aspects of Jewish life, like circumcision and the eighth day of Sukkot. The offerings initiated on this day symbolize atonement for the sin of the golden calf, highlighting forgiveness for Aaron’s role in that transgression.
As Aaron approaches the altar, he displays humility and hesitance, reflecting his inner struggle. Yet, he follows God’s commands precisely, ensuring that the divine presence would dwell among the people. This portion teaches us about redemption, humility, and the importance of following divine guidance, which ultimately brings God closer to us.
