The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

We start by remembering the burial of one of the most ridiculous urban myths of all time, then go into the new stuff for the week along with big pop tunes in our 2nd hour Popcast with Aline.

Show Notes

As broadcast on November 8, 2021 with extra rumors for your podcast millage.  Tonight we mark when Newsweek FINALLY ended the "Paul Is Dead" rumor in 1969 when they visited him on a farm in Scotland.  What a bunch of hype.  However, Paul did reveal that The Beatles were done in the interview, which was definitely something.  Onwards after our opener, we explore all the big new tunes & albums just out this weekend, with great debut LP's out from Hana Vu & MUNYA, along with Radiohead's "Kid A Mnesia" and a fantastic collab LP from Joan As Police Woman with the late, great Tony Allen and Dave Okumu.  For our 2nd hour Aline Verduyn takes us through some excellent new singles out over the past week plus with tunes from Hozier, Alicia Keys, Jessie Ware, and many other big names.

It is 20 hours past midnight on this November rainy kinda Monday, but we got plenty of new muses to chase away the blueses tonight as we do every week. And this particular 24 hour in spacetime is duly noted as November 8, 2021. This is Danno of course, not making it rain so don’t blame it on me, ready to begin a new week of jams from studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Second hour Aline Verduyn is once again on the air with us for our Popcast feature, and we have great new tunes and stuff you might have slept on for our full two hours. Here in our first hour, lots of femme power in the new cuts just out with MUNYA, Hana Vu, Tasha and many more headlining the bill especially in part 1 along with the likes of Foals, Radiohead & Vansire to let the other side of the coin strut its stuff. However, before we get to any of that, we note a rather strange chapter in music history coming to a close, as the rumors of Paul McCartney’s demise finally came to a halt as of yesterday, but we’ll talk more about this weird bit of music rumor histrionics side opposite the opening sonics. THIS is The Drop.
Lord Huron – Not Dead Yet
The Drop commences things for our new music Monday showcase for the coming week. Danno here, how ya doin? What’s going on? Hope you had a great week and that you got out because this weekend was extra choice weather wise, and we thank you for being here with us tonight.
We just commenced things with our TIGHT (or) feature for this evening’s programming, that was Lord Huron with a cut called Not Dead Yet. And that is because yesterday in 1969 on the cover of Newsweek, the headline was Paul’s Still With Us. The news magazine had tracked him down at his farm in Scotland and put him on the cover with his family.

But why? Well, the rumor that Paul McCartney had died started in 1966 and became an urban legend, never quite dying down, especially after American college students got hold of it later in 1969. According to the theory, McCartney died in a car crash and to spare the public from grief, the surviving Beatles replaced him with the winner of a McCartney look-alike contest, sometimes identified as "William Campbell" or "Billy Shears". Afterwards, the band left messages in their music and album artwork to communicate the truth to their fans. These include the 1968 song "Glass Onion", in which Lennon sings "here's another clue for you all / the walrus was Paul", and the cover photo of their album Abbey Road, in which McCartney is shown barefoot and walking out of step with his bandmates.

So finally, Paul granted an interview to Newsweek and did drop the bombshell that the band, and not he, was finished, which only insiders knew at the time. Paul’s only request to the news media in the article was "Can you spread it around that I am just an ordinary person and want to live in peace?"

Rather ironic fast forwarding 52 years that Paul is one of the last surviving members with Ringo, and CERTAINLY the most active musician.

So now that we have the monocle-wearing portion of the show out of the way, let’s get to the new stuff for this week, and up next we have Frances Forever, Hana Vu, and MUNYA to give their closeups and we’ll talk about all three after the shoot. THIS is The Drop on your new Muses Monday night.
__________
The Drop returns after our first femme power triumvirate of the night as we begun to unwrap the proverbial cellophane on the new tunes for this week. Danno here as I am always on GFN between 8 & 10, and it is Monday night and you cannot avoid the new cuts, with the lovely & talented Aline Verduyn augmenting my own sardonic take on the shiny new biz with our Popcast coming up in hour 2. For now through, we go to the recap, that was...
Frances Forever – Certified Fool (…for those unfamiliar, this is the solo project of Boston’s Frances Garrett, whose Space Girl went completely viral last year. This single is the first to drop since her debut EP Paranoid Party dropped earlier this year, and she’s heading out on tour with Misterwives as well.)
Hana Vu – Aubade (…the LA-based artist is officially out with her debut album for dance label Ghostly International as of Friday. The album is called Public Storage and is available everywhere now, and she says of this tune pointedly for a guy born on Friday, “It’s about the collective misery and depressive introspection one experiences on their birthday, which in this era of being alone, can feel infinite.”)
MUNYA – Voyage (…another debut LP that is out as of Friday is Voyage To Mars. Interestingly, the artist notes that it is inspired by a young fascination with the stars in the sky, and if you were out in the Korean countryside this weekend, you would have seen a tremendous light show in the night sky. Voyage To Mars by MUNYA is available everywhere now.)
Now spacey & floating to the end of the first quarter tonight, we’re gonna need to get shaken up and bit and luckily Foals is out with a new cut called Wake Me Up, and then we have another UK artist in Alfie Templeman who’s dropped another single called 3D Feelings, and these should definitely give you a shot of audio caffeine to end the first fourth of the program tonight. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday.
Foals – Wake Me Up
Alfie Templeman – 3D Feelings

II
The Drop recommissions after the first jump of the night tonight. Big weekend of album drops and new tunes, so we’re going through one of the aforementioned to start. Hope all is well with you, Drop Gangsters (KOR)? Danno here doing the usual unusual here on the Korean airwaves, and Aline will join us for another hour of The Popcast after 9pm tonight. Let’s get to the liner notes on those first couple of longer players though...
Radiohead – Follow Me Around (…Kid A Mnesia is officially out as of Friday. For those not in the know, Thom Yorke & company put together both their iconic Kid A & Amnesia albums at the same studio sessions but released them a year apart in 2000 & 2001 respectively. For big fans of the band and these two albums, this is fascinating listening, available everywhere now.)
Alt-j – Get Better (…this is the latest single from the indie trio’s upcoming album The Dream, and they are truly channeling some inner Bon Iver on this, their most pensive & emotive track to date. The Dream comes out February 11 of next year, so do keep an eye out.)

More new tunes lie ahead, with Chicago’s very own heroine of the mic & the community with Tasha leading the way, then we have a pair of cuts from Vansire & Kid Bloom. Naturally, we’ll talk about em after they balloon to space & return but for now it’s time to listen. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday night.
___________
Back on The Drop tonight and into the final blah blah blahs of the first 57 this evening. How’s it going, Drop Gangsters (KOR)? Danno here ready to welcome Aline for our weekly Popcast sesh in just a bit after we have the PSA’s flip the radio pancake into part 3, and we have tons of new stuff to discuss then. However, for right now, it’s time to talk about that last trio of trusty tunes…
Tasha – Dream Still (…the Chicago-based artist is out with a fantastic LP as of Friday called Tell Me What You Miss The Most, featured by NPR’s All Songs Considered in their weekly breakdown of the best albums out November 5. Do check if you liked that tune, tremendous stuff very worthy of a full listen front-to-back.)
Vansire – Just The Right Song (…the duo out of Rochester, MN is out with their latest single as of last Friday. For those not in the know but want more, check out their seven song EP from last year called After Fillmore County.)
Kid Bloom – Like I Never Left (…this is the moniker of LA-based multi-instrumentalist & singer-songwriter Lennon Kloser, and curious to know whether this is the start of a larger reveal as he’s only put out standalones since his A Long Kiss Goodbye from 2017, but remains very popular with almost a million devoted monthly listeners.)

Now, we’re getting pretty close to halftime but we got time to inject one more tune from a very important album just out Friday. Joan Wasser aka Joan As Police Woman is out with a collab album featuring the late Tony Allen & Dave Okumu and we’ll rock a tune off this lovely LP called Get My Bearings, which will take us into the break and features Damon Albarn as well. THIS is The Drop on your New Muses Monday at the half.
