Like a master surveyor, Jesus gives us clear directions to find a fulfilling, purpose-filled relationship with Himself - a map to the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Charted is a daily devotional written by the junior class at Fountainview Academy (Class of 2019). Based on the book Steps to Christ, this book explores the path to the Originator and Provider of Genuine Joy. We don't have to be confused about the way. The certainty is in the journey: divinely Charted.
There are those who profess to serve God, while they rely upon their own
efforts to obey His law, to form a right character, and secure salvation.
Their hearts are not moved by any deep sense of the love of Christ, but
they seek to perform the duties of the Christian life as that which God
requires of them in order to gain heaven. – Steps to Christ, pg. 44
The lunch line was getting shorter. Finally, dessert would make
its way in my direction. Maybe there’ll be cookies! Or brownies, or
ice-cream? At last, the table was in sight. One delectable item caught
my attention—cake. But not just any cake; it was everyone’s all-time
favourite: chocolate cake! The other treats seemed simple, sad, and
sloppy in comparison to this guarantee of satisfaction. I seized my
prize like a proud pirate and made my way to the picnic table to devour
my treasure.
I held up my plate, admiring the delicacy and technique
that had been necessary to create such a beauty. I lifted my fork
with glorious triumph; I could almost taste the smooth velvet of pure
chocolatey goodness. As I proceeded to take a bite, my expression
changed as fast as a mimic octopus changes its shape. All my hopes,
my expectations, shattered in one mere moment.
It was carob.
My friends glared at me with a look of bewilderment; they
clearly did not understand the enormity of the situation. To them, this
disgusting misunderstanding was petty and of little importance, but
to me, it was a transgression I would find difficult to forgive. This one
bite of deception had weakened my trust and confidence in the once
promising dessert table.
The carob cake that had so clearly deceived me reminds me
of the sweet frosted appearance with which so many Christians are
frosted. To be honest, not all of us who profess to know Christ are
truthful, and many of us are successful in deceiving others—even
ourselves. Eventually, the true flavour of my character will be revealed
and when that happens, I want to be an honest delight.
