I.
It is 20 hours past midnight and it is still bitter cold here in Juville on this Thursday night, but we definitely got some new heat to warm you up tonight in both hours for our Sampled & AMPED funk punk soul rock fourth day soiree, with tonight’s glowing coles warmed into eternity as January 13, 2022. This is Danno come what may from studio 2 GFN HQ located in downtown Gwangju, how do you do? Since it’s Thursday, that means that our Sampled first hour foray into the funkier realms is in full effect from now until we hit the top of the clock again, and as always as ever Dan Lloyd is in the house to take us through the new rock just out this week, so as always lots to do for your Thursday night programming this evening. So, as to the rather new stuff we just discovered, let’s get right out of the gates with a bit of a James Brown edit of his Sex Machine original, and we got plenty to talk about after Stro Elliott lets us hear what he’s done. THIS is The Drop.
Stro Elliot feat James Brown – Machine No Make Sex
Back on The Drop, ready to rock for tonight’s billing. Danno here, studio 2, GFN HQ in downtown Gwangju. First week of new releases is in the books for 2022, a little light on the new stuff in the funk & soul realms, but there is a good amount to go through here in our Sampled funk & soul first hour. Dan Lloyd as always will be in the house for our AMPED rock feature this evening, and he has a bevvy of new tunes in tow for the 2nd hour.

For right now, we just heard the Stro Elliott edit of James Brown’s Sex Machine called funnily enough Machine No Make Sex. For those unaware, Elliot is a member of the Legendary Roots Crew, and of course I should note that Brown’s original was called Get Up I Feel Like Being A Sex Machine, released on the double album Sex Machine in 1970.

Stro Elliot is putting out a new remixes album featuring the Godfather of Soul and so very much more beyond that, it must be noted. The album is called Black & Loud: James Brown Reimagined by Stro Elliot, which drops in full on February 4.
This was the first single, released very late in the year on December 17. Should be an interesting compilation, and good to see the Godfather getting some love.

#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.

Now that we got that bit of shamelessness outta the way, let’s get to some more funky biz tonight. Up next we have Mashup & Cozy Condition to be followed by Let Your Hair Down and the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, all of which we’ll talk a bit about side opposite the sonics. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday night.
______
The Drop returns for the final yaddas of the first quarter tonight. Danno here, keeping things in disheveled but discernable order on our Sampled funk & soul Thursday first hour, going through some of the new boogie for the week, and as always we’re glad to have you with us tonight. Dan Lloyd will join us in hour two for our AMPED rock feature as well, and a good week in new rock it must be noted so stay locked for that. Right now, we just explored a few recent joints to start the gig properly, so let’s get to the dynamics…
Mashup & Cozy Condition – Fly Wizard Fly (…this is a band out of Richmond, VA in the US and is the 2nd single to the band’s upcoming full length album. Some pretty accomplished artists in the accompaniment with bass wizard Keith Horne (Peter Frampton), world class drummer Corey Fonville (Butcher Brown), keyboardist Daniel Clarke(Ryan Adams), and five more of Richmond's most accomplished musicians.)
Let Your Hair Down – Pizza Pie (…another awesome Aussie funk & soul band outta Australia on the College of Knowledge label roster. A bit of a slept on cut right here, released on the Waiting Room LP in September. College of Knowledge, big up to the fam down there doing some great stuff.)
Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio – Don’t Worry ‘Bout What I Do (…DL03 as you might know them from the internet are back with a new LP called Cold As Weiss this year. The trio out of Seattle will release the LP on February, and of course with them being just an instrumental band, they’re sending a bit of a message with the album title, as Dan Weiss is the new drummer with the crew. This tune along with “Pull Your Pants” up were put out simultaneously January 7, and the other tune is also a message to guitarist Jimmy James, whose pantelones elevation seems to be lacking to other members of the group.)
Now, quickly approaching the jump to part 2 presently, but we still got a couple more joints to let fly into space. On deck is a block of cuts from Band of Pockets featuring the vocals of Yona Marie, with the first cut being their most recent in Mayday, We’re Going Down, released on Jan 3. Then we have the same band with an older cut called (Dance) I Wanna Do It, and that’s gonna be it for the first fourth this evening. THIS is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday night.

II
The Drop recommissions and we are officially into the 2nd stanza of tonight’s radiological orchestra. Danno here, you know…doin my thing nightly on GFN between 8 & 10. Going through the funk & soul stuff presently for our Sampled feature, then it’s time to get AMPED with Dan Lloyd and check out some new rock in parts 3 & 4 tonight. As to what we just cold opened with, let’s get to the details…
Fancy Hagood & Devon Gilfillian – Let Me Be (…this is such a quality tune from two very good artists, released as a standalone single. Deservedly, this was featured as Apple Music’s song of the day in the post Christmas haze of December 27. For those not familiar, Fancy Hagood t/n Jake grew up in Arkansas and taught himself piano at as a teenager, and he’s been releasing music since about 2015 professionally. Devon Gilfillian has a similar profile but grew up in Pennsylvania, now based in Nashville. Definitely two young cats to watch out for, both do great stuff.)
Maggie Rose – I Feel The Earth Move (…another great singer based in Nashville on the rise over the past couple of years is this artist, who regularly tips the cap to her favorite inspirations in a variety of genres, and this came out a standalone after she released her 2021 album Have A Seat, a nod to one of her biggest inspirations in Carole King.)
#9870, @gfnthedrop, pod.
So, moving ever forward even if somewhat slowly, we have one more new-ish discovery to unearth on the air in Boulevards, then we have a couple of 2019 favorites from Ghost Funk Orchestra and Bobby Oroza, and we’ll talk about all there is to know about side opposite the audio roundabouts. This is The Drop on your Sampled funk & soul Thursday.
___
The Drop gets back at it on the spit for our final round of verbals prior to halftime. Danno here, nothing fancy, just funky, doing my weekly Sampled funk & soul first hour prior to Dan Lloyd joining us here in studio 2 for our AMPED rock feature for this week. Let’s run down that last triforce of tunage so you know at least a little bit about it…
Boulevards feat Nikki Lane – Better Off Dead (…this is the moniker of Jamil Rashad, a leading single to his upcoming album and tribute to his Carolina roots called Electric Cowboy: Born In Carolina Mud. The album drops Feb 11, and this tune features country singer Nikki Lane in a bit of an ode to hangovers, written after Rashad came off a week-long bender.)
Ghost Funk Orchestra – Slow Down (…one of our favorite albums and songs from 2019 was A Song for Paul by Seth Applebaum’s ethereal and ever-metastasizing group based in New York. An Ode To Escapism dropped in 2020 and was our #2 album of that year, and now there’s another one on the way later this year via Karma Chief.)
Bobby Oroza with Cold Diamond & Mink – Maybe, Maybe, Maybe (…another favorite album of ours from 2019 was this gem from the Finnish crooner of Latin Soul called This Love. Bobby apparently has an album all lined up & ready to go, but it seems he’s delayed it to sometime this year, so keep an eye out. Always brilliant sweet soul from Bobby with Cold Diamond & Mink, the house band for Timmion Records.)
Okay, so about to hit the top of the clock again and hit the rock hour, but we’ll start like we finished with a little remix of a soul classic, this time it’s Kek’star remaking Gil Scott-Heron’s The Revolution Will Not Be Televised called Revelution Not Be Televised, and I’m not sure what the deal is with the rather obtuse grammar, but we dig it just the same. THIS is The Drop and we are getting AMPED shortly.
Kek’star feat Gil Scott-Heron – Revelution Not Be Televised

III & IV AMPED
Gang of Youths – In the Wake of Your Leave
Fontaines DC – Jackie Down the Line
Sprints – Little Fix
The Smile – You Will Never Work in Television Again
Elvis Costello and the Impostors – Farewell, OK

A Wilhelm Scream – Be One to No One
Johnny Marr – Night and Day
Andy Bell – Something Like Love
Anxious – Let Me
Spoon - Wild
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Black Hot Soup (DJ Shadow Re-Write)

Gang of Youths – In the Wake of Your Leave
Australian rockers Gang Of Youths are releasing angel in realtime., their new album charting frontman Dave Le’aupepe response to the loss of his father, next month on February 25th. We’ve heard “The Man Himself” and “Tend The Garden,” and now they’re sharing another new track called “In The Wake Of Your Leave.”
“I wanted to reflect on how I became dependent on grief for solace and inspiration,” Le’aupepe says of the song. “The cycle from numbness to acceptance to yearning plays a role in my approach to grieving my dad’s death. As a result, most of the time, I feel a bit futile as a person.”

Fontaines DC – Jackie Down the Line
Fontaines D.C. have a new album on the way. Skinty Fia, the Irish post-punk band’s third full-length, is set for release on April 22nd via Partisan Records. As a preview, they’ve shared its first single, “Jackie Down the Line,” and they’ve also mapped out a massive tour of North America and Europe.
Skinty Fia, which translates to “the damnation of the deer,” is an ode to Fontaines D.C.’s Irish homeland. With the band’s members having since moved away, the album acts as a meditation on turning over new leaves while still honoring your previous seasons of life.
Whereas Fontaines D.C. have leaned on a scrappy, rowdy sound in the past, “Jackie Down the Line” feels more in line with the moody indie rock of The Smiths or The Cure, implementing plenty of jangly guitars and a few “sha-la-la”s for good measure. Its music video feels gothic as well, with an abundance of flowers and an ill-fated romance.

Sprints – Little Fix
Dublin based Sprints have released a new song. The song is called "Little Fix" and is off their upcoming EP A Modern Job that will be out March 11 via Nice Swan Recordings. Sprints will be touring the UK and Ireland February and March and released their EP Manifesto in 2021.

The Smile – You Will Never Work in Television Again
Months after debuting their new collaborative project The Smile during a virtual staging of Glastonbury, Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood have released the band’s first official single. It’s a kickass rocker called “You Will Never Work in Television Again,” which you can stream below.
“The Smile came about from just wanting to work on music with Thom in lockdown,” Greenwood revealed in an interview with NME a few months ago. “We didn’t have much time, but we just wanted to finish some songs together. It’s been very stop-start, but it’s felt a happy way to make music.” Alongside the Radiohead guitarist and frontman, the band is rounded out by drummer Tom Skinner, with additional contributions from producer Nigel Godrich.
Currently, The Smile are working to finish a full-length album. “We’re sitting in front of a pile of music, working out what will make the record,” Greenwood previously said. “We’re thinking of how much to include, whether it’s really finished or if there are a few guitars that need fixing. I’d hope it’ll come out soon, but I’m the wrong person to ask.”

Elvis Costello and the Impostors – Farewell, OK
Elvis Costello and his band the Imposters are releasing a new album called The Boy Named If in exactly one week. “The full title of this record is ‘The Boy Named If (And Other Children’s Stories),'” Costello explains. “‘IF’ is a nickname for your imaginary friend; your secret self, the one who knows everything you deny, the one you blame for the shattered crockery and the hearts you break, even your own.”
“I started The Boy Named If with just an electric guitar, some sharps and flats, high heels and lowdowns, with five songs in bright major keys and carried on to write a whole new record for the Imposters to play,” Costello adds. He co-produced the record with Sebastian Krys, and we’ve already heard one song from it, the rocker “Magnificent Hurt.”

A Wilhelm Scream – Be One to No One
A Wilhelm Scream have announced that they will be releasing a new album. The album is called Lose Your Delusion and will be out April 14 via Creator-Destructor Records. The band released their first single, "Be One To No One" last week. The new record is the first since 2013’s Partycrasher.

Johnny Marr – Night and Day
Since the middle of last year, Johnny Marr has been slowly rolling out a new double album, Fever Dreams Pts 1-4, which (true to its title) has been split up into four distinct parts. The first two have already been released, and the whole album will arrive on February 25. Today, Marr is sharing a new single that’s taken from Fever Dreams Pt 3. It’s called “Night And Day,” and it features backing vocals and some bass-playing from Primal Scream’s Simone Marie Butler. “I need songs after all the news, news, news,” Marr said in a statement about the track. “It gets too real in the hotspots.”

Andy Bell – Something Like Love
In 2020, Ride’s Andy Bell released his first-ever solo album, The View From Halfway Down. That was a relatively compact album, but apparently it was part of a much larger process, with Bell digging back through bits of music from across the years. That process has now yielded another solo outing. This time it’s a double album called Flicker, and it’s coming out a month from today.
Flicker is touted as something of a conversation with Bell’s older self, with some songs dating as far back as the ’90s. Its cover image is an outtake from the photo sessions for Nowhere. Here’s what Bell had to say about it:
When I think about Flicker, I see it as closure. Most literally, on a half-finished project from over six years ago, but also on a much bigger timescale. Some of these songs date back to the ’90s and the cognitive dissonance of writing brand new lyrics over songs that are 20-plus years old makes it feel like it is, almost literally, me exchanging ideas with my younger self.
The View From Halfway Down was about turning 50 during a time of introspection; Flicker is about gathering the tools to equip myself mentally for life in 2022 and beyond – post-pandemic, post-Brexit, post-truth.

Anxious – Let Me
As we’ve heard on the procession of singles from their forthcoming debut album Little Green House, Anxious are kind of a hardcore band, kind of a power-pop band, kind of an emo band, kind of a pop-punk band. On the final advance track from the album, they lean hard into their hardcore side.
“Let Me,” which features vocals from Pat Flynn of Fiddlehead and Have Heart, is as urgent and guttural as it is catchy. The song seems to be an exploration of parasitic relationships: “Don’t cry, I’m here now!” goes the opening lyric. “I want to help just say how long until I can finally breathe.”
Little Green House is out 1/21 on Run For Cover.

Spoon - Wild
Spoon have a new album, Lucifer on the Sofa, coming next month (Feb 11th), and as their latest single demonstrates, the veteran rockers are ready to go “Wild.”
The track opens with danceable drums, before layering on light guitars that chug away like a train in the distance. At the chorus, frontman Britt Daniel puts a bend into the words “world” and “wild,” as he sings, “And the world, still so wild, called to me/ I was lost, I’d been kept on my knees.”
The song comes with a music video directed by Ben Chappell and Brook Linder. It finds Daniel in black and white, wearing a cowboy hat and cutting a lonesome path down the road. In a statement, Linder said, “We were mid putting this video together and my friend Ben asked ‘Is Spoon the best band?’ Yes. Yep. Probably. There’s always something unexpected in the familiar with Spoon. They are mythic to me somehow, and ‘Wild’ needed to feel like a myth, or at least illustrate the myth-making process in some odd way. We used the old ways — crude in-camera techniques — to hit this uncanny western film note. Britt is the quintessential western hero. Had a blast 10/10 would do again.”

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Black Hot Soup (DJ Shadow Re-Write)
Last year, the prolific Australian psych-rock overlords King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard released their synth-heavy album Butterfly 3000. Later this month, they’ll follow that album with the remix LP Butterfly 3001, which features reworkings of Butterfly 3000 tracks from people like Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, DāM-FunK, and Peaches. But the marquee remix is the take on “Black Hot Soup” from DJ Shadow, another psychedelic traveler who’s heavy on the global festival circuit.
With his remix, Shadow has turned “Black Hot Soup” into a classic Shadow banger, a breakbeat-driven funk workout that only takes a few elements from the original track. Shadow’s “My Own Reality Re-Write” of the song layers tumbling drums over a heavy bassline and a whole lot of record-scratching, and it sounds like a beautiful circa-1997 vision of a future that sadly never came to pass.
Even better, Shadow’s “Black Hot Soup” remix has one of the best music videos I’ve seen in a long time. Director John Angus Stewart films John Safran, a famous Australian radio host and prankster, as he parties extremely hard and possibly gets himself in some trouble. This might be even better if you have some context on who John Safran is, but the sight of this guy air-scratching is a whole lot of fun even without that.
