What is All Shades of Chocolate from The State News?

The State News discuss black culture, trending topics, issues in the black community, black clubs at MSU, and educate listeners about the black community.

(Shakyra) Hey, it's your girl Shakyra Mabone

(Jada) Jada Vasser

(Anthony) and Anthony Brinson and this is all shades a chocolate where we bring

(Shakyra) the sweetest

(Jada) the hottest

(All hosts) Black cultrue to MSU

(All three hosts) I look so there was a question that was asked off the air Shakyra Jada? Who's bootiful not my mom, not my mom and my grandma. My mom, my grandma my grandma Alyssa not though like we so Ill we may not know who it is, but we know who they are okay

(Anthony) This it's gonna be a random episode. You know, we go spinning the wheel over the dark and pick an item. Okay, pick a topic to talk about. So one of the things so just to start off, just off script, you know? Am I gonna get my court? Absolutely, absolutely. You can have fun. Let's get let's talk about that. I'm about to say something completely different earlier, but I don't like cornbread.

(All three hosts ) I don't know, bro. It's just not my cup of tea. You know? It's just not for me, but I'm speaking to tea. Do you drink tea? I don't know. I don't eat. Well, my grandma. She's, you know, grandma, so I drink some tea a lot, but it's nasty now, so I don't like it. No more. Yeah, so like, um, yeah, so like, when we go to McDonald's, or we if we pass by McDonald's or whatever, and you ask them out like, Hey, Mark, can we stop at McDonald's? Was she gonna say my mom always got me crazy if you know you know that. We vice McDonald's phone could be like you got McDonald's money. If it was a no. House it was it wasn't a house.

(Anthony) I see the best plot twist is when you actually had McDonald's money. Yeah, I've told you this story. At least I think twice but my dad he used to always be like, like if I actually go to McDonald's but yeah, wouldn't go right past the I used to be hurt. I was telling Jada on we was in a car with Stevie shadow Stevie J this boyfriend Okay, he was driving and I asked him to go to Taco Bell and then he like yeah, I got you because I was gonna buy obviously. And he had row by a Taco Bell. I got PTSD. Relax.

(Shakyra) No, but like, we was just talking about this. And Jaden was like, You know what, we should
do it like an experiment. We should actually ask my mom like, you know her mom.

(Jada) Yeah. So my mom's gonna be like, Hey, Mom, can we go to McDonald's? Keep our McDonald's and we're gonna see if her answer has changed from when I was a kid and I'm, I'm thinking she's gonna say you got your own money. Yeah, we can go and say what does she do? Really, really? Well, we start with meeting they started working. She was like, Yeah, of course. So we get there. We get to the window she ordered for us. But then when it's time to pay, she looked at us. And we like mama, what are you looking at? She said, You want to make nachos? Right? I'm like, me my mama. You know, you still helped me even though make movement. Enter the car. She like Thank you. Thank you. I gotta buy her McDonald's to pat me on the set mama.

(Shakyra) Give me a cup of coffee baby. was among McDonald's

(Jada) was my mom's McDonald's order. It changes so when I was younger, she used to eat Big Macs. But now she's really into like the double cheeseburgers.

(Anthony) Speaking of Big Mac My mom put me hit to like getting a double cheeseburger like taking off the ketchup mustard bad mac sauce. If you like mac sauce. I know some people don't like mac sauce. Really? Yeah, it was somebody else today Tommy? Like Max awesome. I guess, Mike I don't know. But yeah, but normally we go to the store and stuff like that. And your mom would be like you bet not touch anything we'll be getting. How do you feel about that? I was a kid that touched everything like going shopping especially grocery shopping so am I know if I'm going home again?

(Jada) Yeah, Janae and I my mom sorry. Today and the story I'm sorry, even to this day at our big age and she'd be like your act the same as when you're 18 it's like but look they got this today. I'm gonna put this in there to Navy like Oh my God. Look, look. Did they just walk off? Okay, let me let's do a storytime quick story time. Okay, no, no with Janae and going to the store one minute she there the next minute she not so you know, imagine my mama she friended me search. She like, I got two kids. Where's the other one? Where's the shorter one? Where's the other one? So I can't remember, like a target or something. But it's just one story. She always tell to where I was with her and Janae walked off and Janae if you notice that she likes to browse, she looks at something in the cache. And she's like, Oh, what's that? And she goes to follow it. But as a kid my mom was like Where's my child? So she talks about she getting the security She almost had to talk over the PA system. If you see a child named Geneva Sir, please bring them to this. She was walking back up to find us. And I was like Janae hey you know as a kid, but then I'll get in trouble because won't be like why you didn't? She likes to you know, you got to bring tonight back. Man, it'd be funny when they walked off and even but even not just a walk up and I'm like, please, you got to stay with us. Please stay with the group.

(All three hosts) She said birds of a feather flock together. Hmm. Okay. She didn't flock with the flock. You right? She didn't fly with the flock. But yeah, my grown up is so crazy. That our black parents is something else. I'm sorry. My parents just don't understand. But um, you guys obviously can't see us. We're still not on camera yet, but it'll made us a little randomized. We'll I can't see what he's saying on it. Oh my god,

(Shakyra) y'all remember like, um, how black math is like trending on Twitter. I guess. Let's talk about that. So y'all know what black math is? Right? Yeah. So it's like girl math, boy math, but you know, black or the black piece? Yeah, bro, when I tell you when I'm just like scrolling on Twitter or X. I've been in tears for the most part. Like they saw my son black math is losing a house key and your mom was somehow equating that to someone being able to walk in her house. Now when I tell you my grandma, I never had a husky. I didn't get a house. Okay, okay. I didn't get a house key. And so I was like, what? Like, I don't know, high school age. Like me. Still. No, I gave it back. You got one like Lucky? Yeah. You never had like, you do

(Jada) I got one when it might have been late middle school, early high school only because my mom started working late. And meeting it was like, we don't want to go to your job. We want to go home. Right? So she was like, okay to take the key. But then Yeah, but it's like and the thing is, you will lose it for like two seconds and then like, oh, somebody came in here. Rob obviously not. We have options we can take and get started on grandma's it's like that's my mama times too. So she like yeah, what if one day if a storm when are you know when bloom and notice slam open? Like why would that happen? We live in Michigan not included. But when would that happen? Now I'm over here about the crack because I'm like, dang, what if a storm coming?

(Shakyra) No, bro, and they told my son everyone in their mama equal five people mix black map? No, because he's really everybody. Know, I promise you it seemed like every time when I used to go to the mall when I actually like shot them off. I'd be like seeing everybody and I'm like, dang, did I just see you yesterday? And then they remind me of? Well, you got to go somewhere when somebody wants you to go somewhere and do you X will go beater. Yeah. Gotta ask that. Like, who's gonna be there? You're gonna

(Jada) learn that is a vital question. Everybody understands because if there's a name that gets brought up that's going to be there. I don't see me attending

(Shakyra) or if I don't hear a name that I want them to be there. And my cousin going I'm not going because that's my that's really my sister. So I'm not going I'm sorry.

(Jada) I'm gonna stop and say hi. We can make it but other than that, we'll see me

(Shakyra) or let me call you right back if an indefinite amount of time Listen, I I used to hate that and I didn't use you to that but now I understand as

(Jada) I've ever did that to you. But I know I'll be like I'm gonna call you right back I'm not calling you never call

(Shakyra) me back because you don't love me.

(Jada) Do do but it's just the thing where I get on I get on the phone first of all I really don't like being on the phone. So only cost specific people and then you know my phone time just drains down I'm like okay, you know I'll call you back and I see reports on my hand and then I know in the back your hand like you did not call me back I'm like I love you

(Anthony) that's why I'm very strategic on one I don't like being on the phone. When I am on the phone. I just want to talk to you later. Yeah, I'm making I'm making me on the phone we're like you're gonna talk yeah sorry sorry I did not call you didn't when we was on the phone I was the one who called you I think so so lightly you gotta give me my promise but when it when it when it's the nitty gritty I'll be on the phone if it's not the needy or the greedy. I will not be honest. I want to hear your voice. Hey, you like my voice? It's almost a copyright sing like music will be copyrighted.

(Shakyra) I know how we were just talking about how our grandma's seven you know Mama's was not before. They was not the one but also they was the right one. Like, I am not the one but you gotta get the right one today, it was the right one in the room at the same time making me know, we were just talking about that they was like, somebody on Twitter said black math is when something cost $35. And we say

(Jada) $100 because we add tax in the US, okay, am I using cash or my card is gonna make It's basically your $100 did not for $100 You know, I'm saying

(All three hosts) what's the threshold for one like, once it gets to a certain point is $100 Is it 70 And up? It got to be like, 85 I'm like, I might as well just pay the full price, especially if they like, put like measly 5% off. I'm like, Nah, bro. Cuz it's just like, we hear already. We. Yeah, and I say like, nah 7580 I see the one in the distance. I'm like, Okay, you get a product. That's 75 But then you can't add on the nose today, you really add 100 Now you over 100 I gotta buy 75 or the 25 Like, which when we do it on my pocket. This just reminded me of who's talking about this the other day? What's the threshold for like, you differentiate items? Item costs $2. And another item cost like $1.50. Are you really going by that? Dollar? 50? Absolutely. Just talked about chicken or meat at the grocery store. Nope. But that bag? Yeah, absolutely cheaper. Better quality to grocery shopping with my mom. She looked at every price everything

(Anthony I get a fist like Okay, three and above is where I draw the if it's bird Osmo Okay, I just get the cheaper one. But if it's like $2 Like, I'd be like pizza places. And you know how they differentiate the price by size? Yeah, if a large cost $15 Or if let's say a large J OD is like $23 $20,000 almost immediately when he wants me but just give

(Jada and Anthony ) me give me $21 One Bro, that's the cheaper $1 day you never know. You will need that dollar and 50 cent. You never never know.

(All three hosts) The large pieces gonna be worth more for just $1 more. get you to that is fluff. You are so funny. Oh yeah, we're gonna learn Yeah, I love like make me laugh. Where did that come from? Because when we all say that, I'd be thinking I'll be joking when like people's episode where they met this boy I forget the exact scene but he was like going on the you know, Harvey block could have been like, yeah, oppression is up brother. You gotta stay open, open. I can imagine that's a joke for people will be like Sa'Mya Like, I'm like, say that? Yes. Okay, speaking of which, salami eggs and bacon. Were you making a sandwich? You got every ingredient that you can think about to say? Well I'm just about the eggs. Well, how would you make your sandwich if you got every ingredient you can think of in the pantry? How you making your sandwich? How do you make you how do you make it. interesting things that she goes okay yeah and I will say no you do not lie to these people. Watch Oh no, no. I'm not gonna say like hey I was on what you put in I say afterwards I'm like, I don't know officially if I'm lactose intolerant, but how my body will react I just self diagnose it. Especially if I am I'm part of the stigma that people would like those tolerated don't listen. Because I'm gonna tell you I'll make mac and cheese the same if you ever make a game making the same I'll just we're good info like a couple like 2030 minutes. I'm sorry. But this buck math tweets are so funny. They say when the pastor says I'm going to let y'all go in one minute but that's just confirmation that you go along. Yeah, it's like my oh pastor wrestlers. So he used to do that a lot. I just be like, I thought we were supposed to be but this is what happened. He's got that one. Take your time. Passes. Each time we have seen the boy and girl math ones, yes like oh my god, maybe 10 on each other. Oh, it was one day was like boy math is getting hurt by one girl in middle school and getting revenge on every single girl afterwards. So many dudes like Oh me too I have the I just thought this one was Stevie yesterday how many 30 seconds it takes a week. I think he's cooking the chicken

(Jada) Storytime my boyfriend Stevie when he puts them in the microwave, you know how you have so many ways where you you can't put a specific time for so instead of hitting that he will hit 30 and he did it last night when we was making like unlike making the chicken to warm it back up. He kept it 30 seconds. And I'm like lovely. If you need three minutes, why don't you hit three minutes he's like well I need three minutes and 30 seconds so hit three minutes then hit 30 seconds

(All three hosts) or even better you can type exactly the you know we don't really do that we just play one minute 3030 3030 3030 3030 3030 30 I said what you say you don't eat up your food that way No, no. It makes it it makes it eat better. No don't No no, no, no. I hate when people be doing is saying that I'll be there in 10 minutes when I didn't leave the house and I lived 30 minutes away. My ex boyfriend he used to do that all the time. He'd be like I'm on my way and I look at his location. He's just leaving his house. I'm like you made me wait no ways there are to the destination you're trying to reach and that's probably that's not on your way No, no, he's a pro he's about to be on his way to find out whatever was wrong and he's still wants it is really about the destination of the journey. Okay, okay, but that's crazy, but that's it a sandwich question.

(Jada) Oh back to the sandwich question. Um no, I make my sandwich you know he gets a break you know nice bread you know I'm also this is brought to be where my picky side come out what kind of water what's gonna be our pizza come out. You know, I didn't bring it you know? I don't really like ketchup or mustard so I don't put that on a sandwich. I kind of like mail I'm I used to like mail a lot but now I've eaten in a lot some kind of social standing I like it. And I do a little bit of mail you know? I do the meat I do turkey and ham you know beggar on the back? I'm not paying you Shakyra

(Anthony and Shakyra) Every time she's claimed she's been around a bank she asked the patient back swear jarred I swear like you're not that big.

(Jada) Oh good someone made my sandwich right so the bread the mail to Turkey the ham you know a nice piece of lettuce on there gotta get your greens pickles I love pickles more pickle you know toasted bread a little bit get the cheese on melty you know, I like to do maybe some provolone. Maybe some cheddar depending on filling mix it maybe you know mix and match. Oh, that's that's all really you know sandwich.

(Shakyra) Yeah, you know I just heat the bread up and stuff like that to melt the cheese and then you know, I just put some mayonnaise on there. Some honey mustard. A little bit of teeny tiny bit of lettuce. You know, it's also some noodles on there. You know though a little bit is red onions on there. You know that? Okay, it's so good. And then you know, get the provolone. There you go. There you go. Understandable. Understandable. I usually just keep it simple just ham and cheese. toasted bread. You know no substance on there. No, don't you So you went dry? We read we

(All three hosts) But if you like it, or if you date somebody you show a picture but like, you know what, they must have a nice heart. Or if you like, when I tell you I've been through that so many times and it's just like, my friends or something or you get hit with the Oh, okay. He's he looks better in person. I swear he like he actually. Yeah. How is Black is beautiful. Because we know you cooking with a cook? Yeah. You don't say first of all, it's beautiful because we're the trendsetters. We areall you want to know. And we go get political. I say how do we get in? I mean, if you want to get deep into it, I mean, let's talk about it, though.

(Jada) I mean, every other culture that's out here you see traces Black culture when we started it, it was called ghetto. It was ratchet. It was out the box it was unprofessional. But now the professional world is adapting to things that we've already been doing after we changed it to adapt to them. So it's kind of a back and forth for both sides if you think about it, it's the back and forth with the black community as they're trying to learn to get back comfortable with the things they always done and suppress professional work going back and forth because now they have to open their white minds to understand the stuff that we do and how it's we can still be professional even though we have hair colors or you know, we might say differently and guard dialects sound different that doesn't mean we can't do the job the same way a white person could we could just do even a little bit more flair.

(Shakyra) Okay. Yeah, you know to piggyback off that like not in a professional setting you know how they were just like you know, you know as black girls we curvy you know we got the one a day used to be like Oh, having a butt is so nasty. That's human like a pig egg you know just body shaming for one just a classic do my boy like me like you like it was a bad thing. But now for some reason. Yeah, they be getting the Brazilian bullet. Yeah, I was gonna say that like don't get me wrong. That's you do you buy like everybody and they Mama is getting it like you like they want you know what? Happy Birthday like Shakyra say whether you BBL queen or natural queen, you a queen, but natural Queens listen. No, seriously? Well, yeah, it's just like, all of the stuff that we've been doing is just like, not a trend. And it's just like, dang, y'all was just beating us up for it. What happened? Like with the thumbnails and stuff like that date? Oh. They took the time to take the Toronto what's the word calling? Oh, not colonizing. I will say they just you know, they just liking it more. After you know, people used to call it ghetto. Because you know, we creative we like to get nails and rhinestones. And then you know, me personally, I don't get long nails because I'm a klutz. So, yeah, but you know, I got a question for you.

(Anthony) Do y'all put that more towards ignorance? Like they didn't see certain things of black culture? They never paid attention. They like got hip to it one day than they tried to put it on the forefront? Or was it just be I feel it was more kind of like hatin and then like, as it got more popular, they developed it, like, do you think it's malicious intent behind? Like, I guess, colonization or things that happen?
(Shakyra) that's a good question.

(Jada) Um, I think it's kind of both, it just depends on like, the voice or whoever you're asking that question to? Because I do feel like, well, I 100% know that there were people out there. And there were groups out there who said, Yeah, this, this isn't natural. And this isn't what a person should look like. So you know, cut your nails, keep your hair, your natural hair color, you know, don't do these things that are unnatural, because we don't want to see that. And back then the world agree. Yeah, we don't want to see that. Now. The world is changing. And the warm side, no, bring that side out of you be creative. We're tired of the stereotypical person. You know, I love social media. I do that to social media getting popular it made against, you know, the black community, which is a good thing of voice to fully express that side that we always had. So the world was like, Oh, wait, this is actually kind of dope, let's steal it. And let's enjoy it. And that's what they did. But of course, there's some people out there and there's still there's still people out to this day who just genuinely don't know. But it's also important that you go about learning it the right way. So you don't go about learning it by copying you ask questions, it's okay to ask questions. But you also could ask questions the right way. And I feel like a lot of people just don't want to take the time to one learn it and to learn what's the difference between tapping in a little bit and then just taking it and then trying to say, oh, yeah, I never had it in the first place. Well, no, you just don't look at the books

(All three hosts) because like for example, I forget the name of it, but remember when the oil like start getting off the show, like a lot of non people of color started using about that last year, or I forgot but yeah, that was that was ridiculous.

(Jada) But yes, it literally was like I used to be on the line a lot because I have very like thick and dry hair. So it really helps my hair and going into stores when it would be like literally no oil and the oil was usually pretty popular. But now when it got like overpopulated everybody wanted to use it and then you will see videos where they were like, Well that didn't really help my hair so I'm just thought about her way but the bottle will be like full and it's like you could have somebody that bought that who actually needed me and who actually it was designed to be used by couldn't use Did so it was kind of shocking. And then it was the whole thing where people were also making fakes of the oil. Yeah, it was a whole thing. You know, like, if the bottle looks a certain way then it's the fake version. And then there's a real version not the knockoff. Yeah, people somebody made a knockoff. So then the people were like, Oh, this is the actual oil. And I'm like, this isn't doing nothing for my hair. And they were like, yeah, no, you bought the fever

(Shakyra) for this episode, but from everybody. Hey, Chris, when it was Mother's Day, and Chris. Mom wanted that little perfume. Yeah, she got the knockout. She got the rash. Got him to fake. Yes, the hockey jersey? Yes. Oh my gosh,

(Anthony) to go back to the what we were talking about before I brought up the oil. I also unfortunately kind of blame some people a part of the black community where they kind of like tear different things down for like, example, like locks. Were there people like Oh, dreads don't look like they are they're messy. That was something I had to deal with for pretty much my lifetime because I always wanted dreadlocks, but my family not to put anybody on blast in particular. But they always felt that like, it wasn't a professional hairstyle, like people would judge me for like a criminal or they think I would do certain things or act a certain way. And then once I got lucky, I was like, Oh, that actually looks pretty nice. And then with me, like, still working in a newsroom that's mainly white populated, or just being at Michigan State in a predominately white institution. I have it in the back of my mind of like, how people perceive me, but then I remember like, I mean, like Black is beautiful. And I go to a PWI so I mean, like it is what it is. And I'm unique here regardless so I try not to like second guess myself, but I've definitely gotten like side eyes from like groups of white people when I had like a do rag on or when I've had my when I had my hair braided before I got locs and it's just it's an interesting back and forth because you got some people in your own community who will kind of tear you down and then lift you up and then we got to fight that balance. You got people outside of your community. Or looks but yeah, like you said, it's a constant battle.

(Jada) Yeah, and then hairstyle is one of those things that I think will always be a constant battle, because I definitely agree like I've had like I've told you a lot I've had experience with my hair because when I get my braids when I was younger, I wasn't allowed to do a lot of the vibrant colors that I have now. I was really allowed to do like burgundy or black I would do that. Really? Oh yeah, I will when I turned like 13 I was able to like to do it but I had to get older. They

(All three hosts) didn't like me wearing fake nose either. Like 14 Then I heard like especially like they used to my sister like she couldn't get like red nails until like a certain color understood I never experienced that but like how does the color two and two does the math I guess we want to stretch missus incredible if you want to really stretch usually in movies or like more like subjective moments. Jessica Rabbit movie or like I guess in The Color Purple. You know data she was more like wearing all the red and you know she was kind of like the promiscuity you know woman in the movie and

(Jada) yeah, when I didn't even think about that actually. Like, that was like what Red was associated with so yeah, I've had experience with like, oh, you can get anything but you can't get it was like bright red. So like darker red, like burgundy. Yeah, you get the bright red not as to as to out there. And even the colors that I have now. Like I have a lot of stories coming into Michigan State with my brain specifically because I do blonde I have blonde I had a really like icy blue, which is like my favorite color. And I've gotten and then also got like some darker honey blondes. And I know the difference between when I had that color. And when I had like my blue. When I had my honey blonde. It was more so oh my god, that color looks really really nice on you. Some people call it the black girl blonde, which I think is a really cool color. It's kind of it's kind of so yeah, it's like, Yeah, I've seen a few videos on it. It's like, it's almost like that. Yeah, I know what you're talking about. Yeah, it's like the mix of blonde and brown. Yeah, but it's not just straight blonde. So that's kind of like the color I had. It's kind of his honey blonde though, but they gave it that name. 13. Okay.

(All three hosts) Okay, I'll explain that. But the number blew my mind. I can't miss it all over the summer. I was like, yeah, it's almost offered at 630. He was like, what is it? 613. And what are we doing? Yeah, it's like different hair. We've colors like you know, the regular black is like one V or like, no is that brown like off like the brown

(Jada) when we had to buy hair braiding, like the hair, like the hair to get our braids made today are two different hair colors. I'm one because my hair is Jet Black Engineers. One because nature is actually brown. It's a little bit brown. So when she got jet black braids for the first time, you could tell the difference, and it looked off. So the braider was like, oh, no, your one B and when it was like concave well remember that. So that's why I know the numbers because I had to I was one and Jeanette was one B because I got the brown in my hair and it looked really off one time and I was like yeah, this is not my cover. Yeah, so yeah, that's how memorize it. Like any, you know, beauty supply store is always in those stores, that like, keep you on track of what each color like number is and you know, stuff like that. So yeah, that's how I memorized it getting braids, like, like, braids. Like, I started getting braids, like really early. I think it was like, I don't know. But maybe 10 Well, braids, but we've specified Yeah, so I started getting braids with weave. I'm really early because I grew my hair. Because I did a perm with my hair.

(Shakyra) Oh my gosh, yes, every black girl origin story. I would recommend the movie Good Hair is the documentary by Chris Rock. I know. It's kind of you know, a lot of people so it's a good documentary. But yeah, it just like the chemicals in the in the actual mix is just not really good for our hair pattern and stuff like that. And then all they talk about so it can really affect our health and stuff like that. So we're just like, it's not really surprising, but yeah, just messes up your curve. Halloran. Like my grandma, she used to pull my hair a lot because she didn't know how to do hair really? So she was like, Okay, well, you got to get this far. So you can just keep your hair straight and bumped it. Have you ever had your ear? Bump?

(Anthony) What does that mean?

(Jada) Don't bring no. Bump is when you get your hair press like would a person come in and they flat on it? But at the end of the day, it was considered fast if your hair was to say I don't know.

(shakyar) it's like a mushroom hairstyle like literally

(Jada) like that.

(Shakyra and Anthony) Eat all the time. Yeah. Your sister never had I know, because she had really long hair. Oh, never heard that. I've never heard the bump thing. So that was

(Jada) Yeah, open the ends and yeah, back to the perm. So yeah, a perm. It's, it's something to force your hair to be strict, right? So I like I said, I have very, very thick hair. So I got a lot because you you can't get a blow dryer through my hair. I don't get to know more because I was like mama, we got to stop please, Auntie No. But yeah, so it's really really harsh chemicals to force your hair to go straight. So it'd be easier to comb and easier to manage. And you know, but it basically hurts your hair. So when I got to perm, my hair started to fall out like I was losing my crow powder. My hair couldn't hold nothing, no more, it would just fall and it was unhealthy. So it took me a long time one to fight so I didn't have to get burned to the fight so he wouldn't have to go on my hair because that kept killing my hair because so that's when I started getting the braids because my mom was like, well your hair's too thick to just be out we need to do something. So she was like, Oh, let's see your braids how braids would work how do you like braids just like

(Shakyra) even if your hair too thick to y'all I mean you can rock a nice little pretty fro and with the

(Jada) I did a few times out the school year but I also been through a lot with like conflict so that's also why I also kind of don't wear my hair out now like I'm getting better like I wear my like my two puffballs I think those look really nice because my hair had to regrow my hair cut really short because of the pattern. So I had to regrow I didn't like my hair for a long time. So that's when I got my braids and the braids really really helped me and then yeah, now I wear my puffballs, you know, it's still too thick for me to be some witness. So sometimes I'm gonna Yeah, we're gonna make we're gonna put a wig on it, we get some braids, because I want it to be at a specific one. So like maybe in about a year or two, I'll straighten my hair and I'll see how long it is. I definitely don't need my hands clipped but

(Shakyra) but yeah, I'm just not getting my curl pattern back because I took care of my hair myself like I did protein treatments and stuff I need to get I need to do another treatment. So it can like my hair can be like more stronger but like yeah, that firm texturizer Yeah, they used to be like oh no texturizer super firm firm no it's not it's the same

(Jada) burn when you put it all they would literally have

(Shakyra) no matter how long or how you know short you keep it in your head or

(Jada) let me know when it's burning. Oh my

(Shakyra) Oh mommy stuff I'm sorry. It used to stink so bad. Oh my gosh. Oh no. What are grandma some hair? Bro?

(Anthony) I want to ask you a question specifically Shakyra Just because you mentioned like used to take care of your hair yourself. Just with independence in general especially just like being a black woman I always say like you can like do things yourself or just if you need to you can so just how did you were one Why did you develop that of that? I'm like yeah, type of independence. And then how did you develop it to get like comfortable with being independent when you needed to? And then also adjusting when you didn't need to be independent. Like for example, I live in with people. That whole had that whole dynamic if you don't mind me,

(Shakyra) so well. Okay, so my backstory is my grandma um, Raise me my brother, she took us in when I was like, five years old because my mom passed away and my dad, he just wasn't in my space to, like, actually take care of us. So grown up in a household where, you know, my grandma, she is a black, strong, independent woman, her so you know, she, I just looked up to her, as you know, also a taking care of us and you know, I don't need help and things like that. I don't know, it just like it kind of rubbed off on me and things like that. And, um, I don't know, I just kind of learn how to be more independent. Because whenever it's just like, whenever I asked for help it just like, I don't really receive the help. So I just like, you know, okay, well, I just got it myself, because I don't know, it's just so weird. Like, it's just this thing within my family, we just, like really do our own thing. And, you know, to, I'm not gonna lie, like, I'm still adapting to being like, in a household with other people, but like, I still do my own thing, because that's just me in general. I hope that answered like, you know, a question

(Anthony and Shakyra) Definitely understandable with the background. Oh, and plus, I'm the oldest child too. So that also makes sense. Like my older sister. I remember like, my parents, like, whenever I like, was hungry. And like, I'll ask my parents a black show, sister. Yeah. And also hate because that also, like, affected our relationship growing up, but I hate how, like, older siblings always have to get put, like, the extra weight on their shoulders like

(Shakyra) yeah, and it's like, I kind of see now like, not that I'm older. I feel like, my family is going to expect me to be like the matriarchy. Or I think I said that, right. I don't know, of the family. Like you gotta be like the mother figure. And it's like, I'm trying to shut it down already. Because I don't want that responsibility. Personally. I mean, I love my family dearly, but I'm not about to go behind. You know, everyone thinks everybody you know, shouldn't have it because that's not my baggage. Like, that's your baggage. So it just like um, but to answer your other questions you asked that how do I add depth to not being an independent? I think you said like when you like don't need to be independent when you have help. How do you um, like, except that it was hard at first because I was like, Oh, I feel like I'm begging for it or you know, help stuff like that's my song Yes, but yeah, I used to be fitness so bad. I was like, Oh, I'm a burden you know, because like I don't want to ask my um, you know own grandfather and you know, dhafir stuff that I you know, need or you know, to talk to or whatever because I don't know it was just like, I just have this mindset like I'm just a burden I don't want to bother them. But now because my granddad and my aunt or it's so weird my family dynamic so weird, they like told me like it's okay to ask for help and there's nothing wrong with that because everybody hope everybody you know, they're gonna knee hurt like every now and then and things like that. So I was just like, Okay, well I'm just going to be more comfortable and more open to the fact that you know, I can receive help from
people but at the same time, I'm still going to be you know, all my P's and Q's just because I'm just Yeah

(Anthony) I appreciate you answering those two questions got no they can get a bit personal obviously all recipes to mom as well but um, with that being said, We're approaching the 40 minute mark now and then I hope you guys enjoyed this random episode that we've put together but if you guys have any extra additional thoughts I got one more but it'd be really short.
