And here’s today’s news from National Health Executive on Tuesday the 9th of July 2024.
New health secretary Wes Streeting says he is committed to reversing the funding shortfall observed across general practice and primary care as a whole. On a visit to London’s Abbey Medical Centre with NHS England’s CEO, Amanda Pritchard, Streeting vowed to bring back the family doctor — a core part of the Labour Party’s manifesto during election campaigning.
The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care’s first official visit being to a GP practice is symbolic of the direction in which the new government intends to shift resources and focus care. “I’m determined to make the NHS more of a neighbourhood health service, with more care available closer to people’s homes,” said Streeting.

Kicking off the appointments in Wes Streeting’s ministerial team are Karin Smyth and Stephen Kinnock, as the Department of Health and Social Care begins to take shape following Labour’s landslide victory in the general election last week. Kinnock has been appointed as minister of state for care after winning the seat in his constituency for Welsh Labour with a 10,000+ majority. He was originally focused on immigration but comes in as social care minister.
Meanwhile, Smyth — a former NHS manager — has been appointed minister of state for health after winning her Bristol South seat with a nearly 8,000 majority. The news follows new health secretary Wes Streeting’s first address in the role, where he confirmed that the official policy of the DHSC is that the NHS is “broken”.

NHS Providers has announced two new additions to its leadership team in the form of Caroline Harrison and Isabel Lawicka. Harrison is coming in as the new director of corporate services and finance, while Lawicka replaces Miriam Deakin as the new director of policy and strategy. Deakin has moved to director of development and engagement.
CEO Sir Julian Hartley said: “These leadership changes will help ensure that NHS Providers continues to be an outstanding membership organisation for NHS trusts and foundation trusts. Our members face unprecedented challenges and our role in supporting and championing their work has never been more important. We are confident that this refreshed leadership team has the skills, experience and the commitment to take our organisation — and the work it does for our members — from strength to strength.”
