The Drop with Danno on GFN 광주영어방송

We start with the everything man St. Quincy of Jones, then move into the new indie and underground for the week on our Triggered Tuesdays with the illustrious Kat Bass at the helm.

Show Notes

As broadcast September 27, 2022 with a giant shrine built for St. Quincy of Jones.  Tonight we highlight just a tiny fraction of the amazing work Quincy Jones has done outside the studio for charitable and progressive causes, then get into all the new stuff that's a bit off the radar, a tad askance of the mersh dogs, and/or a tidbit too weird for your boomer uncle who's otherwise a pretty sweet guy.  Our new indie for this week includes tunes from all over the map, with highlights being stuff from Big Scary, Magdalena Bay, Unusual Demont, and Alvvays amongst the very solid field.

Part 1

Quincy Jones – The Dude
Morning Silk – How You Do It
Sofie Royer – Love Park
Big Scary – Asking Right
.com – Sometimes
Kainalu & MUNYA – Inhibitions/Intuitions

Facts
Quincy Jones – The Dude
- That was the title track to El Q del Producto’s 1981 album to open the show.
- We go forward in the timeline a good bit from there almost 20 years to the year 2000 for today’s TIGHT (or) feature, as Quincy Jones’ Listen Up Foundation donated $25,000 to five South Central Los Angeles youth organizations. The endowments, made in the names of the five teens who are members of Listen Up's From South Central To South Africa youth delegation, are presented with the money during a reception at the Creative Artists Agency in Beverly Hills.
- The five teens traveled to the Orange Farm Township, outside of Johannesburg, South Africa, one of the country's most disadvantaged communities, to build homes for three South African families.
- And that’s just the kind of dude we’re talkin about here. Quincy Jones, long live.
Morning Silk – How You Do It
- For those not in the know, Morning Silk describes themselves as a New York based alternative indie rock/pop recording project led by Frank Corr. Signature drum and synth sounds, and a wall of screaming guitars can be recognized as Morning Silk's production style.
- This is part of the artist’s debut EP, which was set for Sept release, now pushed back to about a month from now on October 25, which is eponymous, or named simply after the band, Morning Silk.
Sofie Royer – Love Park
- This is a tune off the artist’s sophomore LP, which actually got put out on Stones Throw back in July, but seems to be picking up more traction of late.
- The album is called Harlequin, and as you could hear right there, has a late 70’s early 80’s feel in the production. Interestingly, the artist is classically trained and studied violin in Vienna during their younger days, being of Austrian and Iranian background.
- Very good album, Harlequin just as Pitchfork puts it, cool melancholy all the way through.
Big Scary – Asking Right
- This is a great band out of Austrailia, which is the duo of Tom Iansek and Joanna Syme.
- The group just released the Me & You LP on Friday, which I’m sure is making every old school English teacher’s head explode.
.com – Sometimes
- Another really great bit of lo-fi rock from this cat, who once again used to go under Hawian Eagles (not mispronouncing that), and this is his 2nd tune in as many weeks here on the show.
- Nothing further as far as an album but something must be in the loop, right?
Kainalu & MUNYA – Inhibitions/Intuitions
- Shout out to Madison, WI on this one as that’s Kainalu’s home base.
- The contemplative, experimental sophomore LP by Kainalu, Ginseng Hourglass, is due out November 4, and this is the follow-up to another very nice single called Queen of Wands.
- MUNYA of Montreal is doing the vocal duties on this feature, and the artist released a great album last year that is very much on this spacey psyche tip called Voyage To Mars if you’d like to hear more from one of our Quebecois favey fave fave faves.

It is an acknowledgment that, however difficult, we must confront our demons before we can fully move on. No amount of escapism will banish the “ghosts we bring”.

Djo - End of Beginning 2.39

● Over the last few years, in between roles as a murderous rideshare driver and a beleagured video game designer, he’s been kicking around a solo synth-pop project called Djo. As suggested by the moniker, which is pronounced like his first name, it’s still him—but with a wink.
● His album, Decide is a fun synth-pop album that proves Keery’s talent and today's pick “End of Beginning” describes about returning to Chicago and reconnecting with a past version of himself.
