Obstructive sleep apnea, OSA for short, is a sleep-related breathing disorder. It is one of the most common sleep disorders and affects about one out of every five adults across the world. OSA is characterized by recurring, complete, or partial obstructions of the upper airway during sleep. For an accurate diagnosis, a full-night laboratory or at-home sleep study should be performed. The sleep study provides us the exact number of obstructions that meet the diagnostic criteria, such as the length of the event and the level of oxygen drop after each event. If there are, on average, more than five obstructions per hour of sleep, we diagnose it as obstructive sleep apnea.
