Entering Yom Kippur with Rav Shlomo Katz

In this shiur on Shabbos Shuvah, Rav Shlomo Katz and the chevra of Shirat David explore why this Shabbos carries such a unique place within the Aseret Yemei Teshuvah.

Beginning with the Magen Avraham, Mateh Moshe, and Mareh Yechezkel, Rav Shlomo traces the origins of the Shabbos Shuvah drasha and the deeper reason this Shabbos became a time for awakening people toward teshuvah. He then turns to Rav Tzadok and the Sefat Emet to understand why Shabbos itself is a time of return, clarity, and reconnection to the deepest point of who we are.

Along the way, Rav Shlomo discusses Aseret Yemei Teshuvah as “days of wet cement,” the meaning of ruach shtus, the difference between our mistakes and our essential identity, and why Shabbat Shuvah gives us a unique opportunity to decide who we want to become while the year is still taking shape.

Yofi. Shkoiach everybody.

Good morning, and Shkoiach. The sponsors of breakfast, Shiur today is sponsored by the Reinetzes לעילוי נשמת ר' Moshe ben R'' Menachem, and לעילוי נשמת my uncle ר' Shmuel ben R'' Shlomo HaKohen. Anonymously for a זיווג הגון for Esther bat Rachel, Nechama Miriam bat Tzina Perl, Yael Aviah bat Chana Devorah. Today is sponsored by the Abram family for the רפואה שלימה מהרה for Moshe Asher ben Malka, and Tzipka Malka Raizel bat Chaya.

Yofi, Shkoiach. Be'emet, every every sponsorship, Be'emet, it's not just like it's a big Kavod for the Refuah, or לעילוי נשמה, but it really helps things keep on rolling. And things doesn't just happen, like we we always encourage and are thankful for every single sponsorship. Today we have a Shiur on שבת שובה, how it got its name, what's the real what is the real reason why it's called שבת שובה, and hopefully we'll make the most of it this coming Shabbos.

Amen. This coming Shabbos, it's a big Shabbos to to take advantage of. I feel like this has been one long festival since like I don't know, since like ח״י אלול it's been like one long festival. We just started.

And we בדיוק, רק רק התחלנו, you know? Someone said to me, "What time is Hoshanah Rabbah by you?" I'm like, "Hoshanah Rabbah?!" Someone asked me to ask you. "Hoshanah Rabbah, like Are you kidding me?" I said, "I'll let you know what time Minchah is today, you know, like Hoshanah Rabbah." All right, chevra, let's let's learn inside. Today we're going to see through the halachah, first of all, where this name really comes from, and then take it through the halachah into pnimiyut, and hopefully get some real nice, beautiful, holy words from from some of the tzaddikim. So we have already the first source, the Magen Avraham tells us in You guys would be so much more happier if we held like this.

I would say two drashot a year, zehu! Shabbos Hagadol, Shabbos Shuvah. That's how it used to be, you know? Magidim, like professional professional, I guess I call them whippers, because these guys would go around and zetz the living daylights out of you. Like professional magidim would go around and give shmuessen on Shabbos. But really the rabbanim would give two drashot a year: Shabbos Hagadol, Shabbos Shuvah.

"והעיקר," and the Magen Avraham says, for what reason davka do they give drashot then?

"והעיקר להורות לעם השם דרכי השם, ללמד המעשה אשר יעשון." Like it was basically to teach them how to how to really, he's not saying it here, but how to halachically apply the halachot for the days coming ahead. So there's tons of halachot for Yom Kippur, so Shabbos Shuvah was a day of ke'ilu just explaining to people what the mahalach is. And of course, Pesach, Shabbos Hagadol is basically reminding the tzibbur of how you're supposed to act halachically during during the the Yom Tov of Pesach.

"ומהרא״ל היה דורש גם הלכות חג הסוכות בשבת שובה," because, you know, usually we have the din of shloshim...

the minhag of שלושים יום קודם החג, you learn the halachot of a certain chag 30 days before. Sukkos gets the hardest one. Who's learning הלכות סוכה right now, right? The truth is in some of the yeshivos, you know what they would do Motzaei Yom Kippur right after Ne'ilah, after Maariv? It's so beautiful. They go right to the Beit Midrash and they open up learning Masechet Sukkah.

That's how it used to be in many of the yeshivos. They'd just open up Masechet Sukkah right after right after the fast. So the Magen Avraham is telling us over here that the reason that that we have an inyan of learning of of darshaning on these Shabbos is not because שבת שובה דרשה. It's what it is is basically telling us how to act.

That's That's what it seems like lechora. The Mateh Moshe explains it a little bit, he expands on this a little bit. And he says regarding Shabbos Shuvah specifically, he says he he holds that there's another Shabbos that there's a drashah and that's the Shabbos before Rosh Hashanah.

ונוהגין לדרוש בשבת זו, שבת שובה, וכן בשבת שלפני ראש השנה, and the Shabbos before Rosh Hashanah.

And he's saying it's not about halachah, he's saying it's So his thing is not so much saying, you know, it's like halachot of Yom Kippur or Sukkos like the Mahari"l, he's bringing it towards what's become more or less the מנהג המקובל, that words that come out from the drashos on Shabbos Shuvah hopefully arouse the hearts of those that come to hear it. B'ezrat Hashem we have a very special I'm I'm very excited about this and I'm very thankful to Hashem that I I may look exhausted, but I'm very very like awake inside because there's been a lot of shefa of Hashem sending the right torot to learn and to teach, and שבת הגדול שבת שובה דרשה this year is באמת פלא. It's not I'm not saying about anything I did, what was sent down to look at is just I feel and I'm davenning, I'm davenning my heart out.

Be'emet, I'm davenning so strong. It's what the Mateh Moshe is saying,

ומצאתי סמך לזה במדרש משלי, and he says, "I found a proof, a samech, a a Yeah, like a source, a hint in in the מדרש משלי שכתוב.

Proof, yeah.

Like when when the when the when the drashah is happening, there's a kapparah taking place in Am Yisrael. It's very interesting. He's saying there's mamash kapparah comes down when there's real when there's strong Torah being said Shabbos Shuvah.

על כן ראוי לדרוש בשבת זו, what's the reason?

כדי שיכפר עונותיהם, so that you help the process of what עשרת ימי תשובה and then culminates in Yom Kippur brings down, which is kapparah.

This became a minhag, an established minhag, and we know we have the famous saying, מנהג אבותינו תורה היא, and it became Torah. It's like having it's like Torah.

No, no. Here he's just saying the reason about Shabbos Shuvah. He's not even he's not even No, no, no. The kapparah that of the zeman of

We have to see why he says the Mateh Moshe why he says the reason for the Shabbos Hagadol. He'd probably then go to what the Magen Avraham says. He would say, "No, it's then it's halachic." The truth is, though, be'emet how many forget here. How many Shabbos Hagadol drashot are purely halachic these days? There are a few places.

I've been I've been to over the What's that? So maybe he'd say that, you know, yeah. Geulah. So יכול להיות. But over here, the Mateh Moshe is basically saying the the inyan of of the drashah of the Shabbos Hagadol of Shabbos Shuvah is not like the like the Magen Avraham.

He's saying over here it's really there's this kapparah taking place when this happens. It's an awesome that's an awesome imagery. That's an awesome awesome metzi'ah, awesome metziut. Now then I saw this source really it was it was this is very interesting, the Mareh Yechezkel.

The Mareh Yechezkel, Rabbi Yechezkel Paneth, was a talmid of Reb Menachem Mendel Rimanover. And the Mareh Yechezkel says like this, That's all it is.

The haftarah is called Shabbos Shuvah. We have a few other Shabbatot like that that are called after the haftarah, like Shabbos Chazon and Shabbos Nachamu. We don't have this by Shabbos HaGadol. Shabbos HaGadol, what's the first word of the haftarah? No, but I'm saying the What's that? The first word is, what is it? I don't know.

Whatever, it's it's it's לא חשוב. I mean he does, but that's the end of the haftarah.

But Shabbos HaGadol in uh it has many other reasons why it's called that.

Here he's saying there's three Shabbatot in the year that when the names are connected to the haftarah: Shabbos Shuvah, Shabbos Nachamu, and Shabbos Chazon. Shabbos Shirah is not I mean there is a shirah, but that's You understand, it's it's it's very much different. So he says over here, כן, so it would have been called שבת וערבה, you know, מה שנקרא. Vayter.

Look inside everybody. Everyone has a lot to say today, just hold on cause we have a lot to learn.

ועל כן כתבו ספרי מוסר, that's why the מוסר'דיקע ספרים are saying, שימים ימים הללו צריכים להיות כמו חול המועד. These days, like עשרת ימי תשובה, is really a חול המועד between the Yom Tov of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Everyday, to really take deep do deep accounting, especially what we were speaking about, which is more תשובה עילאה this week. Like how much how much did I take advantage of all the moments Hashem all the gates Hashem opened for me? That's what we were learning yesterday in the women's shiur by Rabbi Steinsaltz. Teshuvah over all the all the things that It's not aveirot, it's just lost opportunities that I didn't take advantage of.

And I and I and I say to myself during עשרת ימי תשובה, like this year is going to be much more used, it's going to be much more taken advantage of in a in a very good way.

אמנם, now look what he says. This is what I wanted to get to.

And this is so true.

אמנם מחמת עול הגלות ודוחק הפרנסה, because we're living in a very strange reality which is very foreign to who what we're really supposed to be, which is not תחת עול הגלות and דוחק הפרנסה, הכל טרודים במשא ומתן. Everyone's busy with with with trying to make a dime during the week.

But the truth is what the what the Mareh Yechezkel said that every single person should be busy really introspection, deep moments, hisbodedus, v'chule, who, I mean, whatever, here it's a relative question, who didn't go to work this week? But I could ask that any day of the year over here, but over here, I'm saying like like who from those that actually have jobs, who who didn't go to work this week? No, everyone went back to work. I mean everyone's back in the grind from Tzom Gedalia, right? From Tzom Gedalia. Lichorah, if it's Chol Hamoed, they shouldn't have been busy doing anything other than deep introspection the whole week. Baruch Hashem, we grab a few minutes here, like Rabbi Natan says, lachtof po lachttof po, we grab whatever we can.

And Rabbi Natan's so big on this, this word lachtof, grab. You grab you have a minute here, grab it. Grab it. So we we we grab, we maybe we grabbed more minutes this week, but honestly, like was it a Chol Hamoed? No, because that's not the world we're living in.

And he understands this, and he's saying this 160 150 years ago, probably more. More than 150 years ago. Al kein, bottom of the the the third paragraph in the middle, Why is there a drashah on Shabbos Shuvah?

It's for only one reason: because you have the time, because your mind is not engrossed, it's not deeply right now, hopefully, you know, thinking about the next buck, or His his reasoning over here, the Mareh Yechezkel, is a little bit different than the Magen Avraham, it's more like the Mateh Moshe, but he's explaining it to say, really it's almost like a b'dieved what he's saying over here. Like the metzius of Shabbos Shuvah is a b'dieved. Why? Because we live in a world that the chol of עשרת ימי תשובה אינו כדבעי, it's not the way it's supposed to be.

What really is it supposed to be? Aseret Yemei Teshuvah. Did you ever meet Do you understand what I'm saying?

עשרת חולם עשרת ימי תשובה חול המועד יידעלעך, where it really is like you know, it's it's really not just עשרת ימי it's not just the weekday that happens to be, you know, Avinu Malkeinu, but it's really the days are filled with very, very, you know, beautiful, beautiful time, taking the time. So the point here is not to feel bad, the point is to say, well, you know what? There's two more days of chol of Aseret Yemei Teshuvah: today and Sunday. He's back.

Hisbodedus, hisbonenus, take the time, boys. It's it's saying it to myself, "Take the time." Be'emet, these days don't come back during the year as as my precious brother and teacher in Los Angeles, David Sacks, always says I've said I try to say it every year that Aseret Yemei Teshuvah, he calls it the days the days of wet cement, days of wet cement. The cement is wet. You know, I saw it by urban Do you have it by you also, Yehudah, on the sidewalk? He did it.

When you know, when you have like when you have a a new pavement on the sidewalk and it's And then you you inscribe, you know, in America, we used to do this a lot, right? The days of wet cement, it's a beautiful imagery. Like Aseret Yemei Teshuvah is days of wet cement. So, we we still have a little bit of time to lichrot our name, "Oh, yeah, here a pen drop." Like, "I was here, and this is who I am. And this is And you And what you're going to basically write in the cement, it will be the hisva'ut for the rest of the year." So, we still have today.

Today it's Friday. Mamash, it should be a real I I don't want to say serious Friday, but I'm I'm saying like a You know what I mean? Penimius'dike Friday, yeah, more intentional, more hachanot, you know? And then Sunday bichlal. Obviously, everyone's so excited about one thing on Sunday, that Selichot are the shorter that shortest that it is, then then any other Selichot. For some it's already over, but you hold by Kashrut Liubavitch on Pesach, too? Okay, I'm just saying.

And by I'm just checking.

Right. Me, too.

Rav Noachly? Rav Noachly. So, according to the Mareh Yechezkel, again, to sum this up, he's saying over here, Shabbat Shuvah came about because there was a need to wake to remind people what it's all about. And therefore, when is the time that can it could happen during עשרת ימי תשובה besides ראש השנה and יום כיפור?

ראש השנה comes in in a frenzy, יום כיפור, it's too late already. So, when's the time that there could be an opportunity to take advantage of the zman that we're in, the zman of teshuvah? Shabbat.

That's what it was. And he even ends here bediyuk, mamash.

I know.

I know. But I I wish that I knew how to say שמע ישראל like these amei haaretz from 200 years ago, you know? Yeah, they had They just didn't have the broader picture of things. Bevadai, bevadai.

And we're sitting here today saying, "Wow, they mamash knew nothing. We know." If we knew, then, you know, hopefully, we're getting to know. You know, we're getting to know. Right.

Right.

Right, and then there was like two guys in the back like, "I'm sorry, thank you," you know. Today, it's like Now, Rabbi Tzadok is going to explain to us, like why is it that the teshuvah of עשרת ימי תשובה, the certain type of teshuvah, can only be done on Shabbat Shuvah, for a certain reason.

שבת שובה, שבו מפטירין שובה ישראל, רבי צדוק, this is one of Rabbi Tzadok sefarim, Takanat Hashavim. Eli, you teach, you've done Takanat Hashavim in the podcast? Not yet. Takanat Hashavim, Rabbi Tzadok had so many sefarim. Takanat Hashavim, פלאי פלאות, that sefer.

He is saying, be'emet, all you you want to really know what Shabbat Shuvah is all about? Say the haftarah, like listen to the haftarah, say every word over there. Like the whole sichah we did from the Rabbi was from the haftarah, right?

You just sit with the haftarah. Because what happens, Rabbi Tzadok says, כי לעולם, always, when the Second line, בשבת הוא זמן תשובה. The emet is, Shabbos comes from the word תשוב. Shabbos itself is a teshuvah moment, right? Shabbos itself, just any Shabbos, leolam, every Shabbos.

No difference between every, every single Shabbos is a zman is Why?

Okay, so this is already, you know, much deeper. What does this mean? That there's the restoration, the worlds, all the עולמות that we refer to all the time go back to its source, and it's כגוונא דאינון דמתייחדין באחד.

You would say it every Friday night, so anyone know what that means? Absolutely not.

כגוונא דאינון דמתייחדין באחד is exactly what R'' Tzadok HaKohen is saying over here. The worlds, all the עולמות that we speak of all the time, not just אצילות, בריאה, יצירה, עשיה, all the other עולמות, all the different types of functioning of מציאות העולם, they go back and they're restored in its shoresh on Shabbos. Obviously this is a much deeper concept than what I'm saying over here.

And when you go back into into your root, and when the worlds go back, It's almost like when you're in the boxing ring and then you go back to your corner. That's mamash what it's like. When you're in the boxing ring, you know, chol, the weekday is like a boxing ring, right? That's why chevra, you got to show up to shul on time, you know why? For one reason, for the takanah of the Baal Shem Tov.

We, the only shul probably in this whole area Does Rav Shlomo have a minyan on Friday nights? No. He does? No? Usually not. Usually not. If he did, he would also say this, right? I think they say it in Chabad too.

Dov swims, right? What happens over there? That's the takanah of the Baal Shem Tov that we say the kapitel Tehillim of הודו on Mincha, right before Mincha, Erev Shabbos. Why? Because what is in that kapitel Tehillim?

It's the hagomel. It describes the four different people that have to give thanks and say hagomel for things they went through.

Why? Because the Baal Shem Tov is basically revealing to us, if you were able to make it through a whole six days in this world without the kedushah of Shabbos and you're back, you should start Shabbos off by bentshing hagomel, basically. And that's why we start by bentshing hagomel. It's also why you don't say it on שבת חול המועד. Because חול המועד is not like regular chol, so therefore we don't say it on שבת חול המועד, because there's not a gomel over there.

But that's, R'' Tzadok is basically saying, this is what happens on Shabbos. So that's true every Shabbos. I'm in the ring every week, and I go back to my corner, and I got my trainer there spritzing things into my mouth and plucking open my eyes and whatever it is. That's true every Shabbos.

But then he ends off, okay, But really this Shabbos, all of that is happening even more. Even more. Sorry? Championship round, yeah.

Yeah. For us, we need to basically either have the imagery of Mickey, anyone get that one? Okay. Or, what was Apollo's Mickey that then became Rocky's Mickey? Remember? And Rocky IV, it was already it was the other guy, the black guy, the bald one that used to be Apollo's guy, no? Yeah, yeah, he was a gevald. Shiny head anyway.

Sorry, anyway, I'm tired. Sefat Emet. We go to the next page now.

The Sefat Emet is going to explain to us, you know what, yeah, let's do this, let's go through the Sefat Emet. The Sefat Emet says like this: to me'orer for us for this Shabbos Shuvah, the Sefat Emet is going to teach us like this: כי כשלת בעונך זה נאמר לכל איש ישראל. When the when the navi is telling us, when Hoshea HaNavi is telling us in the הפטורה, כי כשלת בעונך, some of us read that and we're like, yeah, mamash you should listen, you should read this, you know, really you should read this.

ואף שחטא, but then basically ואף שחטא והרשיע הרבה, צריך להאמין כי עיקר נקודה הישראלית שבו היא במקומה, that the עיקר נקודה of what makes you a Yid It never left you, it's still in you. When does a person recognize this the most? On Shabbos. On Shabbos.

You know when I you know when I you know you We're good? We're good. Okay. Only when I really, really, really feel that, do I believe this What would happen to my self-identity, and I'm saying in a serious way, if I believed this Chazal, that a person only sins if a spirit of folly entered into him? We'd beat ourselves up a lot less.

We'd beat ourselves up a lot more. The opposite. Opposite. Opposite.

No, why would we beat ourselves up more? Because I'd be like, there's a רוח שטות on me all the time. I got to work on that. But it's external to you. That's what you No, I don't think it's fully external.

You let it in. Right. No, no, no, no, the truth is, I I hear what you're saying. Yeah, because the other way would be I believe this, רוח שטות is what causes me to sin, and it's not I don't have any control over it.

Right. And you have to have some accountability to Where did you let Right, it's not you, but my responsibility was Did I, or not? 100%. No, I'm actually I'm with you, be'emet, I'm with you.

But it's still external. You let it in. However, how bediyuk, however, it's still external. But the problem is, what we just said right now takes a lot of בהירות הדעת, and that we don't have during the week.

We have that on Shabbos. So Rav Tzadok is saying to us sorry, the Sfat Emet is saying that the clarity that comes to me on Shabbos is that It's true. It's from the outside.

It's not me. But at least, you know what the beginning of my healing really is? Like the ability to start taking responsibility for my life for real is acknowledging that it's not really me. And if it's not really me, let me close all the פתחים, let me close all the openings from where I see it. That that's teshuvah.

That's serious teshuvah. With alcohol they say, Only with yayin, with wine. All types.

Not with the other one, yeah? That's something that's inside you that that's inside you that you're still re- you know, saying that from inside that comes out. Here, with ruach shtus, it's something from outside that comes in, opposed to Right. Nachon. Nachon.

So so, but but realizing it, this Chazal is from the outside. Nachon, it's not me. However, how did I let this become How did I let this enter inside? So the person that says, 'No, no, no, no, it's not it was it's not your achrayus. It's you live in a crazy world.' No, no, no, no.

There's no achrayus like that. There's no responsibility. So where in my life that Shabbos Shuvah gives me the ability to say, to see this and to take achrayus and make some real strong החלטות and say, אני כבר לא פותח פה את השער. This gate is closed now, right?

The ruach shtus is called a michshol. A michshol means a stumbling block.

עיקר תשובה, according to the Sfat Emet, is to make a decision: what will be your sustenance this year? What will be your vitality? You could be fully alive this year in completely wrong way.

Either you are chazak, but the koach is coming from the ruach shtus's, או או, cuz you can be chazak with those things, meaning you can build a whole persona and a career coming from an external thing that has nothing to do with who you really are, or you could say, mamash this year, עיקר חיות, what's going to make me feel alive this year is is my חיות אלקי, my Godly my real vitality. It could be that's the difference with עד ה' אלקיך. One is עד בכלל, and one is the opposite, not totally. And it's that the difference, like you could like you could do whatever you could do, and you will come closer to ה'.

If you're going to go in the penimiyus, that's the עד ועד בכלל that you'll be like So it's like a like a נהר מתמשך even cuz it doesn't end, meaning this Right. Once you connect to that, Nachon.

ולכך, therefore the Sfat Emet says, if this is what happens on any שבת, ולכך בשבת בנקלה ש- sorry, this happens Shabbos, but specifically, Shabbat Shuvah cuz of the הפטורה, ולכ- ולכך בשבת בנקל לשוב. That's why it's and we have all these things we would like to work on ourselves, he says Shabbos makes it easier for you to actually jump in to all those things you would love to be, to all the dreams you have for yourself for what this year is going to be.

Since all the worlds are returning up, everything's in a state of returning back to what really makes it tick, חיות אלוקי. Then on שבת שובה, ולכן בשבת בנקל לשוב, בנקל means it's easier, כי יש לכל הבריאה עליה בשבת קודש, because it's happening, and the whole world is going and restoring itself into its corner, receiving vitality and life and or and chiyut again.

ובשבת קודש מתיחדין ומתדבקין כולן בשורש העליון, this is like what we saw before, שבשבת יוכל להיות התגלות אף למי שנתרחק. You know how many times people have told me it's like, you know, I mamash, I didn't go to shul once the whole week, I put on tefillin once on like a 5:00 p.m., and I'm going through imposter syndrome.

I say, "Why?" He says, "Because I walked into shul Friday night, and I just, I don't know, I feel like I'm in. And I don't know what to do." Well, it's not amazing, you should go to shul and you should put tefillin on everyday. If they actually felt like they were in after having a week like I know, but you know what? I want us to stop falling in love so much with the examples of hefker, hefker, hefker, it doesn't last. It doesn't last.

It doesn't last, chevra. Selichot started this morning at 7:55 when it should have started at 7:40. By 8:45, there's 60 people. We have to We're either doing it or we're not.

You understand? Like be'emet, it's like we have to we have to get our game on. And we can't bank on the fact that a guy like the example that we said right now. You can't bank on that. It Obviously, it doesn't last.

It doesn't last. Our inyan here has to be to take advantage on Shabbos to realize the imagery of who we really want to become. We don't want to be the banker. We don't want to be people that bank like that.

Now, if it ends up happening like that, that's bedieved, and it's a gift, but we're still in a state of lechatchilah right now. It's the beginning of the year. Don't throw a bedieved onto lechatchilah. We're still in lechatchilah.

We have to do this. The koach to do this is Shabbat Shuvah. The koach to do this is on Shabbat Shuvah. Again, the end of this Sfas Emes is שבשבת יוכל להיות התגלות אף למי שנתרחק, כי מתגלה נקודה הפנימיות שגנוזה בכל איש ישראל, because that thing that makes you tick, that place that's concealed, that's shamur, the Alter Rebbe would probably call it ahavah mesuteres, that embedded, concealed love that exists within each and every one of us is misgaleh on Shabbos.

And each of us have it, and the Sfas Emes reminds us, So, this is what happens on Shabbat Shuvah. And that meaning the awareness of this is accessible on Shabbat Shuvah. And it was it would be so good if we really remembered we're still in the lechatchilah, this is the beginning of the year.

It's still the beginning. Let's not try to bank on trying to pull ourselves out last second, cuz trust me, it'll happen anyway at a certain point during the year, right? It'll happen anyway. But don't already like pregame it, you know? Don't pregame it. It'll happen anyway cuz that's derech haolam, that's derech hateva.

Ein mah laasot, there's no way out of it, unless you mamash become like, I don't know, you're just completely removed from this world and you stay in that place, but we're in this world להרים את להרים את הארץ לשמים, to lift up this world. Now, the next two pieces, we're not we're not gonna do right now, but I just wanna give you basically what Rav Kook is saying over here. And that Rav Kook is saying that is that when we embark on a path of teshuvah, and Rabbi Nachman speaks about this in Likutei Moharan as well, that the first thing that you'll How do you know if you're on a path of teshuvah?

If you have opposition, if it doesn't come easy, that's how you know you're actually in a path of teshuvah.

But Rav Kook is saying to us in the In the second piece also. You know, at a certain point, though, with that recognition of, yeah, I realize these are meniot, they only became a meniah once I decided what the destination is. Like how did something become a stumbling block? Only when I decided where I'm trying to get to. I'm trying to get to a good place.

Ay, and it's going to start to be harder, nachon. So therefore, we have to really internalize this, that there's one time of the week that the meniah has no achizah on me, that the stumbling block does not hold me. And that's on Shabbos. That's on Shabbos.

Every שבת, אלף אלפי, you know, like to the ultimate, on the Shabbos that's בין כסה לעשור. Because you're sandwiched in between I like it when Shabbos doesn't come out on Yom Kippur, 'cause there's no Shabbos Shuvah, right? Like I love it. There's not real Well, you have a Shabbos Shuvah that's davuk to Rosh Hashanah, so you don't really feel like the the the air that Shabbos Shuvah brings, right? Sorry? And you also get to say אבינו מלכנו on Yom Kippur. On Yom Kippur.

Just let's stick to what I'm trying to say right now. So what I'm trying to say is that Shabbos Shuvah is this amazing, amazing experience of being able to really hold on to who I want to be lechatchilah. Days of wet cement. Take your I don't know what you use to What do people use, their finger? A stick.

Sticks. These are the days of this the cement's wet. And on a neshamah level, even though this would be really kefirah'dik to say, the most opportune time to to write is davka Shabbos Shuvah. Imagine Raziel is going to clip that right now, and that's going to be the beginning of the downfall of everything, right? Metaphorically speaking.

Listen, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak miBerditchev had a great vort. He says, why is it so gevald when Yom Kippur comes out on Shabbos? Now we'll say like, you know, when Yom Kippur does come out on Shabbos, he had a great vort. He says, what's so gevald? He said, we know that you can only write something down on שבת if it's פיקוח נפש. Right? So that means that the only inscribing can only be for life emergencies, b'diyuk.

You can say that about also Rosh Hashanah. The first day this year it was din. So the next day that he could write, it was rachamim, so it was like, we're clean. Yeah, mamash.

Mamash. Anyway, chevra, it should be You know what's a good idea this Shabbos? Wrap yourself around like one paragraph of Rav Kook. Take Rav Weinberger's peirush, and like if you don't have it, the shul has it. I can lend it to you.

Just take one paragraph of Rav Kook and sit with it. And if you want, anyone b'emet, if you want to if it's just a world that's foreign to you, for whatever reason, or because the Hebrew really truthfully is so intimidating, even for Israelis, text me today, and I'll send you a certain paragraph I think could be shayach. Just to wrap yourselves around one of those perakim, one of those paragraphs, not a perek, a paragraph of pure light. 'Cause Rav Kook, when you learn him, he's saying to you, I'm going to make you see in you what I see in you, and all I see in you is what the Sfas Emes was talking about.

That that's a tzadik. That's a tzadik. We should be gebentched with b'ezras Hashem gmar chatimah tovah, but first, שיהיה שבת שלום ומבורך to everyone, b'ezras Hashem.
