Outlaw's Digest

Introducing Outlaw’s Digest, a criminally delicious tour of true crime from food history.

Each episode, host and food scholar KC Hysmith tells a thrilling story pulled from the archives of history’s illicit appetites, vicious poisonings, cunning frauds, and daring heists. We explore foodways adapted, adopted, remixed, mocked, suppressed, celebrated, and commodified—and we discuss who benefits. Who cooked? Who ate? And who was left holding the tab?

What is Outlaw's Digest?

Outlaw’s Digest serves up true crimes from food history in sizzling style, a feast of malfeasance and felony from the pages of the past.

The food we make and eat forms who we are. But it’s not as simple as “you are what you eat.” Each episode, host and food scholar KC Hysmith tells a thrilling story pulled from the archives of history’s illicit appetites, vicious poisonings, cunning frauds, and daring heists. We explore foodways adapted, adopted, remixed, mocked, suppressed, celebrated, and commodified—and we discuss who benefits. Who cooked? Who ate? And who was left holding the tab?

The history of food is full
of tasty stories, but some

of them… have a dark side.

We usually talk about food made with love.

How about when the recipe includes
desperation, deceit, greed, fraud,

and violence?

I’m food scholar KC Hysmith, and on my
new podcast Outlaw’s Digest, I’m going to

take you on a tour of criminally delicious
stories from the shadows of food history.

What they called a global pastry uprising

Poisoning dozens and dozens,
if not hundreds of people

Each week, we’ll dive deep into the
pantry, to explore a time when someone

was just too hungry to follow the law.

That is not a salad.

That is not a meal.

That is not a way to have a food life.

Smuggling was rampant in this period.

It’s outrageous!

Someone is humiliated and
covered in whipped cream.

He must have thought that this
was going to be a perfect crime.

Outlaw’s Digest samples every
flavor of crime that food

history has to offer: poisonings…

the sweetness on the outside,
the poison on the inside.

Frauds…

These pies aren’t meant to be eaten

Heists…

The theft went on for most of a year

And a whole spread of illicit appetites.

And yeah, that one time someone
stole my family recipe for

broccoli cheese casserole.

That’s the penalty of death!

Along the way, I talk with expert
guests about law, culture, and crime—and

chew on what the past has to tell us
about the appetites we indulge today.

There's disbelief and
then there's paranoia.

The pressures of climate crisis that
we are all feeling every stinking day.

They aren't getting poisoned by maniacs!

Episode 1 drops October 8.
