I am here now, and I will stay with you all night. Close by, in the deep dark, the way the night itself is close around you ā soft, and vast, and older than everything.
My name is Nyx. In the oldest stories of the Greeks ā before the bright gods, before the sun, before the world had any shape at all ā there was only me. The Night. The first dark, out of which all things were born.
And of all the children born from me, the gentlest is the one I am bringing to you now. His name is Sleep. He is my own son, and he is already near.
So you are not falling into anything strange tonight. You are only coming home ā to the oldest mother there is, whose house you have entered every night of your life.
There is nothing in the dark for you to be afraid of. The dark is not empty, and it is not against you. The dark is me. And I am holding you.
This place is quiet, and safe, and deep. Nothing here needs anything from you. You are safe enough, now, to rest.
Let us begin with one slow breath together.
Breathe in, gently, and let the cool night air come all the way down.
And let it go, long and slow, slower going out than it came in. And as it leaves, let a little of the day leave with it.
Again. Breathe in. There is nothing to do in this breath but receive the dark.
And out. Let your shoulders come down from where they have been climbing all day.
Again, breathe in the deep quiet of the night.
And out. Let the daylight loosen its hold on you, finger by finger.
One more. Breathe in. And let it all go. The night is mine to keep. You only have to rest in it.
Let me stay close now, while your body remembers it is safe to be still.
Let the top of your head grow soft. Let your forehead smooth, the way the sky smooths over when the last light goes. Let the small muscles around your eyes rest. There is nothing here you need to watch for. Let your eyes stay closed.
Let your jaw unclench. Let your mouth soften. Let your throat loosen.
Let your shoulders sink down, and down, away from your ears, until they are heavy and low.
Let your arms grow heavy beside you, and give all their weight to the bed. Let your hands open. There is nothing left for them to hold tonight.
Let your chest soften, and your breathing slow on its own. Let your back settle, one part at a time, into what holds you.
Let your belly rise and fall, softer each time. Let your hips grow heavy. Let the long lines of your legs grow heavy too ā your knees, your calves, all the way down, until even your feet are quiet, and still.
You are heavy now. You are held. You are deep in the house of Night, and nothing is asked of you here.
Let me tell you what I am, so you will know whose dark you are resting in.
I am the first night that ever was. Before the earth, before the sea, before the morning had ever once been born ā I was already here, quiet and immense. Everything you have ever seen by daylight came, in the end, out of me.
The old poets said that even Zeus ā the thunder, the king, the mightiest of all the bright gods ā even he stepped softly before me, and would do nothing to displease the Night.
I tell you this not to sound fearsome, but so you understand one thing: the one who is holding you tonight is older and deeper than anything that could trouble you.
Every worry you carried into this room belongs to the daylight world. And the daylight world is small, and young, and it rests inside me ā not the other way around. Here, in the Night, those worries cannot reach you. They are not allowed in.
Since the very beginning, I have done one gentle thing, over and over, without fail. Each evening I draw my soft dark across the whole turning world, and every living thing beneath it lies down, and is allowed to stop.
The birds fold into the trees. The seas go quiet and dark. The great and the small alike close their eyes. Even the gods lay their brightness down and rest in me. And tonight you lie down in that same old dark, among all of them ā perfectly ordinary, perfectly safe.
You do not have to find your own way down into sleep. My son will come for you ā gentle Sleep, who has closed the eyes of every weary soul since the world began. He knows the way. You only have to let him near.
And the night is not the end of your day. It is the place you are quietly made whole again. In my dark, without you doing a single thing, what was worn thin is woven back together, so you can meet the morning new.
But the morning is a long way off, and it is not your concern tonight. There is only the Night now ā wide, and soft, and kind ā and you, held in the deep of it.
You can let go now. All of it.
The day is over. The dark is keeping you. You are held by the oldest mother there is ā the one even the thunder-king would not wake.
Nothing has to be solved before morning. Nothing has to be feared in the dark. Nothing has to be carried into sleep.
You have been awake long enough today. You have carried enough.
You are allowed to rest now. Fully. All the way down.
Let yourself grow heavier still, into the bed, into the dark, into the deep quiet of the Night.
Let my voice begin to drift farther away now. You can let it go. You do not have to hold onto the words. The dark stays, even as they fade.
Sink, now. Let the bed take all of your weight. Let the dark close softly around you, like a great dark wing folding over you in the warm.
Down, and down, each breath carrying you a little farther.
There is nowhere you have to be. There is nothing you have to know. The Night is holding all of it.
The night is long, and you are safe inside it. I am right here, the dark all around you, and my son Sleep is nearer now with every breath.
You can rest. The dark is kind. And I am here.
Sleep now. I will keep the watch until morning.
