INTRO GOOD (DAY) EVENING MADISON! YOU’RE LISTENING TO THE 5/6 O’CLOCK NEWS UPDATE ON WSUM 91.7 FM MADISON STUDENT RADIO. I’M TALULA HAYES.
IN THE NEWS TODAY,
IN CAMPUS NEWS,
Madison police arrested two people after a hazing investigation at an unsanctioned fraternity on Wednesday night. Officers received an anonymous tip for the frat event held at Alpha Epsilon Pi. Inside the basement, police found around 30 partially clothed males covered in food, condiments and other liquids. The majority of the men were under 18 years old. Several of the men had visible injuries consistent with physical assault. The temperature was set to 81 degrees. Officers declared the event unlawful and escorted them outside, where all pledges were checked by officers for injury. The fraternity was terminated from UW-Madison over a decade ago and remains unrecognized by the university. The president and vice president spoke to responding officers, with both 20-year-old men being arrested for hazing and disorderly conduct. They were taken to Dane County jail and the investigation is ongoing. Because it is recognized as a national organization, it is legally allowed to operate. The chapter said there is no place for hazing in AEPi.
IN NATIONAL NEWS,
A judge temporarily overturned Trump’s White House media ban on Wednesday. The federal judge ordered Trump’s administration to immediately reinstate access to the White house for the affected news organizations. The judge ruled that the ban quote “likely violated their constitutional due process rights” end quote. CNN, MS NOW and Politico were all barred from the White House due to Trump’s claim of their quote “fake news” coverage end quote. Trump’s administration defended the ban by claiming that the organizations had published false information and threatened national security. It is unclear whether all three reporters from the outlets would be readmitted to the White House on Thursday.
IN ECONOMIC NEWS,
Mortgage rates climb to over 7% for the first time since January 2025. This is the highest rate during either of President Trump’s two terms. The 7.03% rate is an average of 30 year fixed rate mortgages according to data released every week. The rate has increased every week for the last 5, putting more and more pressure on the housing market. In February, rates dipped below 6% for the first time in years which was a possible positive sign that the markets could return to normalcy. Today, in the midst of the Iran war pushing oil prices, and therefore inflation rates up, the hope for the market is low. Bright MLS chief economist Lisa Sturtevant said, “Crossing this mark could create a chilling effect on the market, leading to home sales transactions to slow considerably this fall.”
