Alright, let's start with the big money story of the week. Google has announced plans to invest up to forty billion dollars in Anthropic, combining cash and compute resources. This is a staggering commitment, and it comes alongside the limited release of Anthropic's powerful new model called Claude Mythos, a cybersecurity-focused AI that the company says is capable of finding previously unknown software vulnerabilities and exploiting them autonomously. Now, while Anthropic is dealing with a security headache, Google DeepMind has been quietly making waves on the research side. They introduced a model called Vision Banana, an instruction-tuned image generator that's being compared to what GPT-style pretraining did for language models. The argument is compelling: just as training large language models on massive text corpora unlocked powerful reasoning and generation abilities, training on image generation tasks can supercharge computer vision. And the benchmark results back this up. Vision Banana reportedly outperforms SAM 3 on image segmentation and beats Depth Anything V3 on metric depth estimation. In plain English, it's getting better at understanding what's in an image and how far away things are, which are foundational skills for everything from self-driving cars to medical imaging.
Speaking of China, DeepSeek dropped a major preview this week of their V4 model series, and it's generating serious buzz. MIT Technology Review called out three key reasons it matters. The V4 series comes in two flavors: DeepSeek V4 Pro, with a massive 1.6 trillion total parameters, and V4 Flash, a leaner version. Both use a new attention architecture that makes handling one million token context windows actually practical and affordable at inference time. That's a technical way of saying the model can read and reason over an enormous amount of text in one go, roughly the equivalent of several long novels. It's also open source, which means researchers and developers worldwide can build on top of it. And notably, DeepSeek highlighted compatibility with domestic Huawei chips, a milestone for China's homegrown semiconductor industry given US export restrictions. The company claims V4 has nearly closed the gap with the leading closed-source models from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, particularly in coding tasks.
Which brings us to OpenAI, who also released a significant new model this week: GPT-5.5. This is a fully retrained agentic model, meaning it's designed not just to answer questions but to autonomously carry out complex, multi-step tasks like writing and debugging code, doing online research, building spreadsheets, and working across different software tools without needing someone to supervise every single step. OpenAI describes it as the next step toward a new way of getting work done on a computer. The model reportedly scores 82.7 percent on Terminal-Bench 2.0 and 84.9 percent on GDPval, benchmarks that measure how well AI can handle real computer-based tasks end to end. It's a clear signal that the race to build AI that can genuinely replace large chunks of knowledge work is accelerating fast.
Now, all of this AI progress requires enormous amounts of computing power, and that's creating some real-world headaches. The UK government this week quietly revised its estimate of the carbon footprint from AI data centers upward by a factor of more than a hundred. Over the next decade, AI data centers in the UK could emit up to 123 million tonnes of CO2. That's equivalent to the annual emissions of about 2.7 million people. Meanwhile in the US, Maine's Democratic governor Janet Mills vetoed a bill that would have made Maine the first state to freeze new large data center construction. She called the moratorium appropriate in principle, but said it conflicted with an ongoing data center project already underway in the state. The tension here is real: data centers bring investment and tax revenue, but they also strain power grids and drive up energy bills for regular residents.
On the regulatory front, the US Justice Department stepped in to back Elon Musk's xAI in a lawsuit challenging a Colorado AI regulation law. The DOJ argued the Colorado law violated the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause. This signals the Trump administration's preference for a federal framework over a patchwork of state-level AI rules, setting up a significant conflict between Washington and individual states trying to set their own guardrails.
And let's close on a story that captures where we are in this moment beautifully. Isomorphic Labs, a spinoff from Google DeepMind, announced that AI-designed drug candidates are heading into human clinical trials. Their president Max Jaderberg described what he called a broad and exciting pipeline of new medicines developed with the help of AI. This is the technology that designed drugs from scratch using the same protein-folding insights that won a Nobel Prize.
