Good morning and

welcome to Morning Cereal.

Okay good morning and

welcome to Thursday.

Today is a day that says it's okay to

change your mind and your

tattoos because it's National

Tattoo Removal Day, which it's funny

because this is observed

exactly 30 days after National

Tattoo Day because apparently your bold

millennial ink it deserves

a 30-day cool down period

before you can undo it.

I mean hey if it's okay for Pete Davidson

to have some regrets

well we'll go ahead and

let you have a pass too.

No regrets.

And now for our quote today someone with

some laser focus wit Steve

Martin said quote, "Thankfully

persistence is a great

substitute for talent."

Let that settle into your noodle right?

You don't need to be

predigiously talented.

Sticktootiveness can

still get you remarkably far.

Alright today's news facts and birthdays

are for August 14th.

We're going to start back in 1945.

That is when VJ Day.

This was the day that the Empire of Japan

surrendered unconditionally to the Allies

ending World War II.

Then moving up to 1987 rookie Mark

Maguire, gosh that seems

not that long ago, well he

smashed his 49th home run of the season

setting a then rookie record.

Then finally in 1995, Battle of the Brit

Pop, rival bands Oasis,

Roll With It and Blur Country

House they both released

singles on the same day.

Those crazy, crazy Brits.

Well happy birthday to you

if today is your birthday.

You share a birthday with actress Mila

Kunis she's 42 today,

actress Halle Berry she's

59 today.

All the famed basketball player Magic

Johnson 66 today and

comedian, actor and someone I

do wish I was friends with

Steve Martin he's 80 today.

Now the number one song on this date in

1988 was Roll With It by Steve Winwood.

Now this head bop and groove it rode the

charts with smooth

keyboard riffs and irresistible

rhythm.

It became an 80s radio mainstay and it's

still a nostalgic

touchdown dance for our generation.

And just like that we're going to go

ahead and roll from

rhythm into resilience right

because it's time to dig into habit five

officially in habit five now

character and communication.

Okay, habit five centers on the idea that

trust isn't built by

just what you say, but

how you say it and who

you are when you say it.

Kobi reminds us saying quote trust is

created by two dimensions of

communication, character

and competence end quote and that means

being both skillful and grounded.

Kobi emphasizes the cornerstone of

communication saying again

quote seek first to understand

then to be understood end quote.

It's empathy, it's not

ego that opens doors.

Remember early workplace water cooler

moments or awkward family dinners.

I mean how much smoother could things

have gone if someone just

pause for a minute, they

listen and heard the other person before

launching into their defense.

Next Kobi dives into integrity again

here, living your

values and letting that shine

through in conversation.

Kobi writes that effective communicators

quote don't make their

actions conflict with abstract

principles end quote.

In other words, if you

promise I'll be there, be there.

Our generation knows all about saying I'm

on my way when we

weren't on our ways, sometimes

even to ourselves right.

So align your words with your walk

credibility grows when they match.

Kobi also clarifies competence, knowing

your stuff matters but

without character competence

can slide into arrogance right and

conversely character without

competence might come across

as empty virtue.

The magic lies in the balance of those.

Okay putting this into practice, start

small in work calls,

start with a check in.

How was your day?

I want to understand your workload or in

family chats actually listen

to the team before offering

advice.

Even if they're

rolling their eyes at you.

Now over time this rewiring grows trust

and trust is the superglue

of all these relationships.

All right here's your takeaway.

Habit five teaches us that communication

isn't just about being

heard, it's about being trusted.

Combine character with competence, listen

first and watch how your

connections look deeper.

Whether that's with your kid, with your

partner or even with

your stubborn inner voice.

All right well whether you're actually or

metaphorically removing old regrets like

beta tattoos or just rolling with

whatever life throws at

you today, do it with grit,

do it with grace and maybe

a little Steve Martin win.
