We begin in the Middle East where a devastating conflict has now stretched into its second week. The United States and Israel are conducting large-scale bombing campaigns across Iran, with officials reporting nearly 1,350 civilian deaths in just 12 days of attacks. A Pentagon assessment has determined the U.S. was responsible for a devastating strike on an Iranian girls school on February 28th that killed 168 children and 14 teachers. President Trump has denied responsibility, but 46 Democratic and independent senators are demanding answers from the Defense Secretary. The cost of the first six days alone has exceeded 11.3 billion dollars. And now Iran has named a new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who is vowing to continue punishing strikes and keep the Strait of Hormuz closed, threatening even more regional attacks.

In Lebanon, Israeli bombardment continues relentlessly. More than 630 people, including at least 91 children, have been killed over the past week. Strikes have come without warning, sometimes in the early morning hours, killing rescue workers and civilians alike.

The impact is rippling across the entire Gulf region. Iranian drones and missiles have struck air bases and critical infrastructure in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. Oil tankers have caught fire off the coasts of Oman and the UAE, and desalination plants in Iran and Bahrain have been targeted, threatening the water supply for millions. Oil prices are surging as the International Energy Agency warns this conflict could cause the largest supply disruption in history.

Meanwhile in Sudan, a drone strike in the village of Shukeri has killed 17 people, most of them girls. The Sudan doctors network says the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces are responsible for the attack.

And back to the broader global picture. Canadians are evacuating from both Iran and Israel as the conflict expands. An explosion at the U.S. embassy in Oslo is being investigated as a possible act of terrorism.
