Punchy, actionable insights and tips to make the life of the team leader a breeze.
[00:00:00] Pia: What difference would it make to your leadership if you knew that there were just three conditions that you need to focus on and could make your team incredibly successful? Well, you are in luck. I'm Pierre.
[00:00:12] Dan: And I'm Dan, and this is Squadify Connects.
[00:00:15] When we look across our global Squadify results from thousands of teams, there's a familiar pattern emerging. Teams are really focused on delivering the ever increasing number of tasks, often as individuals in a group and not leveraging the dynamics and diversity in the team, or finding time to look up and out to improve their thinking.
[00:00:37] Pia: And to be honest, this is only natural given the challenges that teams are facing and the changes to our working practices. But how do you actually bring a team together and how do you sustain success?
[00:00:50] Dan: Yeah, well, there's a model for team success that's been in use for nearly three decades, and it breaks team conditions into three parts. Clarity, climate and competence. Very simple, three Cs. This approach has been validated not just by decades of practice, by hundreds of consultants and practitioners and coaches, but by the London School of Economics and the University of Sydney. So let's take a look at those three conditions. Pierre, talk us through it.
[00:01:15] Pia: So clarity. Well, this is, this looks at all the things that we need to be clear about. That's the really simple way. So why the team is together, what it's trying to achieve together, how it will get there, and what the roles are. Climate is a system, process and resources, but also things like culture, communication, psychological safety. And competence. Looks at skills and knowledge as well as behaviors and attitude that are needed by the team.
[00:01:48] Dan: So in a way, clarity is all about direction. Climate is what it feels like to be in the team, what it's like. And competence is all about the capabilities of the individuals in that team. Everything falls into those categories. You will find a guide to the conditions for team success in the show notes on the page where you are listening to this episode.
[00:02:08] Pia: So to get a little bit more familiar with the three Cs so it just doesn't sound like a bunch of terms, dive in and do a bit of a diagnostic on your own team. When you look at it, which elements do you think are going well and which elements are not going so well? This could be a massive leap in your team leadership. So give yourself a few minutes to really understand it, and then also take a look at the video that we've put into the show notes. Take a different view from your team, one that you're generally looking over your team rather than being in it or feeling like you've got to be in front of it. See you next week.
