Welcome everybody to the Make Your Passion Pay podcast. We talk about the six C's to make your passion pay. That's clarity, connection, community, collaboration, creativity, and commitment, and we keep coming up with more C's. Now that we've focused on C's, they're all over the place, it's so interesting. So I'm super excited to have with me today my friend Michelle Hoff. Michelle is a certified life coach who helps women in midlife get clear and declutter so they can reclaim their homes, their minds, and their habits. As a heart-centered transformational coach, she guides clients in releasing guilt around stuff and what truly supports their lives today. She's an Amazon best-selling author of, yes, it's another C word, Compassionate Decluttering: How to Soulfully Surrender Your Stuff. I love that subtitle, How to Soulfully Surrender Your Stuff, and the creator of the Align Method, which she will share with us today. A powerful approach that blends emotional coaching with professional organizing support—a unique combination for sure. Through her unique team-based model, Michelle helps clients create lasting change and live fuller lives with less clutter and less stuff.
(00:04:44.480) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: So, soulfully surrender your stuff.
(00:04:46.380) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: I love that. I don't think I've heard that subtitle before.
(00:04:50.780) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Oh,
(00:04:51.480) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: That's possible.
(00:04:54.280) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: You know, passionate decluttering takes up a lot of space, so it's all good.
(00:05:00.680) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Well, right, and that's what we're trying to get is open up space for good things to come, right? So we have a saying in the passion test: get rid of the old to make room for the new.
(00:05:12.780) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Amen. Let's go good.
(00:05:14.680) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: And that is a mindset, right? It's a true energetic opening in the world. When you declutter what's around you, you make room for more good things to come in.
(00:05:26.380) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Yes, it's so enlightening. It's so enlightening. There's so much more offered to us, isn't there, when we let go of this.
(00:05:36.280) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Yeah. Yeah. You're gonna have to work with me on that. You know that we've talked about this as not only my whole house, but those of family members that have passed before me, that I just can't seem to let go of. So, tell us a little bit about the Align method and how that helps to shift our mindset around letting go of stuff.
(00:06:04.580) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Yes. Well, the Align method, it's an acronym obviously and words are acknowledge first and foremost. Acknowledge what is in the way. It's about coming to a place in your life where you ignored whatever stuff you have, and the weight that it may have in your soul, in your space, and you've finally read enough of the decluttering books that haven't worked and stopped. You talk to other organizers and maybe had them in your house and you've been talking about it enough and you realize, you know what, I need some different help and I want to get this stuff out of my way, out of the emotional way and out of my way physically, and you start there. And if you're ready for that at the start, you are off to the races because it's usually being stuck in not admitting that there's an issue. We're not going to be talking, right?
(00:07:26.380) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: So just like every other addiction, if you will, the first step is acknowledging that you need to get rid of stuff and you say acknowledge the stories without self-judgment, right? So no judgment on this, it's just the truth. This is where I find myself, acknowledge it and then start to shift the mindset. I think letting go for me is a big one, which is the L, right?
(00:07:59.080) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Which is in the L is actually, yes, letting go with love. I mean, it's about leading with love, focusing on what you actually love in your space. Maybe not the obligations or the heirlooms that are someone else's history, but the things that are the things you actually love that you have. When you can start discerning those loved items from the obligations and the habits and the patterns and the old family rules, you have an opportunity to make distinctions that help you make decisions. So that's a really beautiful part of the process, looking at your life always with the next acronym, which is I, imagine. When you can imagine your life beyond the stuff and how you're going to move about in your home, how you are going to feel with that heavy energy and weight from the obligations, you can create a vision of your life without this stuff. It's just magical. Stuff starts to happen, this whole ease, this family and friends, and people coming over and all that good stuff that you want to do but haven't been able to do.
(00:09:46.680) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: And we know the power of imagination, right? The universe doesn't know the difference between reality and imagination. So when you can put your imagination to work, you can create the spaces that you want, right? And Michelle, you've been through my work and doing your vision. Yeah, absolutely. So you know the power of casting that vision and I'm sure you share that enthusiasm with your clients about getting them to really create that vision of what they would like their home to feel like and look like.
(00:10:20.680) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Absolutely, and something actually activates within a client, you know, and it motivates them and they are so excited to get on the horse with the organizer. Together, those two then work hand in hand, one-on-one in the home, really with the client, like partnering—not being dragged through the process by the organizer, but really partnering with that organizer. I'm excited to uncover, you know, unearth the home that they've dreamed of, and it's really cool.
(00:11:06.680) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: You know, it's really interesting that as long as we've known each other, which isn't really all that long, but we became instant friends, so it feels like forever.
(00:11:15.680) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Right.
(00:11:16.280) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: But I never put those two pieces together—the visioning of the space that you want to have—in the same way that my clients vision their business or their life. It's hitting me in a new way today. That's super exciting because now I'm going to go write that vision for my home in the way that I would teach a client to write it for their business.
(00:11:43.080) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Oh, that's exciting, LuAnn.
(00:11:45.480) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Really super cool. We should do a retreat together and invite all these people who are listening to us because we should do some amazing work in letting go of the old to make room for the new, and not only revamping your home space but perhaps your business space, because where we spend most of our time is in your business. And now plenty of us do that at home today, right? I work from my home office and home studio, if you will. And so, it is so important for that to be in the right energetic vibration.
(00:12:21.580) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: It's exactly that. Exactly that. And not only is it really a vibration element, there's a part of your brain called the reticular activating system. You've heard about it. I'm
(00:12:34.380) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: sure
(00:12:34.580) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Isn't it? It's really magnificent in that the mind has thousands of pieces of information coming at it.
(00:12:45.980) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: 400 billion bits per second.
(00:12:48.980) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: And it's gotten exponentially higher in the last, you know, decades. So we have a very hard time. So there's a part of our brain that helps us manage what we actually take in. And when you have a vision in your brain about your business, your personal life, your home, whatever it may be, it helps you narrow down what you actually pay attention to. When you have clear vision, and if you're looking, for example, even if you're looking for that red, you know, sports car or whatever, you begin to see red sports cars all over the place with this amazing reticular activating system. And so if you have a vision for both home, business, or personal passions like
(00:13:40.380) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Yeah, we say when you are clear what you want will show up in your life, and only to the extent that you're clear about what that is. And it's not that those things start to magically appear, it's that I've programmed my brain to look for them now, and so it sees them. I have that exact story. It was the opposite, though. I was shopping for a car. I hate shopping for cars, so I sent my little brother out to find me a car. He calls me up, he goes, I found this cute little red number, you're gonna look great in it, you got to come test drive it. And I'm like, oh, like test driving, the whole process just annoys me. And so I go, really, like, what is it? And he goes, it's a Toyota Matrix. I'm like, I've never heard of a Toyota Matrix, and he's like, well, I don't care, get down here, you gotta test. And so sure enough, I go down, test drive it, I buy it, you know, lease it off a lot, whatever. And then the very day that I drive it off the lot, Matrixes are everywhere. My neighbor had a blue one in the driveway, and before that, I had never seen a Matrix.
(00:14:50.780) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: but
(00:14:51.380) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Now that I knew it existed and what it looked like, boom, they're popping up. It's kind of like the C words. When I started focusing on them, I see them everywhere. Oh, fun. Interesting to see that reticular system work.
(00:15:08.580) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: So
(00:15:08.780) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Yeah, I loved one is ground yourself in sport, and
(00:15:15.480) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Yes. I mean, one thing that I just want to elaborate with people is that decluttering is the most complicated project you will ever do. It's really very dimensional: it's emotional, it's social, it's physical, it's logistical, it's generational. I mean, there's just so much involved in decluttering, and it's transformational indeed. But if you were in a business and you were going to transform your business into something different, you know, you need a marketer, you need a tech person, you need an HR person, you need all
(00:15:57.280) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: these, you know,
(00:15:57.980) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: and you need all of these different
(00:16:00.380) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: and a business coach.
(00:16:02.980) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: And a business coach, absolutely. Yes, I mean you need all of these people to help you.
(00:16:09.880) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: So that's why you coach people on decluttering.
(00:16:15.380) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: I do, and that is why I'm also saying you can't do it alone, and you at least need a mindset coach because I think your mind is so powerful. You can change your mind, you can really start to change your life in your home and your business, whatever. And it's also that I incorporate professional organizers from all around the country because I'm a virtual coach. So I meet up with the professional organizers all over the country, creating relationships with those organizers. I have a pilot program here in Minneapolis with local organizers, and over the last year I've established a really great test team decluttering, and that is what the G is all about: allowing yourself to get some additional support.
(00:17:10.480) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: In the hearing process because it is absolutely daunting to do it alone.
(00:17:11.080) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: And, you know, the systems involved in making your kitchen work and putting your pantry together or even your closet together or your laundry room together. There's a lot of ways that can be done more efficiently that work for the client and the client's mind and the way they think, and that's what professional organizers are phenomenal at doing.
(00:17:42.680) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Ever work with people that are transitioning from one home to another? Like I always say, this will never get cleaned up the way it should until I have to move out. Therefore, it's becoming more real, but that's another reason why I should create that vision of what I want my home to look like, right, and invite that home into my life.
(00:18:11.080) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: And even, yeah, even that sounds like maybe a blank slate—what's to come. It's not even—it's even bigger than the space you're in, allowing yourself to have it be the biggest, most ideal environment that you want, and see what shows up and have some fun with that.
(00:18:32.480) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: It's, yeah,
(00:18:33.380) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Amazing where the brain and the
(00:18:34.680) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: heart.
(00:18:34.980) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: can go.
(00:18:35.680) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: I really, I'm really having a full moment of just how powerful that can be because I know how powerful the vision stories we write in the Passion Test are for people. They attract that right in, it makes it happen, they're achieving their goals in half the time they ever imagined that they could, and therefore, I can apply that same rule to reimagining my house. I love that so much, super excited. So, nurture repeatable practices to sustain a clutter-free lifestyle is the end, and I want to ask you about a practice that I've heard about but have yet to be able to fully implement into my life, but you're gonna help me. It's called 27/9.
(00:19:24.180) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Tell me more, I have not heard.
(00:19:25.680) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: He released 27 things every day for nine days in a row.
(00:19:30.880) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: 27 nine. Okay,
(00:19:32.880) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: 27 things for nine days in a row. I learned this from my friends in a program I'm a part of called the Year of Miracles, and their month is 'I'm Letting Go.' They do some of this decluttering stuff, and so we're in the month of letting go right now, and I'm supposed to be doing that. I did one day really well, and here are the rules. The other rule is if you miss a day, you have to start over.
(00:20:00.680) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Oh really.
(00:20:02.680) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Oh, you don't make it nine days in a row, you have to start over. So I have to start over, but I'm inspired to do so by our conversation and super excited about it for our audience. I want you to know that when we talk about releasing 27 things for nine days in a row, that could be 27 socks out of your sock drawer.
(00:20:23.980) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Yeah,
(00:20:24.780) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: That could be 27 pieces of paper off your desk.
(00:20:27.680) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Yeah,
(00:20:28.380) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: That could be 27 emails, right? It could be that simple. My friend who is a professional organizer, she said, oh, look in your freezer, it's a good place. Get rid of things.
(00:20:41.880) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: I don't think a really great point. Oh my god, you
(00:20:46.180) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: You know, and I think of my bathroom cabinets. I go, oh, yeah, that's probably a pretty easy one too. And so really, it shouldn't be that difficult. So I'm committing, I'm declaring to the group that I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna start tonight. I'm going to do my 279, and then if I fail, I'll check in with Michelle and get some more coaching.
(00:21:06.880) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Please, if you're up for it, text me every day. This number,
(00:21:13.580) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Just a number or which items went.
(00:21:17.980) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: I have no judgment, and that's the part of the work that I love the most. Well, the case. So the nourishing piece, because it is about nourishing your soul in the process, because this is a shame-free zone that I create. There is no judgment about how many pieces you have on your mantle. You know, real estate, they say you need three. That doesn't work for me. I don't care if you have 30, it doesn't matter to me what your home looks like. To me, I am not going to live there, you are going to live there, right? And so, the point of nourishing yourself through the process is that this is ongoing, right? This is a lifestyle and a life that you're creating for yourself within this space and it has to nourish you. In the process, you walk into the door and the place you walk into should feel like it loves you back. It expresses who you are. It really holds your full self there and that's what the home should do. How do you do that? Do you get somebody to help you clean it on occasion? Do you have a check-in with yourself when you know it's kind of going off the rails again and you say, well, when I feel that it's going off the rails or I can see it, this is what I do to bring myself back to my vision, to the place, or create a new vision for how, you know, that vision changes over time, right? You know that we're not the same person we were last year and
(00:23:03.880) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Right? We evolve, we grow. Yeah, absolutely. So I was just thinking, I think when my mindset shifted away from a perfectly organized house was when my kids were little and I was getting my master's degree and I'm like, something's gotta give. I was working full-time. Something's gotta give and I decided it was the house. I'm just not gonna worry about it. I don't have people over here all the time, right? Because I'm just a mom taking care of her kids. I was a single mom at the time besides, so I just sort of said intentionally that I'm just gonna let that calm, not gonna worry myself about that or judge myself about the way my household looks, you know. But now I'm 64 and I have grandchildren. It's time to get a handle on this. And because I also don't want anybody else to have to deal with it. I've been there with several family members where you're left to deal with the cast after the fact. God loved them and I still miss them. But yeah, and I really don't want my children to have to do that. And so that's part of my inspiration right now is to do that. And again, I really do. I'm gonna declare that as well. I got to declare it at the women's luncheon this week. You were missing, but we declared some things for our future and I declared that I will own a retreat center in northern Minnesota. I actually met with a realtor today. And so, right, there's that vision of what I really want it to look like and what would never come with me from this current home to the next one should go.
(00:24:52.580) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Right.
(00:24:54.680) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: I mean, that's a matter-of-fact statement that I hope I can stand behind, but I like declaring it to the world, I guess. Because there's power in that, there's power in that, right?
(00:25:04.580) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: there is and there's somebody else looking for what you want to let go of. So it's, it's gonna be loved.
(00:25:11.280) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Oh gosh, that's a beautiful one too, right. One man's trash is another man's treasure.
(00:25:18.680) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Yeah, I mean
(00:25:19.280) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Here's another question, though. Of a spouse.
(00:25:23.080) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Yeah,
(00:25:23.380) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Who may not have the same values as I do around decluttering. And recently, I've talked on the podcast about learning about now. I always talk about core values in your business, right? And I was at an event where it was a relationship therapist that was doing the presentation, and she brought every argument back to core values. If you and your partner are arguing, it means your core values are out of alignment. Now, it's not to say we give up the relationship. It's to say we understand.
(00:26:00.580) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Yeah,
(00:26:01.780) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Give you one. My core value for my vehicle is there are no muddy dogs running loose in my car. That is not the same core value my husband has for his car. It's like, okay, you can keep the dog in your car, but don't you put the dog in my car unless it's in a kennel, right? So we've got to get clear on what those are for us, and he had been forced into retirement. So I've got all of his accumulation from his profession, which as a golf pro, there's lots of golf clubs around that are in my house as well, you know? So, any advice to someone who lives with someone else whose core value around decluttering is not the same.
(00:26:50.480) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Well, you are not alone. You are not alone in everything you have spoken about today, honestly, as well. Here's so the only thing that I can do as a coach is tell my clients they're only able to affect themselves.
(00:27:09.480) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: in the price.
(00:27:11.480) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: And I'll tell you that I've had other clients who've had spouses with differing ways of being in their homes and collecting. And there is a shift that does happen with that other individual when the person that I'm coaching, the client I'm coaching, changes. They're managing their stuff differently, and then the other person sees how their stuff shows up differently and they notice it. They've started. Toothpicks, I understand that defeated in some ways because they're not really making as much progress, but you are making an
(00:28:18.622) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: impact and you are making a difference. Well, and I have experienced that in the business community. I had a superior that would only talk to me when
(00:28:32.922) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: they wanted to tell me
(00:28:34.422) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: something was wrong. Oh, and I'm like, what is this about? Like I won't hear from this person for months and then all of a sudden the world is coming to an end and I'm doing everything
(00:28:44.822) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: wrong
(00:28:45.122) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Which is not true, right? And another mentor said to me, perhaps
(00:28:52.222) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: your boss
(00:28:53.522) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Needs to be needed. Oh, that person more frequently and ask for their advice and check in with them. Share with them what you're doing and I
(00:29:03.422) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: want
(00:29:04.422) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Interesting, I
(00:29:06.322) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: then
(00:29:06.822) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: So I shifted, relationship shifted, and somebody said to me, when, why did you have to be the one to shift? And I said, because I wanted to, because I
(00:29:17.922) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: wanted my life to feel better.
(00:29:22.322) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: And so I chose to do it to make my life feel better, right? But I have seen that in other relationships too. When I started following the Passion Test and other people started following the work I was doing with the Passion Test, then their mannerisms and things would shift around the positivity that we teach in the Passion Test process. So I guess that's right. Just have faith that the person will notice around you and start to come along. Actually, when I think about it, it's a difference of what matters because there's plenty of things
(00:29:59.622) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: he'd like to throw away.
(00:30:00.722) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: That's mine, right? And maybe we need to negotiate that, like going, okay, you tell me what I really should just get rid of. I don't see if I agree with you and if I would feel, you know, like I was losing something joyful in my life or not. That's another one. My organizer friend talks about a lot is, hold it. Does it give you joy? If it doesn't give you joy, then move on. And you should take a picture of it so you can go back and look at it again, but you
(00:30:29.622) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: don't have to have it in your house. Yes, just the image of it makes it
(00:30:34.322) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: feel. It can feel all those feelings, you know, those feelings? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But I'm also now seeing in my mind's eye a new way that some of the things that are my husband's, all his pictures of golf courses, could be used in a retreat center, especially in the north woods, maybe near
(00:30:55.322) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: a golf course.
(00:30:58.522) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: There you go. Love it. You know,
(00:31:04.522) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: you want to live
(00:31:05.722) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Happily ever after, right? It's not all bad. It's not all bad, right? As long as I'm in the Northwoods, so super fantastic. Michelle, you have a workshop but
(00:31:18.222) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Seminar coming up. What do I want to call it? It's a mastermind, just an hour-long mastermind about the Align method and kind of talking about all the acronyms and giving people some ways to think about and process one or two things they want to affect when they get off the call. So that kind of thing really is just an opportunity to
(00:31:48.922) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: Tap into the work that I do.
(00:31:51.022) Michelle "Compassionate Decluttering" Hoff: Yeah, yeah.
(00:31:51.722) LuAnn Buechler, Make Your Passion Pay Podcast: To get a little snippet sampling, a little taste of it, right? Dip your big toe in the water.
